Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called "zoo pharmacognosy" or, more commonly, animal self-medication.

Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.

Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other's fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).

While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.

This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.

(1)、Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?
A、They are trying to cure diseases. B、They would like to digest what they eat. C、They feel like occupying the land. D、They are attracting companions' attention.
(2)、What do researchers find through camera-traps?
A、Many animals copy monkeys' behaviors. B、Animals can help each other clean the fur. C、The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys. D、Resin can be used as medicine for some animals
(3)、What does the underlined word "magnitude" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A、Populations. B、Characteristics. C、Similarities. D、Flexibilities.
(4)、What is the possible significance of the discovery?
A、Promoting evolution of creatures. B、Increasing the production of resin. C、Contributing to forest conservation. D、Motivating the study of monkeys' diet.

FORT WORTH, Texas — If 14-year-old Ruhani Ahluwalia had her way, her days would be filled with time to let her curiosity run free. How can a doctor attack cancer with medicines that don't damage the patient? How can an artist touch a person with a hidden message in an oil painting? This is Ruhani's world — where the pursuit of learning leads to more learning for a self-described Renaissance teenager, who is multi-talented and has interests.

Since age 11, she has been working summers in a lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center researching cancer cells. She is testing drugs that can kill cancer cells while limiting the side effects on healthy cells. It's a special mission guided by the heart because she lost a great aunt to leukemia (白血病) when she was in the sixth grade.

"What really damaged her eventually was the treatment and the side effects of it, which kills both cancer and normal cells. " Ruhani explained. Due to this, Ruhani started her cancer research. "I wanted to find a better way to target cancer cells. "

During the summer between sixth and seventh grade, Ruhani began research in the study of cancer with the help of her mother, Parmeet Jodhka, a microbiology professor, who taught her daughter the necessary biology. Working from about 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. in the lab, she has finally presented her findings at multiple science fairs. Her list of accomplishments is five pages long and includes placing third in Brazil's science fair, MOSTRATEC, for her breast cancer research.

"I like learning, " she said, "There is a difference between learning and studying. Studying, you are too stuck in finishing it and in turning it in. Learning, you are doing more for yourself. "

(1)、What is Ruhani's research aimed at?
A、Testing how the cancer cells work. B、Saving her great aunt from leukemia. C、Relieving the pain of cancerous persons. D、Protecting healthy cells in cancer treatment.

"Number 7. Jobie Nymble, takes the lead. " Aquino cried the announcer. "Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and—"

    Cheers erupted.

"Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls'100-meter hurdles!" The crowd went wild as Jobie's teammates shouted. "Way to go, Sweet Jobie?" they yelled.

"County championships, here we come, " spoke excitedly Jobie, patting her worn neon-green track spikes (钉鞋). They were bursting at the seams (接缝), but she didn't care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. "Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold, " Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.

"Don't forget, guys, " said Marisol, one of her teammates. "My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park. " "Beep. Party recorded in calendar, " joked Jobie in her best robot voice.

Next weekend couldn't come soon enough, Jobie brimmed with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before.

The day of Marisol's party Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her swishy blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. "Perfect. " She smiled at herself in the mirror.

The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do a couple of sprints (短靴). Even at that end of the park, music and the smell of grilled food filled the air.

"Sweet Jobie!" Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. "Come on, " they shouted. "You have to try the slide. Jobie's eyes darted toward the party area. " "Slide? What sli—" Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable (充气的) slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Jobie chucked (抛出) her spikes and ran toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time. She plopped down, hurried to the edge, and closed her eyes as she let go. "Woo-hoo!" Jobie couldn't get enough. She conquered the slide again and again.

When it was finally time to go home, she reluctantly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.

A skywell or "tian jing" in Mandarin, is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China. (expose) less to the outdoor environment, a skywell is different from a northern Chinese courtyard. Skywells are (relative) common in historic residences in large areas of southern and eastern China.

In today's rapidly urbanising China, fewer and fewer people live in skywell dwellings, a revival of interest in traditional Chinese architecture is leading some of historic buildings with skywells (restore) for modem times. Meanwhile, some architects are drawing (inspire) from skywells to help keep new buildings cooler, which is a method (combine) design and technology to cool a building without the use of power.

However, there are some (challenge) for bringing skywells into modern designs. The mechanisms of courtyards facilitating natural lighting, ventilation (通风) and rain collection are well known, but applying these principles (need) to be site-specific. Because traditional skywells had different shapes, sizes and features, which were highly dependent their natural surroundings. Adding skywells into modern buildings requires designers to be sensitive to their project's context and situation, making it difficult to apply them as universal solution.

    Benefits of Personality Tests

Can identifying one's personality type using the MBTI and other personality assessments really help? They may.

    Better understand others

After taking a personality test and seeing our results, we can gain a better understanding of all the different perceptions and reactions that others might have to the same situation. . No personality type is "better" than any other — just different. Each perspective brings something new and interesting to the table.

    Identify our likes and dislikes

Maybe we've always hated talking on the phone but never really understood why. . By using personality tests like the MBTI, we can learn more about where we lie on the extroversion/introversion and thinking/feeling continuum (连续性). This helps us better understand why we prefer certain things and dislike others.

Learning more about our personality type can also help us discover new ways to approach challenges. Knowing what might work best for our personality type can give us new ideas on how to solve problems, deal with stress, cope with conflict, and manage our work habits.

    Recognize our strengths and weaknesses

Knowing what we are good at can be important in a wide variety of situations, whether we are picking a college major or thinking about running for a seat on our local school board. For example, if we know that we are an ISTJ (introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging) on the MBTI, we might recognize that certain aspects of our personality might qualify as strengths in some situations and weaknesses in others. , it can sometimes trip us up in situations where we need to let other people take control.

    A. Hold on to ideas about who we are

    B. Know which situations are ideal for us

    C. Here's an overview of the many benefits of personality tests

    D. While they reveal truth that showcases different aspects of personality

    E. While our organizational skills and carefulness can be a major strength in our work

    F. This is important because we all have different ways of seeing and interacting with the world

    G. Or perhaps we've always needed much time to think about a problem before making a decision

In recent years, scientists have discovered that mushrooms are much more than just a tasty addition to your favorite dish. In fact, they are the "Internet of trees" — a vast network of underground mycorrhizal (菌根的) fungi (真菌) that connects trees and other plants in a similar way to how the Internet connects people.

The mycorrhizal network is made up of hyphae (菌丝), which connect the roots of different plants and trees. These hyphae act like an underground internet, allowing plants to exchange nutrients, water, and even hormones (激素). For example, if one tree is under stress due to drought or disease, it can send out hormones to warn other nearby trees of the danger. The other trees can then prepare themselves for the coming threat.

Human beings can help trees and mushrooms by practicing "mycorestoration" in regenerative projects. With the Global Tree Initiative working towards reforestation and preserving natural habitats, it is important to share how mycorestoration can supply innovative ways to mitigate the impact of human activities.

Fungi are natural decomposers (分解器) that break down complex organic matter, like dead trees, into simpler compounds that can be absorbed by plants. This decomposition process is crucial for the health of our forests, as it contributes to nutrient cycling, soil formation, and carbon sequestration. By introducing native fungi species into areas where deforestation has occurred, we can help regenerate soil and support the growth of new trees. Fungi form symbiotic (共生的) relationships with tree roots, improving their ability to absorb water and nutrients. This increased access to resources accelerates tree growth and improves their resilience to stress, such as drought or disease.

Fostering sustainable communities through mycorestoration can be conducted through global partnerships that promote ecology within Ecovillage Design Education. The Global Ecovillage Network's presence in five continents and in over 8, 000 communities around the planet, helps the regenerative approach to community building and preservation of existing forests. By promoting sustainable land management practices and reducing our reliance on extractive industries, ecovillages can help prevent deforestation and protect the habitats of countless plant and animal species.

(1)、The "Internet of trees" can function as ____.
A、A linker of hormones. B、A warning of danger. C、A detector of diseases. D、A destroyer of nutrients.
(2)、What does the underlined word "mitigate" mean?

(3)、How do fungi help restore deforestation?
A、They produce more water and nutrients.  B、They help form complex plant-friendly compounds. C、They accelerate the process of carbon sequestration. D、They help with soil regeneration and tree growth.
(4)、What can be achieved through the Global Ecovillage Network?

Before humans stored memories as zeroes und ones, we turned to digital devices of another kind — preserving knowledge on the surface of fingers and palms.

When Mogao Caves was uncovered in 1900, an aging drawing was lifted from a trove of religious manuscripts. The drawing illustrates a mnemonic (助记符号) system, a way of projecting knowledge onto the hands so it can be studied, memorized, and stored in a pocket. Around the same time this mnemonic was made, a monk named Bede halfway around the world was developing a different system of manual knowledge. These two systems are perhaps the earliest examples of manual mnemonics.

Beginning roughly twelve hundred years ago, we started using the hand itself as a portable (便携的) place of knowledge, a place to store whatever tended to slip our mental grasp. The hand became an all-purpose memory machine.

In different times and places, hands provided mnemonic maps of sound. As early as the thirteenth century, Chinese scholars were projecting syllable charts (音节图表) onto the palms and fingers. The so-called "Guidonian hand" owes its name to the eleventh-century Italian music teacher, Guido d'Arezzo. Arranging the different pitches in a scale onto the joints, he developed this technique to help students learn "unheard melody most easily and correctly". Other thinkers in Europe, perhaps inspired by Guido, developed systems for learning the sounds of language.

Then questions arise. First, what makes the hand so popular as a mnemonic prop? A large part of the answer, surely, involves portability. The hands are always, well, ready to hand. A further advantage stems from how hand mnemonics offer both visual and kinesthetic (动觉的) routes to memory: They are both seen and felt.

It's also hard to determine when and why hand mnemonics faded out. Hand mnemonics are still used to teach the "right-hand rule" in physics classrooms and remain especially popular in medicine. Today we increasingly store our "thoughts" in virtual realms (领域), but we sometimes still reach for that original "digital" repository (存储库) in our pockets.

(1)、What do we learn about the two earliest examples of mnemonics?
A、Bede made a hand mnemonic in Mogao Caves. B、They are the same system of manual knowledge. C、The drawing was uncovered on the fingers and palms. D、The drawing from Mogao Caves illustrates a mnemonic system.
(2)、What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A、Human hands mapped sound charts. B、Human hands played a role in sound mnemonics. C、Guido helped his students learn unheard melody. D、Scholars projected syllable charts onto the palms and fingers.
(3)、Why does the hand gain popularity as a mnemonic prop?
A、The hand is always available for use. B、The hand can feel what people memorize. C、Fingers can easily be marked with characters. D、Hand mnemonics help memorize visible things.
(4)、What's the author's attitude towards the future of hand mnemonics?
    A、Positive. B、Pessimistic. C、Uncertain. D、Indifferent.

At 98, Dick Van Dyke still sings with his group, The Vantastix, and still makes it all look easy. When asked how important it is that he's having fun when he's doing it, Van Dyke replied, "My whole career has relied on that. It's such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love. I feel so sorry for people who hate their job. I look forward to going to work every morning!"

And some of his work helped define a generation. Take "The Dick Van Dyke Show"; it ran for five years on CBS, and it was such a hit that they're bringing it back. This week, CBS aired a two-hour tribute (致敬), "Dick Van Dyke, 98 Years of Magic", and for the occasion, they recreated the original Dick Van Dyke Show" set, down to that well-known sofa.

Early in his career Van Dyke was quoted as saying he only wanted to make films his children could watch. That got the attention of Walt Disney, who promptly cast him in "Mary Poppins". And his next few films were equally family-friendly, like "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, " which happened to have been co-written by James Bond creator Ian Fleming. From then on, Van Dyke was almost always assigned to play the good guy, though he claims to have missed out on a choice part: "Yeah, I could have been James Bond. When Sean Connery left, the producer said, ‘Would you like to be the next Bond?' I said, ‘Have you heard my British accent?' That's a true story!"

It seems that in show biz the true legends never stop. In an interview from 2017 with his friends, Van Dyke described what it was like hitting 90: "People are more afraid of aging than they are of death these days. And I want to say that remain young in heart and there's a lot of good living to do. "

(1)、What can we infer from Dyke's reply in Paragraph 1?
A、He enjoys his job. B、He hates morning work. C、He sees his job as a burden. D、He prefers leisure to work.

(3)、Which statement is true about Dyke's career?
A、His films are rarely family-friendly. B、His films are only made for his children. C、Van Dyke was always playing the good guy. D、Van Dyke had the chance to play James Bond.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?

As more and more pieces are added, the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee. You can become quite skilled soon because playing the game is easy — even though you have to be on your toes thinking through each move.

    Blokus (Ages: 7 and up)

Blokus Board Game received a Mensa award for promoting healthy brain activity.

    About the Game:

The goal of this game is for the players to fit all of their pieces onto the board. The piece cannot lie next to the other player's pieces. But it must be placed touching at least one corner of their pieces already on the board. The player who gets rid of all of their tiles (棋子) first is the winner. The game can be repeated for more family fun.

    Codenames (Ages: 14 and up)

Codenames is a family game for 4-8 players.

    About the Game:

There are two opposing spymasters who know the identity of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Teammates try to guess words while avoiding those belonging to the opposing team. The team managing to contact all their agents first wins the game.

Martin was returning home after a difficult shift(轮班)on a dark snowy night. He worked as a truck driver in Los Angeles, taking several shifts a week because he had a sick daughter, Anne, who needed urgent surgery, but he wasn't sure if he'd be able to raise enough money for it.

Anne was diagnosed with a cyst(囊肿)shortly after birth. The doctors told Martin and his wife Helen that she needed an operation as soon as possible, otherwise, it could pose a threat to the little girl's life. The parents decided they should do whatever it took to save their daughter and began saving money right away.

It was too black outside with no visibility(能见度). Martin was driving slowly, thinking of solutions to his problem when he noticed a shadow in the middle of the road. He hit the brakes and the truck came to a complete stop. Rubbing his eyes, Martin looked more closely. A human figure—a woman lying unconscious in the middle of the road!

Martin picked up the woman, carried her to his truck, quickly changed his route and drove straight to the hospital. About 10 minutes later, they finally arrived at the hospital. "It's an emergency! Please call the doctor!" he screamed at the top of his lungs. The woman was admitted to hospital at once.

The next day, Martin went to the hospital to see the woman. The woman was Daisy, who was a rich businesswoman. Daisy expressed her gratitude to him and told him the whole story about how she ended up on the road. "Thank you so much, Martin. You're a really generous soul. I heard you drove me to the hospital last night and that you have been here a few times with your daughter."

  • 17、 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

What does it mean to take responsibility? What does being a responsible person mean? Responsibility is a virtue that everyone should have. But it seems that nowadays most people are willing to take convenience over responsibility.  After all, your world is a reflection of you and you alone.

Being responsible means being aware. The first step of responsibility starts with being aware of your actions. Consciously or unconsciously, your actions are affecting those around you. Be responsible and be mindful of every word you say and every act you commit.

Seize the present moment, and do all you can today to become a more responsible person. Your responsible acts today will lead to a responsible future.

Being responsible involves humility(谦逊). Responsibility means accepting the consequences of your actions, even if it is the expense of your ego(自我). We all make mistakes.  By accepting responsibility, we can improve our integrity. Nothing says more of our integrity than the way we handle responsibility.

Accept responsibility, learn from your mistakes, and move on with your life. Don't ever feel it is too late to accept responsibility for wrong actions in the past. Do what is right, and give your soul the peace it deserves.

    A. So what can you do to be more responsible?

    B. The matter is outside our area of responsibility.

    C. Do it with a sense of pride and a spirit of adventure.

    D. Don't ignore what you do to others or how you hurt them.

    E. Taking responsibility means attending to the needs of the present.

    F. It is a natural part of life, especially when we act without paying much attention.

    G. That is the healthiest and most beneficial way to accept our mistakes and failures.

Mexico City is making various strategies to fight against severe water shortage, as a years-long lack of rainfall continues to impact the local water supply. The water crisis is a direct result of falling levels of rain within the Cutzamala System, which supplies the city of nearly 10 million people, and of its primary water source, the Valle de Bravo reservoir. Levels at the reservoir have fallen significantly after years of limited rainfall.

"Mexico currently has a major problem in terms of water due to climate change," Sandra Lopez, a research er at the public policy research center Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, said. "But it can also be very much linked to the country's management problems, since we have different factors, such as the fact that not enough resources and financing have been allocated to management." This, for obvious reasons, means that the population and Mexican society in general is experiencing water stress, which we are only just identifying as a potential problem.

The water shortage affects about one-fourth of the population in the Mexican capital, which is witnessing daily water disruptions(中断)in various areas, making it difficult for residents to undertake essential tasks such as cooking, cleaning and bathing. "In the neighborhood where I am, they start to cut off the water supply at about 1 1 am. It comes very slowly," Sergio Ramos, a clerk at Navycar car wash in Mexico City, said. The water supply only lasts seven or eight hours a day, he said. Amid the continuing crisis, the federal, state and city governments are urging citizens to conserve water by fixing faulty faucets(水龙头), making use of waste water, and taking shorter showers. These actions, aimed at reducing consumption, could contribute to extending the city's water supply. With the shortage projected to last until May, water conservation efforts will have to continue for some time.

Some citizens are actively employing measures such as using rainwater or bottled water, while the government is pursuing additional strategies, including reducing water consumption in public buildings, using innovative water-saving devices, and making a plan to augment the city's water supply. Educational initiatives are also underway to the Cutzamala System.

"The Cutzamala System dams are at low storage levels due to the lack of rain and the drought in the country, "said Mexico City Water System, which manages the city's drinking water supply. "In this context, at the same time there have been low levels of storage in the tanks that distribute water in the Azcapotzalco district."

The National Water Commission, or Conagua, explained that there is a 29 percent deficit(缺乏)in the country's reservoirs, compared with historical data for November.

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people who are worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.

The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2012. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.

Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. So they spend less time thinking about bad experiences. Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be connected to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

(1)、How was the new study carried out?
A、By conducting some experiments. B、By reasoning, analyzing and judging. C、By collecting data from some people. D、By referring to some historical documents.
(2)、What is the result of the study?
A、Stress levels fell greatly after people were 50 or above. B、Older people were most worried about being unemployed. C、Men at all ages felt sadder and more stressful than women. D、Levels of stress were the highest among adults in their thirties.
(3)、Why may aged people get happier according to the research?

①Having young children  ②Becoming more grateful  ③Being living alone

④There being changes in brain chemistry  ⑤Controlling their emotions better

    A、②③④ B、①②⑤ C、②④⑤ D、①③④
(4)、Which was most probably included in the survey?
A、The participants' intelligence. B、The participants' eyesight. C、The participants' strength. D、The participants' fear.

A cancer survivor has become the first woman to complete an exhausting "Sea to Summit" triathlon(三项全能运动), which saw her swim, cycle, and run over 330 miles in just five days. Andrea Mason was overjoyed when she crossed the finish line early Wednesday morning.

The race was set in the French Alps. Setting off at 6: 15 am on Friday, 39-year-oldMason battled through severe pain, and hallucinations(幻觉), but she pushed on—managing to complete the race in an impressive four days, 23 hours, and 41 minutes. Andrea had been diagnosed with cancer and needed life-saving surgery. Following a successful operation, she is now hoping to raise awareness of women's health. In the past year, Andrea set up her own charity, Lady Talk Matters, in order to improve surrounding females' health.

Andrea, from Blackpool in Lancashire, England, said, "I am so happy all went according to the plan as there were so many things that could have gone wrong. I wanted to do it in five days and I did so, but it was very tough. I had some low moments, particularly when I couldn't sleep in my limited rest periods, and when I couldn't keep any food down as I was running. For sure, I had some doubts along the way as I was exploring the unknown with such a huge run, particularly as large parts of it were in the dark. It was bigger than I imagined. The impact on my body was huge. But every time I felt like giving up, I thought about all the women out there in pain or who still hadn't been diagnosed. That is why I put myself through this."

Andrea had to swim 23 miles around Lake Annecy, cycle 205 miles with 30,000 feet of vertical climbing around Mont Blanc, and run 105 miles with 4,000 feet of vertical climbing around The Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc.
