The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special meal. I glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.

As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face him laughing at my work.

I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Dad got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.

Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in the rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.

Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the "living thing" was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为 150左右:2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

My dad tapped me gently on the shoulder, and we went inside.

Parthiban's journey started after he struggled his first degree. He was a disorganized student would often mix up coursework and study for the wrong test— leading him to fail major exams and projects. After he graduated. Parthiban got a job working for the Judiciary Department, but the desire to study never (complete) went away. Attracted by all the (amaze) subjects and areas of study that were available to (he) in university, Parthiban decided to go back and seek a second degree, and then 143 more. When asked there was a subject he didn't enjoy studying, Parthiban answered "mathematics" without any doubt.

When it comes to having fun in the sun, it's easy to lose track of time. If you're not careful, this can be quite dangerous. But it can easily be prevented—all you need is a little sunscreen.

People have been using chemical pastes to protect themselves from the sun for centuries. But the first modern sunscreen sold on the market was offered by French company: L'oreal in 1935.

Several other companies were quick to release their own sunscreens. Perhaps the biggest advancement in the world of sunscreen came in the 1970s, when scientists started looking at the sun protection factor, or SPF.

The advantages of using sunscreen are obvious. It limits the painful effects of sunburn.Millions of people have died from skin cancer caused by ultraviolet rays from the SUITL. Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.

Unfortunately, there are many mistaken ideas about sunscreen.Some also think you only need to put it on once for a whole day's protection or that you don't need it on cloudy days. None of these things are true. Experts say you should apply sunscreen every two hours when outside in the daytime, no matter how dark your skin is or what the weather is like.

    A. And it can even save your life.

    B. Sunscreen is not exactly a recent invention.

    C. Choosing a sunscreen isn't as simple as it used to be.

    D. In direct sunlight, sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.

    E. This rating is a number that shows how effective a sunscreen is.

    F. It's believed that you don't need much sunscreen if you have dark skin.

    G. Some think a good method is to cover as much as possible with protective clothing.

A year of lockdown has brought about some questionable fashion trends. In US suburbs, bathrobes and slippers are now socially-acceptable clothing for a trip to the grocery store.

Ugly shoes are also having a moment. Crocs, the maker of plastic clogs木屐 now with a market worth of $5.3 billion, had a record 2020. The distinctive shoes, with their punch (打孔机) hole design, have long been popular with hospital staff. During the COVID-19 outbreak, they have become a sought-after item for those looking for something easy to wear and clean. The company sold more than 69 million pairs of shoes in 2020 and pulled in nearly $1.4 billion, a 13% jump from 2019. The share price, up 650 per cent from its pandemic low, has set repeated new highs this year.

Birkenstock is another brand riding high on the shift to a more casual lifestyle. The German group recently sold itself to a LVMH-backed group in a €4 billion deal.

The two brands' popularity shows no sign of fading. Poshmark, the second-hand clothing app, said Crocs and Birkenstock remained top trending brands on its site in March. Sales are up sharply for both compared with the year-ago period. Cooperation with celebrities (Justin Bieber for Crocs, women's brand Proenza Schouler for Birkenstock) should help maintain the trend.

The same cannot be said for dress shoes, which were already falling out of fashion. Office closures and fewer special occasions such as weddings and graduations have accelerated the trend. Sales for the category plummeted last year, according to market researchers The NPD Group. These accounted for only 8% of total fashion footwear dollar sales in 2020, compared with 17% in 2017.

People will soon reach again for going-out clothes, more formal than pajamas(睡衣). But the market for dress shoes will never recover entirely. The ugly shoe movement is here to stay.

(1)、What does the underlined word "plummeted" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A、Increased sharply. B、Increased slightly. C、Decreased sharply. D、Decreased slightly.
(2)、What's the author's opinion apout the prospect of ugly shoes?
    A、Uncertain. B、Pessimistic. C、Cautious. D、Confident.
(3)、What can be tho best title of this passage?
A、Crocs give dress shoes a kicking. B、Casual clothes are making a comeback, C、Punch hole design becomes a trend. D、Dress shoes are falling out of fashion.
(4)、What's the purpose of this text?
A、To recommend new shoes. B、To present a new tendency. C、To change people's lifestyle. D、To question a fashion trend.

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the baii cost?

If you answered 10 cents, you're not alone— most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It's an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses—answers we feel are true. People give answers that "pop into their mind," says Steven Sloman. We don't spend much time "reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.

The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But "the trick with fake news is to know to verify"— in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.

The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. "The scientists' confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding," Sloman says.

According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion. This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. "If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest," Sloman says, "then you're going to start thinking that you understand, too."

Another explanation for the spread of fake news is motivated reasoning," writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor, "we are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions."

So, in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities. "We should check things and not just take them at face value," Sloman says. "Verify before you believe."

(1)、Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question?
A、To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned. B、To show that there are various answers to a question. C、To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion. D、To arouse people's interest in playing guessing games.
(2)、In paragraph &, what does the underlined word "verify" mean?
A、To make sure something is true. B、To think about something for a long time. C、To express an opinion about something. D、To follow your intuitive response.
(3)、When do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain?
A、When some of the volunteers explained it to them. B、When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works. C、When they have more confidence in themselves. D、When they believed that scientists understood it.
(4)、Which of the following is an example of "motivated reasoning"?
A、You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively. B、You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a news story. C、You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media. D、You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.

The bell rang. Jada sighed, slowly moved from the lockers where she had been leaning, and headed down the hall to her chemistry class. Honors Chemistry! Jada couldn't believe that her mom was making her take the class because Jada's counselor had said that she had real talent in science.

Jada had to admit that she liked science and that last year's class was a breeze, but come on, Honors Chemistry? She wouldn't know anyone in the class, and they probably wouldn't know anyone like her.

The good thing about being late is that it shortened the period a bit. The bad thing is that it made her seem like she was making a grand entrance. To make matters worse, the only two seats left in class were at the lab table at the very front of the room.

Jada held her breath and walked in. Everyone's eyes were on her. She just knew it.

They were staring at her coal black hair (freshly dyed), her black lipstick, her black fingernail polish, and her thrift-store black leather jacket. All she saw were polo shirts and khaki pants.

This can't get any worse, Jada thought. But at least she didn't get shouted at by the teacher. He was too busy talking to a new kid, a HUGE new kid, who had to weigh at least 250 pounds. A football player, probably. She hated football players. They thought they were so great. That group of jocks that hung out by the cafeteria always made fun of her.

The new kid made his way over to her table with his head down. He had to squeeze into the seat, and his legs wouldn't fit under the lab table. He shot Jada a glance and turned red.

Mr. Martin, the teacher, began class with this announcement: "Okay, everyone. I know most of you know each other from last year's Honors Physical Science class." Jada sighed loudly. "But just take a minute and introduce yourself to the person sitting at your table. You'll be partners. You'll be working closely together all year."

Jada rolled her eyes and stared straight ahead. Then she heard a surprisingly soft voice from next to her. "Hi, I'm Robert. I'm new here."

(1)、What can you learn about Jada from the first two paragraphs?
A、She found she didn't like science as she thought. B、She was angry that her mother made her go to school. C、She wasn't willing to take the Honors Chemistry class. D、She thought this year's chemistry class would be a breeze.
(2)、The writer described Jada's appearance in paragraph 4 in order to____
A、reveal how different she was from her classmates B、explain why she was late for school that morning C、imply that she felt sorry for making a grand entrance. D、give readers a general impression of science students
(3)、In paragraph 5, the phrase "that group of jocks" refers to____
    A、the new kid B、football players C、Jada's teacher D、Jada's classmates
(4)、What can we learn about the new kid according to the passage?
A、He was shy. B、He was rude. C、He liked sports. D、He looked sad.

To me, you can become a hero just by deciding to go for a run every morning. But what if you stop your run to save a group of pets from a burning house? That's the making of a superhero.

The sun rose in the buzz of the alarm clock, and a new day began. Paul Murphy turned off his alarm, put on his running clothes and went out for his daily run. When he was running past a house, he saw a smoking garage. He stopped at the house and pressed the button on the newly installed ring doorbell camera. No one was home, so he heard a recording, "He can't answer the door right now, but if you'd like to leave a message, you can do it now." Murphy was wild with anxiety, because he could do nothing but dial 911.Just after a while, a woman's voice came through the speaker, "Hi!"

"Hello?" he said in the video. "There's smoke coming out of the top of your house."

Not good! Courtney Polito, who owns the home and was the voice coming through the ring speaker, heard the house's smoke alarms going off.

At this very moment, she was on duty in her office 48 miles away and her husband and kids were out on holiday. What worried her most were her four loving pets. But in the face of the emergency, every second counted. Polito had no time to think, and she gave Murphy the security code to enter her home and save her pets. After getting the access code, Murphy ran into the house to save the family's two dachshunds(腊肠犬), a cat, and a rabbit. When I was at Donghua University in Shanghai, I had an honor of showcasing our traditional Uzbek dances at a cultural event for international students, (introduce) my culture to others. It was a remarkable experience (teach) and share our unique dance form, and it left  lasting impression.

However, outside of campus, I often found myself wandering into the park, in  I would sit and watch people dancing on the square. This public activity goes beyond age and background, offering a medicine to the (lonely) and physical inactivity that often accompanies aging. It was a heartwarming demonstration to the inclusiveness (包容性) and vitality of modern Chinese society: older people  retired people gather, not just to exercise, but to socialize and form more new (connection).

Negative people don't do as well in any area of life including school, work, family, or friendships as those who are more optimistic and pleasant. Nobody enjoys spending time with someone who complains or criticizes. Grateful people are happier, kinder, more helpful, and more popular. .

    Catch your kid being wonderful

In everyday life, it is easy to focus on what is going wrong. Practice being aware of those moments your child is doing something good, kind, or brave. .

    Start a bedtime gratitude practice

Think about one thing in your life for which you are grateful. It can be a person, an activity, a future plan or even a possession. Think about how you have been or will be important in making that a happy part of your life until you fall asleep. . It is particularly useful for a child or adult who has a hard time falling asleep.

Just like adults, kids are getting annoyed when they're hungry, tired, cold or otherwise uncomfortable. So do your best to give your child a predictable routine of meals, playtime, outdoor time and rest.

    Celebrate being alive

. And they usually respond well when we encourage them to focus on the goodness, surprises, and amazing beauty we can always find here and now. Notice your child's hopeful smile, your neighbor's flower garden, and colors that surround you. Say thank you to those that brighten your day.

    A.Avoid predictable negative experiences

B.Making this a habit leads to a deeper sleep

C.Be frequently, openly and intentionally grateful

D.Children are much better than adults at living in the moment

E.Fortunately, there are some simple ways to practice gratitude

F.Let your gratitude be the beginning of wonderful things to come

G.Show your child how much you appreciate their presence in your life

A research model of dietary intake in 184 countries, developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, estimates that poor diet contributed to over 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes(糖尿病) in 2018, representing over 70% of new diagnoses globally. The analysis, which looked at data from 1990 and 2018, provides valuable insight into which dietary factors are driving the burden of type 2 diabetes in the world region.

Of the 11 dietary factors considered, 3 had an outsized contribution to the rising global incidence of type 2 diabetes: insufficient intake of whole grains, excesses of refined(精制的)rice and wheat, and the overconsumption of processed meat. Factors such as drinking too much fruit juice and not eating enough non-starchy vegetables, nuts, or seeds, had less of an impact on new cases of the disease.

"Our study suggests poor carbohydrate quality is a leading driver of diet-attributable type2 diabetes globally, and with important variation by nation and over time," said senior author Dariush Mozaffarian, Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition. "These new findings reveal critical areas for national and global focus to improve nutrition and reduce devastating burdens of diabetes."

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by the resistance of the body's cells to insulin(胰岛素). Of the 184 countries included in the Nature Medicine study, all saw an increase in type 2 diabetes cases between 1990 and 2018, representing a growing burden on individuals, families, and healthcare systems.

The analysis revealed that poor diet is causing a larger proportion of total type 2 diabetes incidence in men versus women, in younger versus older adults, and in urban versus rural residents at the global level. Regionally, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, particularly in Poland and Russia, where diets tend to be rich in red meat, processed meat, and potatoes, had the greatest number of type 2 diabetes cases linked to diet.
