Dining in China: Culture Shock
Before coming to China, I thought of Chinese food as General Tso's chicken, egg rolls, and fortune cookies. In my first few weeks here, the group I was working with went out to dozens of group dinners. We were introduced to the Chinese way of dining out, and there was quite a bit of culture shock involved.
For one, the community style of dining was new to me. In America, I was used to sharing an appetizer with someone sometimes and then everyone ordering their own main course. In China, many dishes are ordered and placed on a lazy Susan. The table is spun around and you grab what you like. And we're not just talking a starter, a main, and dessert here; a Chinese dinner is a marathon of food. of course, there are always some staple foods around-rice, dumplings, or noodles. Soup comes last in a Chinese dinner instead of first, and dessert usually consists of a massive fruit plate.
Using chopsticks was also new to me and took quite some time to get used to. It was always embarrassing at first when I couldn't grab something tasty from the moving table and had to wait until the next time around. After years of practice, I can now confidently snatch a peanut as it's flying by me on a lazy Susan-practice really does make perfect! In the first few months, I was laughed at so many times by Chinese people while they watched me struggle with chopsticks. That probably explains why one of my favorite things to do while dining out in many Western restaurants in town is watching young, trendy Chinese people struggle with their forks and knives.
I had eaten chow mein before, as well as egg fried rice and Kung Pao chicken, but there were plenty of Chinese dishes that gave me culture shock in my first few months here. While Americans basically only eat chicken breasts, wings, and thighs, Chinese will also dig into the liver, heart and especially the feet. There's an old Chinese belief that eating an animal organ will benefit your corresponding organ-eating a heart is good for your heart, and eating a brain will make you smart. You can figure out the rest yourself.
Despite all of this food-related culture shock, I can honestly say that one of the best things about living here is the food and dining out. Chinese cuisine is so complex and varied that you could spend an entire lifetime here and not taste it all. To be honest, now when I go home to visit I actually end up missing Chinese food more. Sometimes, culture shock is a good thing!

A new study suggests the Apple Watch was able to identify abnormal heart rates that could be linked to a serious heart condition.
More than 400, 000 Apple Watch users volunteered for the study. It was a project of researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Apple, the American technology company, provided money for the study. Results were recently presented at a major conference on heart health in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The researchers looked for signs of atrial fibrillation, also called "a-fib", the most common form of irregular heartbeat. Some people with a-fib feel changes in their heartbeat, while others do not. Because of this, many people do not know they have the condition. People with untreated a-fib are about five times more likely to suffer a stroke (中风). In the United States, a-fib causes an estimated 130, 000 deaths and 750, 000 hospitalizations each year.
People taking part in the study wore the Apple Watch for extended periods. The devices contain an app that continuously gathers information without users having to do anything. It uses the watch's light sensor technology to measure blood flow. The system is designed to identify changes that might show an irregular heartbeat.
The researchers said that out of those taking part, about 2, 000 subjects (实验对象) received a warning from the device that they might have a problem. Those individuals were then asked to contact a doctor, who decided whether they should receive more close watch for a possible irregular heartbeat.
Lloyd Minor, head of Stanford's School of Medicine, said in a statement that the results show great promise in using technology to create "more predictive and preventive health care". Doctor Minor added that a-fib is just one example of a condition devices can help identify in the future. "This study opens the door to further research into wearable technologies and how they might be used to prevent disease before it strikes, " he said.
But some health researchers warned against making any general judgements based on the Apple-financed study. They have called for much more research to measure the effectiveness of wearable devices to identify signs of disease. Richard Kovacs, who was with the American College of Cardiology and was not involved with the study, told the Associated Press that despite the results, the Apple Watch system "is not perfect. " He noted that since the study did not have a comparison group getting regular ECG measurements, there is no way of knowing if the device missed heartbeat problems. This could give users a false sense of security, he said.
Other experts agreed that more studies are needed before similar device-based health observation systems are widely recommended.
(1)、What does the new study mainly find out?A、Apple Watch can warn of heart problems. B、Apple Watch can protect people against a-fib. C、Abnormal heart rates can cause a stroke. D、Heart problems can be identified and cured.(2)、Apple Watch identifies irregular heartbeats by ____.A、measuring the wearer's heart rates B、sending information to the wearer through an app C、extending the time of wearing it D、monitoring the wearer's bloodstream(3)、Which of the following might be what Lloyd Minor means in his statement?A、It's difficult for doctors to predict and prevent disease now. B、A-fib is just one example of a condition that causes heart problems. C、Wearable technologies might identify and treat any disease one day. D、There are more possibilities of development in wearable technology.(4)、It can be concluded from the passage that ____.A、wearable technologies are developing fast but shouldn't be applied to medicine B、the study results are inspiring but more proofs are needed to ensure the accuracy C、the study is sponsored by a commercial company so the results are a little unfair D、device-based health observation systems are convenient and should be widely used -

I fell in love with the minister's son the winter I turned fourteen. He was not Chinese. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food?
On Christmas Eve I saw that my mother had outdone herself in creating a strange menu. She was pulling back lines out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with piles of raw food: a fish with bulging eyes begging not to be thrown into a pan of hot oil, a bowl of soaking dried fungus back to life, a plate of squids whose backs were crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires.
And then they arrived — the minister's family and all my relatives. Robert said hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence. Dinner threw me deeper into despair. My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food. Robert and his family waited patiently for plates to be passed to them. My relatives whispered with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish. Robert made faces. Then my father poked his chopsticks just below the fish eye and pulled out the soft meat. "Amy, your favourite, " he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. I wanted to disappear. I remained silent for the rest of the night.
After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, "You want to be the same as American girls on the outside. But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame. "
(1)、The writer felt ____ upon knowing that the minister's family had been invited over for Christmas Eve dinner.A、excited B、worried C、disappointed D、confused(2)、In the second paragraph, the writer described the kitchen scene in such a way as to ____.A、paint a vivid picture of how busy her mother was B、explain the reason why her mother created such a menu C、support the claim that the Christmas menu was strange D、introduce the typical Chinese dishes served on Christmas Eve(3)、What can be inferred about the writer based on what happened during the dinner?A、She suffered greatly during the dinner. B、She hated eating the fish cheek below the eye. C、She regretted not talking more with Robert. D、She was picky about the Christmas menu.(4)、Why did the writer's mother have a talk with her that night?A、To inform her of the cultural gap between the east and the west. B、To share her understanding of the word "shame". C、To encourage her to become integrated into the local community. D、To urge her to be proud of her Chinese roots. -

Things I've Learned From My First Year Of High School
I just finished my first year of high school, and it has been different from middle school. High school has brought me so many different experiences. Some I am grateful for, yet some have not been beneficial. However, all of them have taught me so many different things, and I would not have been able to my first year of high school without them. The things I have learned have been so helpful to me and can also to things outside of school.
⒈ You're expected to demonstrate maturity and responsibility
High school teachers won't "hold your hand" as much as middle school teachers did. Your teachers may move faster through lessons. When you have questions or meet with challenges, it's important to speak up. If speaking up makes you nervous at first, you can start by using email to build your level and confidence.
High school teachers enforce higher standards, and most don't tolerate some of the behaviors that were acceptable in middle school. Again, the goal is to prepare you for college and real life. Even if the seems tough at first, remember that you're learning helpful and important life skills.
⒉Find out who your true friends are
Genuine friends are friends that you can tell everything to and they will not tell anyone else without your permission. They are also there whenever you need them, whether that is to rant or you just need a shoulder to cry on. When you find your true friends, stick with them. The thing about friends is: quality over .
To be honest, high school is not easy at first, but with time, you will get to appreciate and everything around your experiences. The memory will never , because it is the most memorable journey. I have learned so much during my first year of high school, and I am sure that I am going to learn a lot more.

Despite coming from a wealthy family, Adam and Cody were kind and helpful. Everybody in town knew their parents, but they preferred to keep a low profile(低调). One day, Adam and Cody sat on a bench in a park. They held up a sign that read, "Please help. "
They also set up a table with some items which they had put on sale. A homeless man usually sat on the bench they were on, but he was nowhere to be found. People gathered around them to see what happened.
A woman went up to them and asked, "Are you two okay? Why are you out here asking for help?"Adam admitted that they were there to help their friend who was currently in hospital.
Concerned, she secretly took a photo of them and sent it to their father, Peter. When he received the picture, he immediately left his meeting to pick up his children. However, when he arrived at the park, he was shocked by what he saw. Dozens of people had lined up to put money in a box and purchase items from the two teenagers. He approached them immediately. "Adam, Cody, what is going on here?" he asked.
Cody was frightened, but he answered, "Sorry, Dad. We didn't want you to see this, but we had to do what we could. A few weeks ago, we were walking home from school when we saw a homeless man named Carl sitting on this exact bench. We want to help him. "
"We have been bringing him tea and sandwiches every day, and he's been so grateful. We've also been spending a couple of minutes with him every day exchanging stories. He is such a kind man, Dad. A new app helps blind people know the world around them
One of the best uses of technology is to make life easier. A new product from Micro Corporation can just do that for people who have trouble seeing. The product, an app called Seeing
AI, is currently available for free for Apple's iPhone and iPad. "AI" is short for artificial intelligence, a term for computers with an ability to think and learn like human beings. The app then announces what the camera sees, so users will know what is in front of them.
People can also use Seeing AI to learn words in English. With Seeing AI, users can hear a description of not just objects, but other people. It can even tell you about their emotions.
It can read products' bar codes (条形码) so users will know whether a can is filled with fruit or dog food. Microsoft says Seeing AI will soon be able to identify banknotes, so people will know whether they are holding a bill that is worth $ 100 or $ 1.
People can use Seeing AI to identify images. People even use the app to read signs and get directions, although Microsoft warns against using it for navigation purposes.
Seeing AI is a new app and will not be 100% correct all the time. For example, that someone is smiling does not necessarily mean he or she is happy. The app recognizes text, but not handwriting yet.
The app is currently available in Canada, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States.
A. People can use the app when going shopping.B. That feature may be available in the future.
C. The app can identify more than one person in a photograph.
D. The app can identify what is in the image, as if it were right in front of you.
E. With the app, you can point your iPhone or iPad at any object and Seeing AI will say what the object is.
F . Seeing AI uses both a camera and artificial intelligence to identify places, objects and people.
G. With this intelligent app, just hold up your phone and hear information about the world around you.

What makes people so special? Tool use, self-consciousness, language, and culture are high on the list, but in fact all of these characteristics can be found elsewhere in the animal kingdom.
Humans and apes are close relatives, so it is perhaps not surprising that chimpanzees use tools or that gorillas (大猩猩) have a sense of fair play, even rejecting carrots (which they normally accept) when they see their neighbors getting grapes. But the qualities that we often think of as uniquely human exist not just on land, but in the ocean as well.
Among the invertebrates(无脊椎动物), octopuses (八爪鱼) are known for their intelligence, even exhibiting evidence of playfulness, tool use, and personality. But these skilled predators(捕食者) live alone and consequently lack culture. Dolphins, on the other hand, are large-brained, long-living, social- group-based predators, and it is here that we find the greatest similarity to human-like culture and awareness.
Culture depends on the ability of animals to pass on things they have learned to others. Many animals have culture in this sense, but what sets dolphins apart is what they pass on. Some bottlenose dolphins hold sponges in their mouths that they use as tools to sweep for fish hiding on the ocean floor. This ability is handed down through generations (especially in females), with some families- grandmother, mother, and daughter - all feeding in this highly specialized way.
Another characteristic that dolphins share with humans is their ability to recognize themselves in a mirror. When facing a mirror, most animals behave as though they are interacting with another individual. Even in humans, the ability to recognize that the image in a mirror is oneself does not occur before the age of 18 months. Dolphins not only recognize themselves, but if a black mark is put on the body of a dolphin, it will spend extra time at the mirror to look at the mark.
(1)、The example of gorillas rejecting carrots shows they ____.A、are not easy to fool B、prefer fruit to vegetables C、have a special taste for food D、have an awareness of equality(2)、What do octopuses lack compared with dolphins?A、Social interaction. B、Intelligence. C、Tool using ability. D、Fun-loving spirits.(3)、What makes dolphin culture special?A、They tend to hunt in groups. B、Their hunting skills are passed down. Each year, backed up by a growing anti-consumerist movement, people are using the holiday season to call on us all to shop less.
Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our "consumer culture", with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.
We clearly have a growing resource problem. The products we make, buy and use are often linked to the destruction of our waterways, biodiversity, climate and the land on which millions of people live, but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem.
While we complain about environmental destruction over Christmas, environmentalists often forget what the holiday season actually means for many people. In fact, for most, rather than an add-on to an already heavy shopping year, Christmas is likely the only time of year they have the opportunity to spend on friends and family, or even just to buy the necessities needed for modern life.
This is particularly true for Boxing Day, often laughed at by anti-consumerists the most. While we may look down on the queues in front of the shops, for many, those sales provide the chance to buy things they've needed all year. As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, "This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries', the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works. "
Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption "problem" anyway.
Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own £ 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system?
Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.
