"Regrets are often painful. A study suggests that some people can overcome them," said Jiawei Zhang, a psychology graduate at the University of California. "But this isn't the case for everyone, " he said.
The researchers wondered why some people report feeling improvement from regrets but others don't. Does it lie in how people approach their regrets?
In the study, the researchers focused on self-compassion(自我同情) as a potential factor in why some people have an easier time leaving their regrets behind them.
400 people attended an experiment. First, they were asked to write about their biggest regret. Half wrote something they did but wish they hadn't done; the other half wrote something they didn't do but wish they had. Then, the participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: self-compassion,self-esteem and a control group. The self-esteem group was asked to respond by "talking to yourself about this regret from the aspect of confirming your positive qualities".
The control group was asked to write about their favorite hobby rather than their regret. Then, they were asked about their feelings of forgiveness, acceptance and personal improvement following the exercise.
They found that the self-compassion group reported greater feelings of acceptance, forgiveness and personal improvement, compared with the control group and the self-esteem group. In other words, focusing on your best qualities is not what helps you feel better about a regret. Rather, being compassionate toward yourself is what may make a difference, the researchers found.
It's possible that people who practice self-compassion are able to confront their regrets and see what went wrong, so they can make a better choice in the future, Zhang told Live Science. Self-compassion pushes people to accept their regret instead of running away from it.
The researchers used an example of this from a previous study on breast cancer patients who were asked to try thinking about their treatment in a positive light before it began. The women who did so reported greater feelings of personal growth later on.

B、To see if they have weaknesses. C、To see if they have self-compassion. Wildlife populations around the world are facing dramatic declines, according to new figures that have led environmental campaigners to call for urgent action to rescue the natural world. The 2022 Living Planet Index(LPI), produced by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), reveals that studied populations of mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline of 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previous predictions. The LPI tracked global biodiversity between 1970 and 2018, based on the monitoring of 31,821 populations of 5230 vertebrate (脊椎动物) species. Mark Wright of WWF says the degree of decline is destructive and continues to worsen. "We are not seeing any really positive signs that we are beginning to bend the curve of nature," he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been among the hardest-hit populations, with monitored populations showing an average decline of 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazon pink river dolphin, for example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its population between 1994 and 2016. Habitat loss and reduction is the largest driver of wildlife loss in all regions around the world.
In December, governments from around the world will gather in Montreal, Canada, for the COP15 Biodiversity Framework to agree on a set of new targets intended to prevent the loss of animals, plants and habitats globally by 2030. Robin, Freeman of ZSL, says "We need governments to take action to ensure that those goals deal with the complicated combined threats of climate change and biodiversity" says Freeman. But some researchers are critical of the LPI's use of a headline figure of decline, warning it is easy to be misunderstood.
The findings don't mean all species or populations worldwide are in decline. In fact, roughly half the populations show a stable or increasing trend, and half show a declining trend. "I think a more appropriate and useful way to look at it is to focus on specific species or populations," says Hannah Ritchie. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tool that reflects the findings of other biodiversity indicators. "All of those show they all scream there is something going really very badly wrong," says Wright.
(1)、What does Mark Wright mean in the first paragraph?A、It is no use trying to change nature. B、The benefits of nature are underestimated. C、It takes more to preserve the diversity of nature. B、To show some of the world's wild animals are in decline. C、To show there are no positive measures to protect nature. D、To show freshwater vertebrates are at risk of extinction.(3)、What can we learn about people's response to the issue mentioned in the passage?A、It makes sense to focus on a particular species. B、Preventing the loss of habitats by 2030 is certain to happen. C、New agreement on the prevention of habitat loss will be in vain. D、The Caribbean wildlife has been well protected in recent decades.(4)、Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A、The COP15 Biodiversity Framework. B、Urgent Action to Save the Earth. C、Wildlife Population Declining Sharply. D、Correct Explanation of LPI. -

Recently, my college degree has just been completed. The last project was called "Smile". The class was asked to go out to smile at three people and write down their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake.
My husband, the youngest son and I went out to McDonald's. We were standing in line when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away. As I turned around, an unpleasant body smell came to my nose and two poor homeless men stood just behind me. As I looked at the short blue-eyed gentleman closest to me, he was "smiling". The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, "Coffee is all, Miss," because that was all they could afford.
Then I really felt it—I embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked two more breakfast meals and gave them to the men.
The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Thank you."
I turned in my project. My teacher asked, "Can I share this?" I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need to make people happy and to be made happy.
In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's and every soul that heard the story in the classroom. But, I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn.

I stared at myself in the mirror: blue tights, yellow vest, an aquamarine fish tail trailing behind me, and large googly eyes (sitting atop my head. I raised my eyebrows quizzically at my mom with uncertainty about this costume. Mom ensured that she followed the pattern exactly. "Maybe the makeup will add something," Mom said hopefully. I sighed and looked back at the mirror. Somehow Mom had convinced me to do a play this summer. So here I was about to play the Fish Footman (鱼仆人) in the local community theater production of Alice in Wonderland. I can't say it's been the time of my life. Actually, I even wanted to withdraw from the play.
"Well, there's no turning back now," she said. "You've been rehearsing (彩排) for two months. I couldn't be prouder-of you." She gave me an encouraging anile, pulling me in for a fierce hug. I had to admit: Mom's hugs are the best. But despite that, I felt u knot in the pit of my stomach that got worse as the hour of opening night drew nearer.
That day I followed Mom to the backstage of the theater, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup table. When my makeup artist had set down her last makeup brush and Mom led me over to a mirror, my jaw dropped. A mass of blue spread from my forehead down my nose, and lime green circles bubbled over my cheeks.
"Mom! I can't go out on stage like this!" I cried. "I'd be a laughing stock!"
"Riley! This is Alice in Wonderland. You're not the only one in an odd costume. I'm going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. She turned away to leave, but then leaned down and kissed me on the forehead." I love you, honey. And she went away.
Tears filled my eyes as chaos closed in around me. It felt like I stood there alone for hours, but in reality it was more like ten minutes before the assistant stage manager came in and called my name.

Almost everyone has felt something similar: wearing clothes we don't like causes a general feeling of unease and discontent. This proves the fact that clothes have more than functions of protection or warmth in life. As former fashion editor Caryn Franklin writes, "Fashion offers a dialogue rich with social and political meaning for those who want to unlock the language of clothes."
We like or dislike certain colors because of the attributes or moods we associate with them. Those associations might be cultural. White, for example, is commonly associated with purity and innocence in Western cultures, whereas in China, people associate it with death and mourning.
The book The Little Prince offers a fictional example of the latter: The fox will love the sight of wheat, which had been meaningless to him, just because it will remind him of the color of the boy's hair.
As a result, associations can differ widely from person to person and culture to culture. Others might read into our outfits something different than we intend. But as long as we are not wearing our clothes specifically to communicate certain qualities to others in a specific context (such as professionalism at a job interview), what others think of our clothes should be less important than what we think of them and why we choose to wear them.
A. Take colors, for instance.
B. We ought to dress to benefit ourselves, not others.
C. They also communicate something about the wearer.
D. Thus, they will misunderstand our values and identity.
E. Clothes have the psychological power to elevate our sense of self.
F. Or we can form associations based on our personal experience and values.
G. We might also associate certain fabrics with different qualities of character.

20、阅读理解
The year is 1763, and a 7-year-old Mozart is about to set off on a tour around Europe that will jump-start the Mozart legend. Mozart had a trick up his sleeve. When the young Mozart heard a note played-any note-he could immediately identify exactly which note it was. It was an ability now we know as "perfect pitch", and it seemed to be an example of the mysterious gifts that young geniuses had been born with. But is that really so?
Over my years of studying experts in various fields, like Mozart, I have found that there's no such thing as a predefined ability. Actually, those people all develop their abilities through "deliberate practice", a purposeful and systematic type of practice that makes it possible for them to do things they otherwise could not. In them, potential is an expandable vessel, shaped by the various things they do throughout their lives.
One of my testimonies came from Ray Allen, a ten-time All-Star in the NBA. Allen's jump shot was not noticeably better than his teammates' back in high school; in fact, it was poor. But with hard work and dedication, he transformed his jump shot into one so graceful and natural that people assumed he was born with it.
But it doesn't mean "Just keep working at it, and you'll get there". Heartfelt desire and hard work alone will not lead to improved performance. The right sort of practice carried out over a sufficient period of time will lead to improvement. Nothing else. And this is true whether our goal is to become a concert pianist or just play the piano well enough to amuse ourselves, to be the greatest three-point shooter or just build ourselves up. Deliberate practice is the gold standard for anyone in any field who wishes to build new skills and abilities.
