It is often said that if we dream in a foreign language, it's a sign that we are making progress in learning that language. But is it true?

Before we can look at multilingual (多语言的)dreams, first we need to look at sleep. The link between sleep and language can be applied to how we learn any language, including our mother tongue. Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their first language, but, if we are going to have a firm grasp of that new word, we need to link it to our existing knowledge. "In order to do that, we need to have some sleep", says Gareth Gaskell, a psychology professor at the University of York.

It's during sleep that the integration of old and new knowledge happens. At night, one part of our brain—the hippocampus-takes whatever new information it got in the day, and passes it on to other parts of the brain to be stored. The role that dreams play in this night-time learning process is still being studied, but it's entirely possible that during multilingual dreams, the brain is trying to connect two languages, according to Marc Zuist, researcher at the University Hospital of Psychiatry in Switzerland.

So having multilingual dreams could mean that our brain is trying to master a new word or phrase, but it could also have an emotional significance. . Danuta Barker, a professor of psycholinguistics(心理语言学)at the University of Silesia in Poland, suggests that multilingual dreams can express fears and desires around learning a foreign language, including the wish to be a native-like speaker or to be accepted within a certain community.

We clearly still have a lot to learn about multilingual dreams, but one thing seems certain: if you're trying to learn a new language, you should definitely sleep on it.

(1)、Which of the following does Gareth agree with?
A、Adults are better at learning. B、We can learn words while sleeping. C、Our existing knowledge is from dreams. D、Multilingual dreams have nothing to do with progress.
(2)、What does the underlined word "integration" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A、Method. B、Form. C、Combination. D、Reflection.
(3)、What is the function of the hippocampus?
A、Studying the role of the dream. B、Analyzing the learning process. C、Developing the new area of the brain. D、Absorbing and delivering information.
    (4)、What does Danuta Barker study?
A、Emotion and dreams. B、Languages and communities. C、Universities and courses. D、Words and expressions.
(5)、What's the main idea of the passage?
A、Why we learn a foreign language in the dream. B、Learning languages is completely from sleeping. C、Sleeping plays an important part in the development of brains. D、How multilingual dreams are connected to language learning.

For many of us, our closest meeting with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures. It's an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in zoos—animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures(围场), removing bars, and, to some extent, copying their natural habitats.

Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes.

Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Protection at Salford University says: "We wouldn't have a lot of different species today if it wasn't for zoos." Some zoos have breeding (繁殖)programmes which help to preserve the future of species. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its protection work. It brought a rare fish species back from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river.

While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: "Taking a walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon."

(1)、What can be inferred from paragraph one?
A、The conditions for animals are improving. B、People used to kill animals for entertainment. C、Museums have led to the popularity of wildlife. D、Animal protection has always been the biggest concern.
(2)、The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 is mentioned to ____.
A、prove it is cruel to keep animals in zoos B、show zoos are making efforts to protect wildlife C、question whether it is useful to educate the public D、express not all the zoos are well managed
(3)、Why are some species in danger according to paragraph 3?
A、Because of little resources. B、Because of heavy pollution. C、Because of climate change. D、Because of illegal hunting.
(4)、What is Jon Coe's attitude towards meeting wildlife in the future?
    A、Doubtful. B、Worried. C、Unknown. D、Hopeful.

    A. J. was a beloved teacher at Brittany's high school, in Brooklyn. It was important to her that her daughter would make it. Brittany and Sean agreed.

Days later, on the morning of Friday, September 24, A. J. died. Keeping their promise, that very afternoon, Brittany walked arm in arm with her father across the football field with others await the outcome of the voting.

Brittany wasn't named homecoming queen that day; Nyla Covington was. But, like many in the closely linked community, Nyla had heard about A. J. In an unplanned gesture, moments after receiving the crown(王冠), Nyla walked over to Brittany, removed it from her head, and placed it atop Brittany's. The two held each other, tearfully for support. "She'd rather have her mom than a crown," Nyla told CNN. By handing it to Brittany, "I was telling her that she was her mom's queen, and that she was loved by many, especially me."

"I felt so much love from her, and I just felt so much love for her," said Brittany, who paid Nyla the highest praise, telling WDAM News, "I can see my mom through Nyla. They have the same caring, giving spirit."

Nyla is still noble (高尚的)despite lack of a crown, says Tyra Willamor, a friend of the Walters family. She told KTVU News, "There's a saying that real queens fix each other's crowns. But the truth is, real queens give up their crowns to let other queens shine."

(3)、What does Tyra Willamor mean by mentioning Nyla?
A、Nyla is as smart as a real queen. B、Nyla is only an ordinary girl. C、Nyla is a noble soul even without a crown. D、Nyla is faithful to her family and community.
(4)、What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A、To emphasize the significance of friendship. B、To share with readers the story of giving spirit. C、To describe how united a community is. D、To encourage people to join in homecoming games.

Paul and I were on our school basketball team, The Lions. We loved basketball and were both huge fans of the NBA. When we weren't playing on the court, we were watching a game on TV. My favourite player was LeBron James. Paul's favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, although we actually agree that they are both champions.

Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what? Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said, "If Bogues could make it, why not me?" Our coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. I knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. However, Paul didn't get a chance.

Then came the big day. We were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record of this season had been perfect. They hadn't lost a single game. Despite our best efforts, we were still 10 points behind The Bears. Without much time left, the last quarter began. Unfortunately, our team members got injured one after another.

All hope fell on me. Unfortunately, a player and I crashed into each other. With pain racing through my body, my knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The doctor put an ice pack on my knee, but it was still painful. Obviously, I could not play any more. The coach gave a deep sigh and murmured in a low voice, "We have no more players".

As we walk the "path of life", we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet periods of reflection can lead to personal improvement. However, social life is also important to us. More often than not, close friendships will help smooth out the sometimes rocky road that we are all meant to travel.

The first is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage.And a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! With true friends, we feel free to share our joy and sadness in full measure. Indeed, the human heart depends on such opportunities for comfort and protection.

We often find it easier to recognize other people's weaknesses than our own. As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgments might be one-sided. On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions. Also, when we want to talk our problems over with a friend, we have to put our thoughts into words first. This alone helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough understanding of our problems.

The last is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and skills.

By the way, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends. The relationships should be carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the "path of life" with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends.

    A. Friends should be carefully chosen.

    B. Then comes the recognition from our friends.

    C. Happiness shared takes on a greater meaning.

    D. Therefore, we can be much happier and wiser.

    E. They can help us achieve what we want in our life.

    F. The next is the better judgement and understanding.

    G. Generally speaking, close friendships have three "fruits".

When you think of a new place for growing food, you might think of Mars. But one Italian family believes one possible place is right here on the Earth: the ocean.

Nemo's Garden is the world's first underwater system of land plants. Located off the coast of Noli, Italy, it consists of several greenhouses called biospheres, each of which is attached to the seafloor. "The aim of it is to change agriculture, and add a possibility for growing produce in the ocean," says co-founder Luca Gamberini.

His father Sergio Gamberini came up with the idea by combining his two passions — diving and gardening. In 2012, the project began with planting basil (罗勒) underwater. Now Nemo's Garden is growing strong.

"Our limited number of resources can not promise sustainable (可持续的) development," Luca says, "and we believe that underwater gives us some advantages over traditional agriculture."

Floating six to ten meters underwater, plants in Nemo's Garden are separated from any outside pathogens (病原体). Also, the temperature of the ocean water is an ideal environment for plant life. Besides, Nemo's Garden uses a technique that uses water-based nutrients (养分) instead of soil. "Also, there is little interaction with the underwater environment and related ecosystems, which means no harm is caused to sea creatures," adds Luca.

Everything is monitored on land through cameras and sensors, and settings can be adjusted. When it's time to harvest, a diver will cut the vegetation, place it in bags and float them to the surface.

The team at Nemo's Garden has plans for even bigger biospheres in the future, as well as other locations. Luca believes the future of Nemo's Garden will be mostly along the coastlines where communities could benefit from the added space it offers.
