A  (remark) image of the Andromeda Galaxy, located over 2 million light-years from Earth, has been released after the use of the most powerful wide-field telescope in the Northern Hemisphere, demonstrating its capability. 

China's Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST) (put) into operation on Sunday in Northwest China's Qinghai Province, developed by the University of Science and Technology of China and the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The telescope, is also known as the Mozi surveying telescope, will be (extreme) useful for enhancing China's capabilities in time-domain astronomical (天文的) research, according to CAS. According to CAS, the WFST boasts an optical telescope of 2.5 meters in diameter and a 765-million-pixel camera, equipping it  the strong surveying ability that allows it to survey the entire northern sky every three nights. 

The Andromeda Galaxy is  closest large spiral (旋涡) galaxy to the Milky Way and  (have) a similar structure and metallicity, making it an ideal research object for exploring the formation and evolution of the Milky Way and similar galaxies. The WFST has both a large field of view  high-resolution imaging capabilities, enabling it to take multicolor images of the Andromeda Galaxy and its outlying regions. The telescope generated the image using 150 photos  (take) on multiple nights of observation.

Change can be hard. It means a lack of certainty and predictability.  Here are some tips to give your teen to help them cope with change in a healthy way. 

Many times, our first response to change is to either deny it, fight it, or run away from it. Unfortunately, none of these strategies help us cope with change successfully. Most of the time we can't control change, but we can control our response to it. Sometimes, simply saying "things are changing, and that's OK" can make us feel better.

Control what you can.  Having some things that stay the same like walking the dog every evening after dinner reminds us that some things are still the same and allows our brain to rest. It can also help to plan whatever is still in our control or set goals for areas we want to see improve. Useful strategies can include focusing on the problem at hand, developing a plan for action, and asking for advice. 

Identify your fears. Our imaginations can get the best of us sometimes, and we might exaggerate the problem. Honestly evaluate the change and consider what the worst case is. Determine what specifically is making you worried. 

Talk about solutions more than feelings. One of the most common myths (谬见) of coping with unwanted changes is the idea that we can "work through" our anger, fears, and frustrations by talking about them a lot. In fact, research shows that repeatedly broadcasting negative emotions can make us feel worse. As you talk about the change you are facing, make sure you are focusing on the problem and possible solutions, and avoid focusing solely on your feelings.

As the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) keep growing, some companies are hiring "AI prompt (提示) engineers" to help them get the best out of the emerging technology. Are these jobs set to become a universal presence, or are they a passing fad (时尚)? Generative AI creates text or images in response to prompts entered by the user. This can be as simple as asking for something in plain English, similar to using a search engine. But there is a key to it: including the right references and keywords that can guide AI towards the desired outcome.

"By buying a pre-built prompt given by prompt engineers, you can ensure the AI model will generate what you want. The average price is $3.50, but some prompts can cost hundreds of dollars," says Ben Stokes, the founder of Prompt Base. Most of the prompt engineers on the site don't have a technical background. The engineers tend to come from a photography or graphic design background, and those working on prompts for generating text used to work in marketing or copy writing.

Aaron Sines at US recruitment firm Razoroo has been placing engineers into AI jobs for five years, but only came across the term "prompt engineer" earlier this year. Sines says that a lot of the companies approaching him looking for a "prompt engineer" are actually seeking a more rounded AI researcher with technical skills. He believes AI models could become better at extracting (提取) information from humans about what they want, making the idea of a specialized prompt engineer obsolete, but thinks there will always be a need for humans to oversee AI models during development and application.

Zhan Qin at Zhejiang University in China says complex prompts, and the prompt engineers who create them, are unlikely to disappear any time soon because AI models aren't like traditional algorithms (算法) that work on logic and can be entirely understood by humans. "Some prompts are short. But there are a lot of very, very long prompts. Even the generators of those prompts do not know the exact meanings behind those magical words," says Qin.

Different photoreceptors (视细胞) in the eyes can affect how we see the world around us. Animals including bees and some birds can see ultraviolet light (紫外线) that human eyes cannot see. By reconstructing the colors that we know animals can see, scientists can learn more about how they communicate and find their position. Getting an accurate view of what animals are seeing has been a challenge, but a camera system developed by scientists at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and George Mason University in Virginia could help ecologists and filmmakers create videos that closely copy the colors that different animals see in their natural environments. 

The camera system builds on the current technique called spectrophotometry. By using this technique, images are taken at specific wavelength ranges that are typically beyond what humans can see. However, using the method can be time-consuming, produce false colors, require specific lighting conditions, and can't always capture (拍摄) something that is moving. To overcome some of these limitations, the team developed a camera and software system that captures animal-view videos of moving objects under natural lighting conditions.

One of the cameras records videos in four different color channels at the same time: blue, green, red, and UV. That data is then processed into perceptual units using a popular programming language called Python. This generates a more accurate video of how animals see those colors. The team tested this new system against the traditional spectrophotometry methods and their new system predicted the perceived colors with an accuracy of over 92 percent. "Our project was quite involved, and we had many surprises along the way," says Daniel Hanley, a leading researcher. "The most surprising thing that we discovered was how much clouds can impact an observed color. We didn't tend to notice these shifts, but they were notable."

"We plan to apply the camera system as broadly as possible. Currently, we are exploring a range of applications," says Hanley. "Our hope is that through community engagement our designs can improve and we will gather many novel observations about colors in nature."

I received a rejection email 2 weeks after interviewing for a postdoc position. When I read it, I felt angry because I didn't even know why I wasn't successful. After applying for a job at a consulting company, I got a phone call from a company representative. "Unfortunately, we decided to offer the job to someone else," the voice said. Again I felt discouraged. But the conversation wasn't over. The representative went on to tell me I hadn't clearly expressed my motivation for applying for the position and why I wanted to work for the company. The feedback (反馈) was tough to hear. But I quickly realized he was right.

From then on, I decided to carefully evaluate each job opening and only pursue the ones that I was passionate about. In my applications, I also began stating more clearly why I wanted that particular job. Soon the approach started to pay off, as I got an offer for a postdoc position in Poland that I was truly excited about. 

A few years later, I found myself on the other side of the interview table. As a freshly hired group leader, I was interviewing candidates for the first Ph. D. position in my lab. I was particularly looking forward to talking with one candidate; on paper, his application looked great-nice CV, good recommendations, strong cover letter. But the interview went badly. He didn't seem to have done any reading in advance about the research I was doing, which made me wonder whether he was truly interested in working with me. When I called to tell him I couldn't offer him the position, I asked him if he wanted to know where he could improve in future interviews. As the conversation went on, I got the sense that he was grateful for what I said.

I've since filled several positions in my lab. For each recruitment (招募), I've made a point to treat every interview as a trade: Candidates invest time and effort to prepare for our conversation-and if they don't get the position, the least I can do is reward their effort with pointers on how they can improve.

If something that you' re doing doesn' t challenge you, then it doesn' t change you.  You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone. So challenge the following limits:

Figure out what you' re scared of and do it continuously.

Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this.

Like the rest of us, scientists have long suspected the healing capacity of a good hug. Unlike the rest of us, they' ve gone about trying to prove it.

" Laboratory studies suggest that things like hugs help us feel safer. They can also make us less sensitive to physical pain and less reactive when we' re faced with threatening experiences, " says Michael Murphy. He is a research professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tec h University. " This lab work has shown that hugs and other touch behaviors are related to stress. The more stress we have, the more our heart rates and blood pressure go up. At this time, hugs and other forms of personal touch may give off all sorts of feel-good chemicals, so that stress can be reduced." 

" There' s a lot that we still need to learn, and there' s a lot we don' t know, " Murphy says. " However, what seems to be rising up is that hugs, as well as other forms of loving and gentle touch, are really powerful. They remind people that they' re cared about and that they have someone in their corner." 

" We expect touch. When we were born, we were placed in our mothers'  arms almost immediately. In that first year of our life, we spend a lot of time being held by other people. And as we grow up, we seek out hugs and touch as a way of connection. I think what we have lost in the past few years are these really easy opportunities to be reminded of connection." 

While he was at Carnegie Mellon, Murphy was the lead author of a hug-centered 2018 article in the scientific journal PLOS One. In a series of interviews with 404 adults over a two-week period, the researchers found that receiving a hug is associated with the attenuation of negative emotions that occur on days with interpersonal conflicts. That is to say, generally, hugs help to reduce the negative impacts that personal conflicts may cause in our daily lives.

There was a lot of news related to artificial intelligence, or AI, and machine learning. Among the stories were two dealing with direct competitions between humans and machines.

In one competition, machines that used AI performed better than human beings in a high-level reading test. Two natural language processing tools beat humans in the experiment. One of the tools was built by the American technology company Microsoft. The other was created by Chinese online seller Alibaba Group.

In another competition, a computer took on humans in live, public debates.

The event demonstrated how AI-powered computers are increasingly being developed to think and sound like humans. The organizer of the debates, U. S. technology company IBM, announced split results. It said a majority of those watching said they felt the machine had done more to improve their knowledge of the subject. But, the human got more praise for communicating their ideas.

This year, we also explored the many ways AI and machine learning are now being used. For example, some U. S. judges use machine learning systems to help them decide when, and for how long, criminals should be jailed. The system uses computers to examine data from thousands of court cases.

One fast-growing area of AI is facial recognition, which is increasingly being used for security purposes. Recently, Atlanta' s Hartsfield-Jackson airport became the first in the U. S. to permit passengers to use fa cial recognition technology to get on flights. A Chinese company showed off an AI system it developed to recognize individuals by body shape and walking movements. The system is already being used by Chinese police in Beijing and Shanghai.

In addition, machine learning was used during 2018 to predict results of the World Cup soccer competition. The technology also created artwork that was sold for a large amount of money. And it is being used to help farmers save time and money, while reducing environment-harming chemicals. Other technology systems are being used to follow farm animals and wildlife to collect information on their activities.

Johannes Fritz, a biologist, needed to come up with a plan, again, if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct.

To survive the European winter, the northern bald ibis (秃鹃) — which had once disappeared entirely from the wild on the continent — needs to migrate south for the winter, over the Alps, before the mountains become blocked. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate, and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap. Determined to save them, Mr. Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unusual plan —because he had done it before.

Mr. Fritz was his young pupils'  only provider of food and love since they' d been just a few days old, and the ibises eagerly followed their teacher. He learned to fly, modifying a tiny aircraft so it would fly at speeds slow enough for his winged students to keep up. In 2004, three years after some experiments, Mr. Fritz led the first flock from Austria to Italy, and has since led 15 such migrations. Over that time, he has rewilded (放归) 277 young ibises, many of which then started to pass the route on to their own young. For now, however, the main worry is getting the birds to follow the aircraft. " While they have a strong bond with their ‘mothers'  and follow them around on the ground, flying is more difficult, " Fritz said.

" Fly Away Home was a huge hit with us biologists, " Mr. Fritz said, recalling the 1996 movie in which a Canada geese was led to migrate by an aircraft. When Mr. Fritz claimed he' d do the same with the ibises, he was initially laughed at. But through years of trial and error, he succeeded. He even learned to fly like a bird, he said, laughing with ease. Mr. Fritz' s two sons, both now teenagers, followed their flying father and the migrating birds on the ground, and his family and colleagues witnessed the risks he was taking. But the unexpected risks are " necessary" , Mr. Fritz said.

" It' s not so much a job, " he added, " but my life' s purpose."

Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存钱罐) onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack. 

" That aroused my curiosity," Jackie told CBS News. " Nobody messes with the piggy bank. " After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings. 

" What are you doing with that money? " Jackie asked her granddaughter. 

" I' m taking it to school," Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. " I' m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn' t get milk—her mom doesn' t have milk money but I do. "

Young inheritor of Shaanxi puppetry has plans to revitalize the ancient cultural tradition, and many others with it, Li Yingxue reports. 

Have you ever experienced one of the earliest precursors (前身) of movies? Only relying  hands, the ancient Chinese art of shadow play (皮影戏) is a tradition with a history  dates back 2, 000 years,  it' s also a representative (代表) of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity  (recognize) by UNESCO. 

Chinese shadow puppetry has its roots in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and  (know) for its good craftsmanship. 

The challenge of  (master) this technique within such a short time seemed like mission impossible.  (fortunate), Nanxiang Buaichifan and Jiuyue were lucky enough  (learn) from the best —Dang Feihua,  23-year-old inheritor (继承人) of the shadow puppetry tradition. Dang is the fifth-generation inheritor of Wang' s Shadow. One of Dang' s  (plan) is to redecorate their shadow puppet themed hotel in Beijing at the end of the year. 

One day recently, Laurie Fenby was 1  at a garage sale in Rochester New York and as she was leaving, she found a 2  on the ground.
