A year ago, I started working out with a personal trainer and the results were obvious. The reflection in the mirror was fit and strong, with a narrow waist. This month I'll be celebrating my 74th birthday, but I feel more like I'm about to turn 40.In fact, I'm in the best shape of my life. And I'm here to tell you that it's never too late to make changes. If I can do it in my early 70s, then you can do it too.

I enrolled in a gym and learned how to use the equipments. Over the next few years, I went to the gym roughly twice a week. Sometimes I didn't want to go-but at the end of every session I always felt better.

I wrote and self-published a book called Journey to Chocolate about my seeking for a more balanced and satisfying life. I started eating "clean" with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding processed food and not drinking alcohol from Monday to Thursday. The changes to my diet made me feel more energetic and alert. I slept better, and managing my weight was much easier.

Harvest Days has returned bigger and better than ever. This family-fun event falls on 7th 8th, October from 10:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. This year's event includes a two-day silent auction (拍卖) , staged in the Firehouse. Bid (投标) on a variety of heritage pieces inspired by objects preserved in the museum's collection. Also, up for bid are a variety of museum passes, experiences, art, wine, beer, and more. All the money will benefit the museum through the work of the Landis Valley Associates.

Tickets will be available at the front gate.

Used to celebrate the harvest of a year's hard work, Harvest Days is Landis Valley's oldest and largest family event. Come for demonstrations, exhibits, live music, and children's activities. Taste varieties of apples and watch them become apple butter and drink. Witness wool go from sheep to clothes. Pick a pumpkin of your very own and then decorate it. All of these and more are packed into two fun-filled days.

This year's event offers food demonstrations, such as apple butter, processing pork, bake oven and heart h cooking; craft demonstrations, such as coopering, blacksmith, leather, brooms, millinery, weaving, woodwork; craft sales, such as jams jellies, potteries, soap, candles.

Food will be available for purchase on site. Free parking.

The next morning, it was snowing heavily. Watching this wonderful sight along with tasting the delicious hot chocolate, we friends were planning to go for an overnight climb to the top of the mountain. We came out of the hotel room and stepped into the deep snow which buried half our legs into the soft snowy ground. The best moment till now was looking up at the grand mountain. Also the view was clear. I was eager to start my climb. We climbed towards the top and all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell from the mountain. Fortunately I did not end up giving up my life but got a severe fracture (骨折) on my leg.

Falling around December 22nd, the winter solstice (冬至) is one of the traditional Chinese festivals also one of the 24 solar terms (节气).

The winter solstice festival originated from the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) and (develop) well in the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279). People in the old times attached great (important) to the festival. In the Han Dynasty, the festival was regarded as the Winter Festival and people had one day off for the holiday. Officials organized the ceremonies (celebrate) the day and people visited each other with delicious food.

Traditions and customs for the day vary different areas of China. In the northern part of China, people usually eat dumplings, and mutton to celebrate the day. In the southern part, tang yuan and noodles are the festival food. The dumpling is the (essence) food for people in northern China. After the winter solstice, it will become colder and colder. By eating dumplings, people think they can avoid (they) ears from being frozen as the dumplings look like people's ear.

Tangyuan, is popular in southern China, is a kind of glutinous rice (糯米) ball with different fillings. It can (boil) or fried. People think after (eat) it, they will age one. People also use it to present to relatives and friends.

Jim Quick grew up on a farm in Orchard Hill, Georgia. There he learned how 1 bees are to the food we eat. When he was 11, his grandfather asked him to start a beehive to keep the 2 growing strong.

Russia is launching a new module (舱) for the International Space Station(ISS), after more than a decade of delays. The Nauka module is set to lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on top of a Proton-M rocket at around 15:00 GMT today, along with a new robotic arm for the station created by the European Space Agency.

The ISS is composed of modules and equipment from different space agencies including Europe, Japan and Canada, but the major part of the station is composed of two main sections, a Russian part and a US part. At 13 meters long and weighing more than 20 tonnes, Nauka, also called the Multipurpose Laboratory Module, will be among the largest in Russia's half.

After launch, Nauka will take eight days to reach the ISS. Once attached, it will act as a new centre for the Russian part of the station. "It's a science laboratory, and it also provides a lot of important service systems," says Anatoly Zak, editor of a website. Planned research includes biological and materials science experiments. "It's a step in making the Russian part more independent (from the US part)." This includes a new toilet inside the module and sleeping rooms for the crew.

The launch of Nauka has been a long time coming, with construction of the module beginning in the 1990s. Technical and supply issues since then, such as the loss of components from Ukraine following the Russian annexation (兼并) of Crimea in 2014, have seen development stumble (蹒跚而行). "It's much more complex than anything the Russian space programme has tried to build in the last few years," says Zak. Russia's last module — Rassvet — was carried to the ISS by a US spacecraft in 2010.

New research shows that the average cost of raising a child to the age of 18 in China in 2021 was 485,000 yuan for a first child,  is far more than  in the United States and Japan. The high cost of child-raising is one more （difficult） Chinese policymakers face while （deal） with rapidly decreasing birth rates. Experts warn China's aging population will put pressure  its health and social security systems. A decrease in workers could also （severe） limit growth for the world's second-largest economy in the coming years.

Elizabeth Blackwell is a British-born woman physician. She was born in 1821 in England. Her father decided to move the family to the United States in 1812 after his factory was destroyed by fire. It is said that she turned to studying medicine after a close friend who was dying said she wouldn't have suffered so much if her physician had been a woman. Elizabeth knew that no woman had ever been permitted to study in a medical school. But she began to think about the idea seriously after the friend who had suggested it died. 

Elizabeth discussed it with her family. Her family supported her. However, all the medical colleges refused her except Geneva Medical College in New. York. When she graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1839, she became the first woman in America to earn the M. D. degree. She was not offered many opportunities as a young female physician, she opened her own office 2 years later. Her younger sister Dr. Emily Blackwell, joined her in 1856. Together with Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, they opened the New York Infirmary （医院） for Women and Children in 1857. After establishing the infirmary. Elizabeth Blackwell went on a year-long lecture tour of Great. Britain. Her lectures and personal example inspired more women to take up mea1cine as a profession. 

When the American Civil War broke out, the Blackwell sisters aided in nursing efforts. After the end of the war, Elizabeth Blackwell carried out a plan that she had developed together, with her friend Florence Nightingale while in England. She opened the Women's Medical College with, her sister. This. college was operated under her sister's management. She moved to England the next year. There, she helped to organize the National Health Society and she founded the London School of Medicine for Women. 

As her health declined, Blackwell gave up the practice of medicine in the late 1870s, though she still campaigned for reform（改革）. May 1910, she died at home in England. 

For most of my adult life, I've felt slightly ashamed —not of something I've done, but of something I haven't. Although I'm an independent person who has been to numerous countries, I've never gone on an overseas holiday alone. I've traveled with my parents, partners, kids and other families. I've travelled with my pet and joined tours where I knew no one but came out with lifelong friends. 

But for a while, my failure to travel alone felt like a mistake. Solo travel is celebrated. I've seen a thousand pieces written by adventurous women who claim to have found themselves by crossing countries alone. Traveling solo makes you capable, they say. It pushes you out of your comfort zone. Every woman should travel alone at, least once in her life!

And yet, I've never had an urge to do it. For one thing, I need a lot of people contact. A single day without meaningful conversation can leave me feeling depressed. Proper, engaging conversation is difficult when traveling alone. Even if you're good at chatting with strangers, it isn't always possible. I don't want to worry about being alone on my travels. I want support and company during my adventures. I used to see this desire to be with others as some sort of flaw, but now I see it as a valid choice. 

Traveling solo builds resilience. But so does life. I am a single parent raising three children while trying to juggle a career. I make endless decisions alone and deal with crises alone. I manage loneliness and fear. I don't need to travel alone to build resilience. I have resilience in spades, I'm sure travelling overseas would push me further out of comfort zone. But you know what else pushed me out of my comfort zone? Being single in a society that values marriage. Earning a living in a difficult industry. Dating men I've met on an app. My life is effortful enough. I don't need my travels to be effortful too. 

Travel is incredibly valuable, no matter what your stage of life. It teaches you how diverse the world is and how to appreciate your culture in relation to another. It stretches your mind and gives you a new viewpoint. 

And you don't need a solo journey to become an independent woman. I assure you that life will get you there in the end. 

Brooke wanted a dollhouse and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn't her mom or babysitter. It was a voice-activated（声控的） home assistant powered by artificial intelligence（AI）. Alexa comes with the Amazon Echo device（回波装置）. And it made Brooke's wishes come true. After being reported on TV, Alexa devices in many listeners' homes woke up and tried to order dollhouses!

Alexa isn't the only AI willing to order up treats for you. Apple Homepod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report from The Information, people don't often do voice shopping. They do it mainly to order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom（繁荣） in voice shopping in the near future. 

Convenience is the main benefit of voice shopping. You can shout out an order as soon as you think of it, even if you're cooking or driving. Besides, people who are unable to use a keyboard or mouse can shop without assistance. 

But voice shopping has its downsides. Unwanted things aren't the biggest problem. It's usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The surprising thing is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen for " Alexa" or " OK Google" or another command. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to learn about people's shopping habits? What if someone hacks（非法侵入）the device? What if someone hacks smart TVs to turn them into spies that listen all the time?

When I was a teenager growing up in Russia. I felt studying very boring. I wanted to leave school and have my own life. There were only two ways for me to do this—working in the toy factory in my town, or getting married. I chose the first one. I was nervous when I told my father that I wanted to leave school. I thought he would say, " No! You are going to college. " Instead, he took me by surprise when he said, " OK. We'll go to the toy factory. " 

Two days later, he took me to the factory. I had a very romantic idea of working in a factory. I had imagined everyone to be friendly working together and having fun. I even imagined there would be music and singing. I guess I had watched too many movies as a teenager. 

When we arrived at the factory gates, my father spoke to the guard and one minute later we went inside. My father said, " Take your time. Look around. " I walked around the factory, looking at the buildings, the workers, and listening to the noise. It was terrible. I ran back to my father and said, " I want to go home. " 

He asked me, " What do you think of the factory?" 

" It's terrible," I replied. 

" And you have another choice, but I think getting married is even worse!" he said. 

I went back to school the next day. From then on, I studied as hard as I could. Finally I got into a good college. I enjoyed studying English so I decided to major in languages at college. Thanks to my father and our trip to the factory, I now work at the United Nations and my father is very proud of me. I married a very good man and my life is much better than it would have been working in the factory!
