One day, Amanda was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer of an early stage. During this time, she was admitted to a college. She planned to save money to meet the college expense and then seek medical treatment for the cancer.
Her father, Clint and her friends didn't want her to put off her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. A longtime friend of the family was cofounder of a group named Praynksters, known for random acts of kindness. The friend decided to use their own group to help the family. The group came up with the creative idea to spread the word and invite families, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to take part in a donation activity. The event induced the enormous assistance from the local community.
Clint and Amanda were moved as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The event brought the family over $13, 000 in donations to go towards her medical treatments. The generous act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undeserving compared to others who are also struggling. She is still humbled by it all.
After several months of treatment, life for the family has started getting back to their normal routine. Once Amanda got her strength back, she returned to school and completed her bachelor's degree. The family is now inspired to volunteer in their local neighborhood and contribute to crowdfunding (众筹) efforts. How to plan your routes to avoid busy places
Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner, these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run
Strava
Just put in whether you're running or cycling, how far you'd like to go and whether you're keen to avoid hills, the app will then suggest a number of routes near you, based on where other runners have been. It is a good way to see running routes you might not have explored.
Komoot
As you plan the route, it'll work out the distance of your run and give you the option to input your running speed, allowing the app to work out how long the route shall take you.
Map my run
Map my run gives runners the option to plan their own route, or the ability to search through popular running routes near you, which is even more helpful for beginners. The app gives you the option of saving your favourite routes and accessing them on the app if you get lost mid-run.
OS Maps
Another hugely popular map-building platform, OS Maps is pretty high tech when it comes to planning a running route. You'll need a subscription to get some of the features, but using the free app you can find local running routes. There are almost two million routes stored in the routes database, and many of them are free.

For me, growth begins immediately after I am able to accept my mistakes and admit team efforts.
When I was elected president of student union, campus officials congratulated me saying I was quite adequate for the job. Before long, we had built a community of people who liked climbing the mountain near our campus. We started out with a small group of hikers, and then the number of participants increased.
One day on campus, I met a woman in a wheelchair called Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn' t and she would never. I told her to stay positive and not to give up admiring the beauty of the summit. Grace agreed to have a go. We all took turns grabbing a corner of her chair as we carried her 1. 7 miles to the top. This was probably one of the most magical and deeply meaningful things I did in college.
With the support of my community and hikers, no one was surprised that I had won the election. The first thing I did as president was hang a sign outside the Associated Students office that read, " Under New Management!" I was proud of my coming accomplishment.
Absolute power changed me absolutely. My ego, my arrogance and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to people, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. Seldom did I join the hikers to climb the mountain, arguing it was a waste of time. My friends and supporters tried to communicate to me that I had changed, that I was abusing my position, but I wasn' t listening.
A public conflict with the female vice president about where to build a coffeehouse opened the floodgates for others who were upset with me. They claimed that I had made wrong decisions and that I was unqualified for the job. " Resign! Resign!" the posters of their requests would soon be everywhere on campus. My whole world collapsed. I couldn' t figure out why a wonderfully enriching experience as president suddenly turned into one of my worst nightmares.

In our fast-paced world, where speed and instant results often steal the spotlight, there' s a quiet but great virtue that often goes unnoticed—the courage to go slow. It may sound abnormal, but instead of rushing to implement (实施), we need to slow down. This is particularly relevant when we start the journey of developing instructional strategies.
Start, add and abandon habits. Understand that habit formation takes time and requires testing, reflecting, and adapting. Set systems that focus you and your team and organization on the implementation and impact on a few key practices.
Push consistency over intensity. Focus on maintaining consistent effort rather than pushing for rapid, unsustainable changes. This occurs because the lasting habits that are selected are implemented every day and reflected upon routinely.
Celebrate each little victory along the way. These moments of success, no matter how minor, are the building blocks of lasting change.
Seek support. Surround yourself with individuals who support your journey and value the importance of patience. Lean on their encouragement during challenging times.
Admittedly, it takes courage to welcome the wisdom of going slow in this competitive world. Taking it slow with patience enables individuals to travel along this journey with determination, as can be illustrated by the well-known story of the tortoise and the hare.
A. Ask for suggestions.
B. Applaud small wins.
C. It' s the slow and steady progress that leads to lasting habits.
D. As we slow down, patience becomes our greatest companion.
E. Protect these few practices by giving up other unsuitable ones.
F. However, is it right for us common people to do so in such a way?
G. The question then is, how do we go slow and develop and sustain a new habit?

8、 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。
Could you manage without the internet for four and a half years? That' s exactly what the actress Selena Gomez has done in a bid to improve her mental health.
She has spoken extensively about the relationship between her social media usage and mental well-being, recalling feeling like " an addict" as to becoming Instagram' s most followed user in 2016. " Indeed, I regret quitting from social media that late" , says she. " The unnecessary hate and comparisons went away once I put my phone down. "
However, the increasing digitization (数字化) means that everything from paying a bill to even making a phone call is at the mercy of the internet. Actively opting (选择) out of the internet becomes a matter of privilege. Ms Gomez' s multi-millionaire status has allowed her to take the " social" out of social media. The fact that she' s still the second most-followed woman on Instagram suggests it' s entirely possible to maintain a significant web profile to promote various projects by way of a dedicated team — without being exposed to the cruel comments.
It goes without saying that this is fundamentally different from how the rest of us without beauty deals and films to publicize use the likes of Instagram and Twitter, but even the concept of a digital detox (戒瘾) requires having a device and connectivity to choose to disconnect from.
The UK' s digital divide has worsened over the past two years, leaving poorer families without broadband connections in their homes. Digital exclusion (数字隔绝) is a major threat to wider societal equality in the UK.
Consequently, it' s worth bearing in mind that while deleting all social media accounts will undoubtedly make some feel infinitely better, many other people benefit from the strong sense of community that sharing platforms can develop. Greater resources and initiatives are needed to provide the underprivileged with the connectivity they desperately need to learn, work and live. It' s crucial that people feeling social media is harmful to their mental health are allowed to switch off and for those living in digital exclusion to be able to switch on primarily.
(1)、What do we learn about the actress Selena Gomez in the past four and a half years?A、She has withdrawn from social media. B、She has won Instagram' s most followers. C、She has had worsening mental problems. D、She has succeeded in a bid on the internet.(2)、Why does actively opting out of using the internet become a matter of privilege?A、Most people think that digital exclusion promotes societal equality in the UK. B、Most people can hardly abandon the web while avoiding hate and comparisons. C、Most people can hardly get by without the internet due to growing digitization. D、Most people have been seriously addicted to the web without being aware of it.(3)、What is stressed concerning social media platforms in the last paragraph?A、They are beneficial to people' s mental health. B、They create a virtual community on the internet. C、They help many people feel connected with others. D、They provide a necessary device for a digital detox.(4)、What is the author' s attitude towards social media platforms?A、Subjective. B、Objective. C、Disapproving. D、Favorable. -

New York University (NYU) surgeons have performed the world' s first transplant of an entire human eye, an extraordinary addition to a face transplant, although it' s far too soon to know if the man will ever see through his new left eye.
An accident had destroyed most of Aaron James' face and one eye. His right eye still works. But the surgeons hoped replacing the missing one would produce better cosmetic (整容的) results for his new face. The NYU team is doing just that. James is recovering well from the dual (双重的) transplant last May and the donated eye looks remarkably healthy.
Today, transplants of the cornea (眼角膜) are common to treat certain types of vision loss. But transplanting the whole eye—the eyeball, its blood supply, and the critical optic nerve (视神经) that must connect it to the brain—is considered a moonshot in the search to cure blindness.
Whatever will happen next, James' surgery offers scientists a window into how the human eye tries to heal. " We' re not claiming that we are going to restore sight," said Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, who led the transplant. " But there' s no doubt that we are one step closer. "
Some specialists had feared the eye would quickly become dry and wrinkled. However, when Rodriguez opened James' left eyelid, the donated eye was fat and full of liquid. Doctors see good blood flow and no sign of rejection.
Now researchers have begun analyzing scans of James' brain that detected some puzzling signals from that all-important but injured optic nerve. Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg, who has long studied how to make eye transplants a reality, called the surgery exciting. " It' s an amazing confirmation of animal experiments that have kept transplanted eyes alive," he said. " The difficulty now is how to regrow the optic nerve, although animal studies are making progress. " He praised the NYU team' s " boldness" in even aiming for optic nerve repair and hopes the transplant will promote more research.
(1)、What can be learnt from the first two paragraphs?A、James is fully content with the surgery result. B、The surgery to replace James' missing eye is underway. C、James can see through his transplanted eye pretty soon. D、The surgeons have transplanted the face and an eye to James.(2)、What does the underlined word " moonshot" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、A task impossible to complete. B、A fantasy existing in the virtual world. C、A project extremely tough to accomplish. D、A mission probable to be complete without effort.(3)、What challenge are the researchers facing now?A、How to obtain better cosmetic results. B、How to make further progress in animal studies. C、How to stop the transplanted eye from being infected. D、How to grow the optic nerve of the transplanted eye again.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、James Received Transplanted Eye Perfectly B、NYU Doctors Perform World' s First Eye Transplant C、Various Methods to Treat Different Types of Vision LossD Advances Made in Eye Transplant and Optic Nerve Repair

In 2016, when I was on the graduate scheme (计划) at Deutsche Bank, Marie Inafidon, chief executive of Stemettes, who encourages girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), was also working there. I didn' t meet her at the time, but I did read an article about her and her career.
Learning at 21 years old about the career of a young black woman' s succeeding in a traditionally white male-dominated industry was one of the most influential things that ever happened to me. It gave me confidence that it was possible to do well in the office and work on personal external project at the same time.
Role models can play a central role in shaping a young professional' s career. They are especially important if you belong to an under-represented group for whom a lack of representation in the workplace can lead to feeling isolated and lacking in confidence. They can help those just starting out, whether or not they are a graduate as I was, to believe in their own abilities.
There' s a growing need to have accessible role models. Given the tendency to exaggerate (夸大) success stories, hearing from women who talk honestly about the challenges they have faced, either when starting a business or forming a new career path, is much more effective. A study revealed that 70 per cent of girls say they think differently about their futures after hearing from women role models.
I' m frequently asked about what businesses could be doing to increase racial diversity in the workplace. A good starting point is to actively promote and support the voices of the people in the organisation that are leading positive change and inspiring others. This makes a real difference. Unlike the tokenism (装样子) I still come across, which results in individuals being made the lone representative for a group without real support from the organisation.
Things came full circle for me when I interviewed Ms. Inafidon for my book in 2019. I was able to tell her of the incredible impact her passion and confidence had had on me as a graduate trainee and how grateful I would always be for that.
(1)、What do we learn about Marie Inafidon?A、She became successful at 21. B、She was a trainee at Deutsche Bank. C、She encouraged girls to take up STEM-related work. D、She helped the author with her external project personally.(2)、Who can benefit most from role models in the work place according to the third paragraph?A、Experienced professionals. B、A graduate eager to succeed. C、People without special abilities. D、The young from an under-represented group.(3)、What is effective in changing girls' mindset?A、Taking on challenging projects. B、Reading more made-up success stories. C、Starting their own business as early as possible. D、Listening to women role models share their experiences.(4)、What should businesses do to increase racial diversity in the workplace according to the author?A、Encourage positive opinions. B、Make more colored people authorities. C、Include more people of different races. D、Understand the true meaning of tokenism. -

Never in my wildest imagination did I picture myself standing on the back of a running horse. I' m not a cowgirl and don' t even ride horses for pleasure. But I was doing a television fitness show, and someone in the group had the bright idea that we should go to the rodeo (牛仔竞技表演) grounds and ask the trick riders if they could teach me a stunt (特技表演) to do on camera. We could use this short video as the new opening to the show. I agreed the stunt would be eye-catching and prove how flexible a fit person can be.
That was how I ended up at the rodeo grounds with a camera group, watching the remarkable performances of three talented young cowgirls. Once their show was over, we approached them, detailing our ideas for the television show.
The cowgirls asked me which particular stunt I was interested in learning. I especially liked one stunt—one of the girls led a horse to continuously and slowly run around the grounds while one of the other girls ran across the grounds toward a small trampoline (蹦床). It was timed perfectly so that she jumped onto the trampoline, up into the air, and then onto the horse' s back. As she landed on its back, she stood up and stretched her arms outward as the horse continued slowly running. It looked impressive. They talked me through the necessary moves, stressing the timing since I would need to be in the air at the correct time when the horse ran past. I would judge the speed of the horse and my own speed to jump onto the horse on time.
It was clearly challenging. I was a little hesitant, afraid of being unable to do that well and slowing down the filming. But I knew the most important thing for me was to concentrate on the task at hand.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Imagine that you need milk, so you go to the grocery store to pick some up. When you get to the dairy section, there are so many choices that you are dumbfounded (目瞪口呆).
This phenomenon is known as the paradox of choice and it is becoming a concern in the modern world, where more and more options are becoming easily available to us. The paradox of choice stipulates (规定) that while we might believe that being presented with multiple options actually makes it easier to choose one that we are happy with, and thus increases consumer satisfaction, having an abundance of options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice. When the number of choices increases, so does the difficulty of knowing what is best. Instead of increasing our freedom to have what we want, the paradox of choice suggests that having too many choices actually limits our freedom.
American psychologist Barry Schwartz published The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, in 2004. He identified that the range of choices available these days is far greater nowadays; he found that instead of increasing decision satisfaction, having too many options made people less likely to be satisfied with the decision they had made. While freedom is important, Schwartz explains that there is a fine line between having the freedom to choose and being paralyzed (麻痹的) in the face of too many options.
While many studies have demonstrated the more options are available, the less satisfied with the decisions people make, the paradox of choice has been criticized for not having enough concrete and scientific evidence behind it and critics often offer countering evidence, such as the fact that Starbucks, which boasts a menu with hundreds of possibilities and customizations, is an incredibly popular and profitable company.
Barry Schwartz acknowledges that these controversial findings are likely apparent. He suggests that if all the studies based on the ways that options impact choice are combined, we will likely find that sometimes more options leads to increased satisfaction, sometimes it leads to diminished satisfaction.

Around one in ten children in the UK have dyslexia (阅读障碍) which often causes reading difficulties. Reading requires the process of matching what we see on a page with spoken language and meaning. So reading difficulties could at least in part be caused by differences in how the brain makes sense of what we see.
In our recent study, children were presented with patterns of moving dots (圆点) in child-friendly games and asked to work out their overall direction. They had to press a button to say whether the dots were going " left" or " right" . We also studied children' s brain activity. Then we measured how correct the children were and how long they took to make their responses.
The results have shown that children with and without dyslexia didn' t seem to differ in how they first processed visual information, but instead differed in how they made decisions about it. Children with dyslexia seemed to see the moving dots just as easily as children without dyslexia, but took longer to decide in which direction they were moving. And when children made decisions on the direction of dot movement, brain activity in children with dyslexia increased more slowly.
Although words don' t move, differences in these motion (运动) tasks could influence children' s ability to read. That' s because the sounds that make up language change quickly over time—just like moving dots—so they depend on the brain processes that can discern these changes. If children with dyslexia are slower to make decisions about the direction of dot movement, they may also find it more difficult to tell apart sounds in spoken words. In turn, this could make reading more difficult as it is so dependent on spoken language and meaning.
The study is helping us to build a better picture of how the brain develops differently in children with dyslexia. Our findings prove that dyslexia could influence more than just a child' s reading ability. It is important that we all bear this in mind when supporting children with dyslexia.
(1)、What were the children asked to do in the study?A、To mark the right words with dots. B、To memorize the motion path of each dot. C、To figure out the general direction of moving dots. D、To pick out the dot moving in the required direction.(2)、In which part did children mainly differ according to the study?A、The number of dots they could see. B、Their knowledge of spoken language. C、The time they used to remember game rules. D、Their speed of response to the motion direction of objects.(3)、What does the underlined word " discern" in Paragraph 4 mean?A、Produce. B、Recognize. C、Remove. D、Control.(4)、What does the author think of the study?A、It brings benefits. B、It needs improving. C、It influences the children' s ability. D、It supports the children with dyslexia. -

John Todd is crazy about skiing and about having the right stuff (有必备的品质) to do it. As a boy in Finland, he would be down in the dumps when the first spring rains came to melt the freeze. He is now the world' s leading snow advisor. His business range includes ski resorts, indoor snow playgrounds and the biggest snow event of all: the Winter Olympics.
" When I was growing up, the winter arrived in mid-October and it would stay cold until May," the 64-year-old told CNN. " But around 2000, things began to change. " At 25, Todd began to coach the Finnish alpine (高山) ski team, but he quit two years later. As snow conditions worsened around the world, he decided to talk with physicists and geographers to learn about snow. " If you love snow," Todd said, " it is natural to want to organize snow. "
For those in the business of skiing, snow is not a natural phenomenon so much as a product. The sport accounts for over half of all Winter Olympic events, yet the average February temperature of host cities has risen from 0. 4℃ in the 1920—1950s, to 6. 3℃ in the 21st century. That is why every Winter Olympics since Lake Placid in 1980 has relied on artificial snow.
Snow can be made in machines that take water, mix it with compressed air and turn it into a mist of tiny drops that freeze. But they only work below certain temperatures. Todd has pioneered a technique of " recycling" snow by harvesting it and storing it. Before the Sochi games in Russia in 2014, he stored nearly 1m cubic meters of it.
For Milan, the host of the 2026 Winter Olympics, Todd recommended that the organizers combine snowmaking with snow recycling which uses much less water. " I hope the idea of storing snow will become their priority," Todd said.
(1)、What can we learn about Todd from the first two paragraphs?A、He expected spring every year. B、He built many ski resorts. C、He longed to attend Olympics. D、He was fond of snow very much.(2)、Why did Todd leave the Finnish alpine ski team?A、To move to colder areas. B、To train more famous teams. C、To know more about snow. D、To improve his skiing skills.(3)、Why did every Winter Olympics after 1980 turn to artificial snow?A、It is easy to carry and keep. B、It is accessible to all games. C、Global warming is melting the snow. D、Environmental awareness is rooted in people' s minds.(4)、Compared with artificial snow, what is the advantage of Todd' s snow?A、It is low-cost. B、It is resource-saving. C、It is long-lived. D、It is time-consuming. -
