1、 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Maybe you plan to ring in 2024 with a new resolve to lose weight, exercise more, not sweat the small stuff. And maybe these resolutions sound familiar — maybe just like the ones you made a year ago! So how can you ensure that your determination to get healthier in 2024 sticks?
Dream big. Want to compete in a marathon or triathlon? Lose 50 pounds or just enough to fit into clothes you once loved? With perseverance (毅力), encouragement, and support, you can do it. Many will cheer you on. Some will be happy to help in practical ways, such as by training with you or taking on tasks you normally handle in order to free up your time.
Any time you fail to make a change, consider it a step toward your goal. Why? Because each sincere attempt represents a lesson learned. When you hit a snag (碰钉子), take a moment to think about what did and didn' t work. Maybe you took on too big a challenge?
Give thanks for what you do. Set your sights on finishing that marathon, not on running it. If you compete to complete, you' ll be a winner even if you wind up walking as much as you run. With exercise—and so many other goals we set—you' ll benefit even when doing less than you' d like to do. If your goal for Tuesday is a 30-minute workout at the gym, but you only squeeze (挤出) in 10 minutes, feel grateful for that. It' s enough. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
A. Learn from the failures.
B. Avoid repeating past failures.
C. Any activity is always better than none.
D. An ambitious aim often inspires others to help you.
E. Try the following tips to help you create long-lasting change.
F. Having a solid system can help you stay motivated and accountable.
G. If so, change into a less ambitious challenge, or break the big one into tinier steps.

Larry Abrams has always considered himself a bookworm. He loved visiting used bookstores and reading books that others had enjoyed before him. " I certainly like the experience of reading, of going into other worlds, experiencing other cultures, " Abrams said.
Abrams started his teaching career (职业) in a rich area before moving to a high school in the under-resourced community of Lindenwold, New Jersey. " I' d heard of food deserts, but I' d never heard of book deserts. And it occurred to me that I teach in a book desert, " Abrams said. " Many of the kids in school simply struggle with reading. In my ninth-grade class it' s very typical to have kids reading at a fifth-grade reading level. And if you' re struggling with reading, you' re going to be struggling with writing. "
In 2017, Abrams sprang into action. He made a call to his friends and family, asking for gently used children' s books, and in no time, he had more than 1, 000 of them.
He began distributing the books to young moms and local primary schools. That was the start of his nonprofit, BookSmiles. " There are millions of kids in America who have never owned a book in their lives. I want to change that, " Abrams said.
His organization has since collected, sorted and distributed hundreds of thousands of books throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area, and will soon reach 1 million, Abrams says.
BookSmiles encourages the community to help collect books and drop them off in the group' s large collection bins, which are painted with literary-themed artwork and located outside local businesses, schools and people' s homes.
Books are often distributed through teachers, who come to the book bank and select as many books as they want. " It' s a feeding frenzy (热潮) when teachers are able to walk away with books that they take back to their classroom libraries and students, " Abrams said. " It' s like an all-you-can-eat buffet meets a used bookstore. "

According to Jim Coan, a psychologist from the University of Virginia, holding hands with someone you trust can have a positive effect on your health. Why? Researchers have shown in their studies that the simple act of touch can reduce stress and even lower heart rate.
In a study, Jim and his colleagues brought couples into the lab, and then put one of them in an fMRI machine to scan the activity in their brains. While scanning them, the participants looked at a screen, and on a series of tests, they either saw a green circle or a red " X" . A green circle meant that the test would end shortly and nothing else would happen. A red " X" meant that in a few seconds, there was a chance that they would receive a mild electric shock on their leg. The shock wasn' t painful, but it wasn' t exactly comfortable either.
During some of these tests, participants were in the fMRI scanner alone; during others, a researcher came in and held their hand; and on a final set of tests, their romantic partner came in and held their hand. Jim and colleagues found that when participants thought they might be getting a shock, they had a lower stress response in their brains when holding their romantic partner' s hand than in the other two conditions. And the happier the couples said they were in their relationships, the more the romantic partner' s hand lessened (减弱) the brain' s response to the shock. This study suggests that when we' re stressed, holding a loved one' s hand can reduce that stress.
The research also suggests that touch has immediate and positive effects on babies. Skin-to-skin contact can reduce crying, stress, and improve sleep. These effects can be long-lasting: adults, held a lot when they were babies, are the most likely to be healthy and well-adjusted — in fact, the more they were carried in babyhood, the better they adjust in adulthood.
(1)、How would a participant probably feel when seeing a red " X" ?A、Nervous. B、Excited. C、Hopeful. D、Painful.(2)、Why did researchers do sets of tests in the study?A、To make sure the study results are correct. B、To compare brain activities in different cases. C、To test the relationships between couples. D、To check the functions of the fMRI scanner.(3)、According to the last paragraph, what may the writer agree with?A、Babies should be held and carried as much as possible. B、Babies' problems can be solved mainly by touching. C、The effects that touching has on babies don' t last long. D、Adults who were not held as babies can' t adjust to society.(4)、Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text?A、Touch Improves Brain Function B、Touch Happens Everywhere C、Touch Helps Form Good Habits D、Touch Makes a Big Difference -

In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y. —Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff' s granddaughter.
Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden' s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls' decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy' s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism(坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: " When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter. "
(1)、Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?A、To teach in a school. B、To study American history. C、To write a book. D、To do sightseeing.(2)、What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3?A、They enjoyed much respect. B、They had a room with a bathtub. C、They lived with the local kids. D、They suffered severe hardships.(3)、Which part of Wickenden' s writing is hair-raising?A、The extreme climate of Auburn. B、The living conditions in Elkhead. C、The railroad building in the Rockies. D、The natural beauty of the West.(4)、What is the text?A、A news report. B、A book review. C、A children' s story. D、A diary entry. -

What Is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot developed by OpenAI based on GPT=3. 5 (Click to learn more). It has a remarkable ability to interact in a conversational dialogue form and provide responses that can appear surprisingly human. Large language models perform the task of predicting the next word in a series of words.
Is ChatGPT Free To Use?
The use of ChatGPT is currently free during the " research preview" time. The chatbot is currently open for users to try out and provide feedback on the responses so that the AI can become better at answering questions and to learn from its mistakes. However, ChatGPT is envisioned as a tool that the public will eventually have to pay to use.
How Can ChatGPT Be Used?
ChatGPT can write code, poems, songs, and even short stories in the style of a specific author. The expertise in following directions elevates ChatGPT from an information source to a tool that can be asked to accomplish a task. This makes it useful for writing an essay on virtually any topic. ChatGPT can function as a tool for generating outlines for articles or even entire novels. It will provide a response for virtually any task that can be answered with written text.
Limitations
●ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers. Fixing this issue is challenging, as: (1) during RL training, there' s currently no source of truth; (2) training the model to be more cautious causes it to decline questions that it can answer correctly; and (3) supervised training misleads the model because the ideal answer depends on what the model knows, rather than what the human demonstrator knows.
●ChatGPT is sensitive to tweaks (微调) to the input phrasing or attempting the same prompt multiple times. For example, given one phrasing of a question, the model can claim to not know the answer, but given a slight rephrase (重新措辞), it can answer correctly.
●While we' ve made efforts to make the model refuse inappropriate requests, it will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior. We' re using the Moderation API to warn or block certain types of unsafe content, but we expect it to have some false negatives and positives for now. We' re eager to collect user feedback to aid our ongoing work to improve this system.

My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, " The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it. "
