All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley's memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term "art appreciation". During 8-12 hour shifts spent among the galleries, he takes advantage of the gift of time to study the masterpieces he's been hired to protect and to think about the role of art throughout history.

Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley's "guard's-eye view" is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom's death from cancer in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which "I was happy to be going nowhere". He explains, "I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn't wish to move at all." Bringley doesn't say when he decided to channel his experience of finding peace into art, but this story about jumping off the career ladder in order to find the space for quiet reflection is surprisingly suited to our times.

All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen facts about the museum to support Bringley's personal tale. As interesting as these facts are, it's Bringley's reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. Discussing Alfred Stieglitz's photographs of his wife, he writes, "I think that sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that." In a Vermeer port rait of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist caught "that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness (神圣) of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom's hospital room".

As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not about art, but from it. This is art appreciation at a high level.

Have you ever been really hungry, but there wasn't much to eat in your kitchen? Did you throw together a bunch of stuff you had on hand and were pleasantly surprised when it tasted good? You aren't alone. Some of our favorite foods were created by accident. Here's a sample menu of some familiar foods that would never have happened if someone hadn't created them by mistake.

    POTATO CHIPS

One of the world's favorite snacks is the result of a complaint. In 1853, a man was eating dinner at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. He ordered fried potatoes, a popular side dish. But when they came out of the kitchen, he didn't think they were crispy enough. He sent them back to the kitchen, where Chef George Crum was so angry at having his cooking criticized that he sliced the potatoes really thin, put lots of salt on them, and fried them. Not only did the diner love them, but everyone else did, too. They soon became a specialty of the restaurant.

    TOFU

Tofu, or bean curd, is made by curdling (使凝结) fresh soya milk, pressing it into a solid block, and then cooling it. Tofu was accidentally invented in China 2,000 years ago, when a cook added seaweed to soya milk, which made it curdle. This is the same process that is used for making cheese. Like cheese, tofu is a great example of how really messing up a recipe can create something unexpectedly good.

    CHEESE PUFFS

Did you ever wonder who thought up cheese puffs? The company that invented them wasn't even trying to make food for people. It was trying to make animal feed. In the 1930s, the Flakall Company of Wisconsin made animal food from small, flaked pieces of grain. One day, an employee, Edward Wilson, watched workers pouring cornmeal (谷粉) into the flaking machine, wetting it to keep it from clogging (堵塞). Because the machine was very hot, the wet cornmeal came out of it in puffy ribbons that hardened when they hit the air. Wilson took some of the ribbons home, added oil and flavoring to them, and voila! Cheese puffs!

(1)、Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A、Seaweed is also used for making cheese. B、Chef George Crum didn't like to criticize others' cooking. C、Cold wet cornmeal hardened when they hit the air. D、Bean curd dates back 2000 years in China .
(2)、What do the three foods have in common?
A、They are the results of complaints. B、They were not created on purpose. C、They weren't originally made for people. D、They are all popular throughout the world.
(3)、What's the purpose of the text?
A、To compare the features of some foods. B、To inform readers of some foods. C、To recommend some foods . D、To introduce the origins of some foods.

On a Saturday afternoon, my friend's eleven-year-old daughter Jenny and I wound our way through the crowd at the State Fair of Texas. Her dad, along with my husband, followed behind. Seconds later, we arrived at the section of the fair that I dreaded (畏惧) more than searching for a place to park: the midway rides. As the loudspeakers shouted "I Will Survive", potential victims passed us like a tornado.

Jenny looked up at the windsurf ride with her eyes wide open. I was confident that she, like my children when they were her age, would bypass the twisting, terrifying, multi-story mechanical arms and continue walking elsewhere.

    I was wrong.

"Will you go on this ride with me? "she asked.

"Um, sure, "I answered while glancing up at the people who were suspended upside down.

"How bad could it be? "I asked.

"Not bad if rides don't make you sick, "Jenny said.

I could have made up an excuse for not to risk my life. Or I could have admitted my possibility of motion sickness. But, earlier that morning, I had challenged myself to try something new each week. I was ready to push myself out of my comfort zone. Jenny stared at the ride, eager to experience the same thrill as the brave group of riders in front of us, I couldn't say no.

We bought two tickets. After climbing into our seats, an attendant reached up, pulled down the bar, and locked it in place .The ride lifted us slowly and then turned us over like the blueberry pancakes. Staring at the ground directly below us, I wondered why I had decided to wear flip-flops (人字拖) . I wondered when my new health insurance would kick in. My stomach upset. The ride touched down finally. Her dad and my husband were waiting for us at the exit. "How was it? "they asked.

"Fine. No big deal, "I said, even though my head was dizzy. Jenny walked ahead of us and convinced me to keep taking chances and sample more rides.

Steller or Northern Sea Lions are sometimes confused with California Sea Lions but are much larger and lighter in color. Males may grow to 11 feet in length and weigh almost 2,500 pounds.  Steller Sea Lions are light brown to reddish-brown in color. They have a boxy, bear-like head and a very thick neck.

Stellers are not often seen in bays or rivers. Steller pups are born on offshore islands from mid-May to mid-July and weigh 35—50 pounds.  Then they spend roughly equal amounts of time hunting and nursing pups on land. Pups usually nurse for a year, but some in Alaska continue to nurse for up to three years. During the breeding season, males do not leave their territories.

They hunt schooling fish, squid, rockfish, and occasionally salmon. In turn, they are hunted by killer whales, white sharks, and sea elephants.

The current population of Steller Sea Lions is about 40,000 along the entire Pacific coast. There is great concern about this species. The western Aleutian stock has dropped by 80 percent in the last 30 years. In 1997, the western stock in Alaska was listed as endangered.  However, researchers believe possibilities include a decline in specific species of fish they eat, competition with commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Alaska, and possible hunting by killer whales. Drowning, being caught in nets, and gunshots are other reasons for the Stellers' decline. Stellers are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

    A. Steller Sea Lions cat a variety of fishes.
    B. Reasons for this decline are not known.
    C. The male has a thick neck and looks like a lion.
    D. They spend about half their time on land and half in water.
    E. Mothers stay with pups for one to two weeks before hunting at sea.
    F. They forbid the killing, harming or disturbance of any sea mammal.

Time is running short to address climate change, but there are possible and effective solutions on the table, according to a new UN climate report released in March.

Only swift, dramatic, and sustained emission (排放) cuts will be enough to meet the world's climate goals, according to the new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) , a body of climate experts that regularly summarize the state of this issue.

"We are walking when we should be running fast, "said Hoesung Lee, IPCC chair, in a press conference announcing the report in March. To limit warming to 1.5℃ above preindustrial levels, the target set by international climate agreements, annual greenhouse-gas emission will need to be cut by nearly half between now and 2030, according to the report. It calculates that the results from actions taken now will be clear in global temperature trends within two decades

"We already have the technology and the know-how to get the job done, "said Inger Andersen, executive director of UN Environment Programme, during the press conference. "Stopping climate change will still be complicated, and long-term emission cuts may largely rely on technologies, like carbon dioxide removal, that are still unproven at scale. In addition to technological advances, cutting emission in industries that are difficult to transform will involve many factors. "

But in the near term, there's a clear path forward for the emission cuts needed to put the planet on the right track. There are some of the tasks with the lowest cost and highest potential to address climate change during this decade, such as developing wind and solar power, cutting methane (甲烷) emission from fossil-fuel production and waste, protecting natural ecosystems that trap carbon, and using energy efficiently in vehicles, homes, and industries.

(1)、What is the author's attitude towards tackling climate change?
    A、Positive. B、Worried. C、Skeptical. D、Uncertain.
    (2)、What does Hoesung Lee mean?
A、It's impossible to achieve the climate goal. B、He knows how to cut emission efficiently. C、The pace of global warming is speeding up. D、He is dissatisfied with current emission cuts.
(3)、What is the guarantee of long-term emission reduction according to Inger Andersen?
    A、Policy. B、Market. C、Funding. D、Technology.
(4)、What message does this text mainly convey?

    A.Emission cutting is urgent.

    B.Climate change is unstoppable.

    C.Global warming is becoming complicated.

    D.Meeting climate goals needs cooperation.

On November 8th, a tornado, the most powerful in the past 70 years, hit Jersey, causing great damages to the area and leaving the residents in great panic.

"Suddenly, the windows of the waiting room exploded in and dragged everything inside. My cars have been completely destroyed by branches and fences, and my garden is completely gone. There's no furniture, no fence; everything has been thrown everywhere. At first there was lightning but then a strange noise and strange darkness came over the whole house. It was like being in a scary scene in the movie The Wizard of Oz." Ashleigh Quail-Charleston, a Jersey resident, told the Bailiwick Express after the tornado that struck overnight on November 1-2 during Storm Ciaran.

The consequence looked like a bomb had gone off: cars hit, roofs with holes, windows broken. "A huge tree leans drunkenly against a block of flats. Piles of branches are piled optionally and pavements are covered with pieces," said Chris Stone at BBC Radio Jersey. The tornado was powerful and exceptionally rare, caused by a severe thunderstorm that had sent out intense lightning and huge hailstones described as "ice bombs". The Tornado and Storm Research Organization (Torro) and Jersey Met Office revealed the tornado left a trail of damages 8 km long across the island, and rated its intensity as T6 on an international scale of tornado power.

According to Torro records, this was the most powerful tornado to strike anywhere in the British Isles or Channel Islands since December 7th, 1954 when a tornado struck west London, leaving tremendous devastation, with Gunnersbury railway station torn apart, roofs torn off houses and one car even thrown through the air.

Tornados during Storm Ciaran also hit Sompting in West Sussex and Loders in Dorset. One resident in Loders, Sophie van Hensbergen, described the moment, saying, "The tornado struck with a very, very powerful whistling sound and the windows looked as though we were in a car wash."

I began to do a lot of soul searching. My burnout had set me on a completely different path. Around this time, my approach to my health was also shifting. So many women hit 50 thinking that's it and they're done, but for me it felt like a new beginning.

I wrote and self-published a book called Journey to Chocolate about my seeking for a more balanced and satisfying life. I started eating "clean" with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding processed food and not drinking alcohol from Monday to Thursday. The changes to my diet made me feel more energetic and alert. I slept better, and managing my weight was much easier.

The wind howled (呼啸) with the terrible storm at night. The stars were stuck to the black sheet of the sky. The next morning, when I woke up, the winter's icy wind caused me to shake

My friends and I agreed to take up the skiing contest. I took a seat near the heater, warming my hand and trying to calm myself before the skiing contest. I was encouraging myself by shouting, "I can win this contest. "As soon as I reached the white mountain top, I began wearing my safety guards for the climb down. We rhythmically recited "Ready-set-go" and the race began. At every moment my speed started to increase. Finally, winning was only one step away. As a wise man had once said, "With a determined heart, a mouse can also lift an elephant. So willpower and courage can help conquer (战胜) a hard task. " My hope helped me to conquer this challenging race. I was on top of the world by winning the skiing contest. Skiing has now become my hobby.

The next morning, it was snowing heavily. Watching this wonderful sight along with tasting the delicious hot chocolate, we friends were planning to go for an overnight climb to the top of the mountain. We came out of the hotel room and stepped into the deep snow which buried half our legs into the soft snowy ground. The best moment till now was looking up at the grand mountain. Also the view was clear. I was eager to start my climb. We climbed towards the top and all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell from the mountain. Fortunately I did not end up giving up my life but got a severe fracture (骨折) on my leg.

All relationships require work, though it may not always feel like work. Professional relationships require work too. Here are some tips to improve your relationships and get along better with others in both your personal and your professional lives.

Listen to others. The most important skill in communication is the ability to listen to others. Rather than doing all the talking, take time to stop and hear what others have to say.

Be polite and positive. When you are the one speaking, do it in a way that considers others' feelings and leaves a positive impact. Think about what you want to say before you say it. If you're responding to someone, say something positive if you agree and offer an encouraging word. Doing this early in your relationship sets a healthy example for future interactions.

Be honest and sincere. Another communication skill is to make sure you speak with honesty and sincerity. When we trust people, we know that "they say what they mean, and they mean what they say. "

Listen with respect for other people's experiences. Look for chances to listen to them, even if you disagree with what they are saying. Be open to changing your mind or understanding things in a different way. You may also want to ask for and receive feedback on your own business. A different view provides you with the chance to grow and learn.

    A. Keep an open mind.

    B. Look for common ground.

    C. Avoid interrupting other people.

    D. Ask questions that help you understand them more deeply.

    E. Don't be afraid to apologize if you say something unintended.

    F. You will build relationships with others when you tell them the truth.

    G. That could mean calling a friend, or getting together with your family for the holidays.

Russia is launching a new module (舱) for the International Space Station(ISS), after more than a decade of delays. The Nauka module is set to lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on top of a Proton-M rocket at around 15:00 GMT today, along with a new robotic arm for the station created by the European Space Agency.

The ISS is composed of modules and equipment from different space agencies including Europe, Japan and Canada, but the major part of the station is composed of two main sections, a Russian part and a US part. At 13 meters long and weighing more than 20 tonnes, Nauka, also called the Multipurpose Laboratory Module, will be among the largest in Russia's half.

After launch, Nauka will take eight days to reach the ISS. Once attached, it will act as a new centre for the Russian part of the station. "It's a science laboratory, and it also provides a lot of important service systems," says Anatoly Zak, editor of a website. Planned research includes biological and materials science experiments. "It's a step in making the Russian part more independent (from the US part)." This includes a new toilet inside the module and sleeping rooms for the crew.

The launch of Nauka has been a long time coming, with construction of the module beginning in the 1990s. Technical and supply issues since then, such as the loss of components from Ukraine following the Russian annexation (兼并) of Crimea in 2014, have seen development stumble (蹒跚而行). "It's much more complex than anything the Russian space programme has tried to build in the last few years," says Zak. Russia's last module — Rassvet — was carried to the ISS by a US spacecraft in 2010.

(1)、What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A、The size of the ISS. B、The major part of the ISS. C、The formation of the ISS. D、Some information about Nauka.
(2)、What can we say about Nauka?
A、It will rely on the US section. B、It is a comprehensive module. C、It serves as a supporting module. D、It will make the Russian part dependent.
(3)、Which of the following best describes Nauka?
    A、Eventful. B、Pleasant. C、Dangerous. D、Costly.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、Ways of space exploration. B、Meaning of Nauka to ISS. C、Great functions of a launch. D、Launch of a new module.
