Tai Chi is often described as "mediation in motion". There is (grow) evidence that this mind-body practice which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.
the fact that Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn't leave you breathless, it deals with the key components of (fit)— muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Tai Chi improves balance and, according to some studies, (reduce) falls. Proprioception (本体感受) — the ability (sense) the position of one' s body in space — declines with age. Tai Chi helps train this sense and also (great) improves muscle strength and flexibility, which makes easier to recover from a stumble (绊倒). Fear of falling can make you more likely to fall. Some studies have found that Tai Chi training helps relieve that fear.
Tai Chi is very safe, and no fancy equipment (need), so it's easy to get started. Don't be frightened by the names. Names like Yang, Wu, and Cheng are given to different (branch) of Tai Chi, in honor of people who designed the sets of movements called forms. In some forms, you learn a series of movements, while others focus more on breathing and meditation. Finding the very approach matches your interests and needs is the key.

8、When she was 86, Mom moved to our city. My husband, Kevin, and I found a lovely apartment for her. I was happy to help take care of her1 she arrived.
The day after she moved in, she called me to2 about the food nearby. "The pizza was like rubber. I couldn't3 it." "Mom, you're complaining to me. Wouldn't it make more sense to tell someone who can4 the problem?" We hung up. This was only her second day here! And week after week, Mom found more to complain about.
When with my friend Beth, I spent 20 minutes sharing how Mom's attitude5 me. "She seems6 . After everything Kevin and I do for her, all we hear is what she doesn't like." As the words spilled from my lips, I realized that I'd developed the same7 of complaining that annoyed me so much in Mom.
I decided to keep a better watch on my8. Things went fine for a few weeks. But soon I felt powerless to9 by myself and couldn't help complaining to Beth about Mom's10 again.
A few days later, I received a journal from my friend Torry. On the first page, he had written, "Jeanette, I use such a journal every day to11 things I'm thankful for." I wrote three things I was grateful for. When I looked at them,12 filled my heart. Maybe this was it. It was a joyous replacement that helped me overcome the complaining —13 .

10、An unlikely scandal (丑闻) affected the British government greatly. After Covid-19 forced the government to cancel the "A - level" exams that help determine university admission, the British education regulator used an algorithm (算法) to predict what score each student would have received on their exam.
The algorithm relied in part on how the school's students had historically been more successful on the exam. Schools with richer children tended to have better track records, so the algorithm gave wealthy students - even those on track for the same grades as poor students - much higher predicted scores. High-achieving, low - income pupils whose schools had not previously performed well were hit particularly hard. After threats of legal action and widespread demonstrations, the government backed down and canceled the algorithmic grading process entirely. This wasn't an isolated incident: In the United States similar issues troubled the International Baccalaureate exam, which used an opaque (不透明) artificial intelligence system to set students' scores, prompting protests from thousands of students and parents.
These episodes highlight some of the traps of algorithmic decision - making. As technology advances, companies, governments, and other organizations are increasingly relying on algorithms to predict important social outcomes, using them to distribute jobs, forecast crime, and even try to prevent child abuse. These technologies promise to increase efficiency, enable more targeted policy interventions, and remove human imperfections from decision-making processes. But critics worry that opaque machine learning systems will in fact reflect and further keep shortcomings in how organizations typically function - including by establishing the racial, class, and gender prejudices of the societies that develop these systems.
But there is an even more basic concern about algorithmic decision-making. Even in the absence of systematic class or racial prejudice, what if algorithms struggle to make even remotely accurate predictions about the track of individuals' lives?
(1)、Why did the author mention A-level exams in the first paragraph?A、To share a scandal. B、To present an example. C、To introduce the topic. D、To arouse public concern.(2)、Who are probably in favor of the algorithmic grading system?A、Average students from top schools. B、Straight A students from top schools. C、Average students from average families. D、Straight A students with disadvantaged background.(3)、What can we infer from the passage?A、The algorithmic grading system resulted in legal action. B、Algorithmic decision-making is not necessarily reliable. C、Algorithmic decision-making develops systematic prejudices D、The British government approves of the algorithmic grading system. -
11、The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis I launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.
And then what? What's the next great leap in humans' quest for the secrets of the universe? When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.
First off there's Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise (天堂), with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere. Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.
At the other end are the gas giants. Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water. NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.
As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi - permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.
Over the coming decades humans expect to see a rise of "space hotels", set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it's the next easiest thing to accomplish... after the Moon and Mars, of course.
(1)、What does the underlined word "quest" probably mean in the second paragraph?A、Question. B、Explanation. C、Request. D、Search.(2)、Which is the least likely to be explored in the next decades according to the passage?A、Mars. B、Mercury. C、Venus. D、Gas giants.(3)、What's the author's attitude towards the "space hotels"?A、Ambiguous. B、Critical. C、Hopeful. D、Indifferent.(4)、What's the passage mainly about?A、The launch of Artemis I. B、The secrets of the solar system. C、The missions of NASA. D、The areas of the future universe exploration. -
12、When the phone finally stopped ringing and the house lay still with grief, I filled my home with the sweet smell of peach pie to mask the scent of worry that still lingered.
The weekend after Dad's diagnosis (诊断), Mom had sent the same text to each concerned relative and friend: Jay was diagnosed with Pick's disease. We are going back to the doctor for more information. Then Mom put down the phone, rubbed her forehead, and suggested that we go for a drive. On the interstate, we passed a board with clear red letters: "Fredericksburg peaches, the best fruit you can find in Central Texas." Mom went to negotiate with the stand owner.
Now in our kitchen, the sweet smell of peach juice drifted into the living room and pulled Dad away from the football game on TV.
"Oh! You got peaches?" He eyed the fruit with childish glee (欢快).
"Here," I handed him a knife. "We're making peach pie."
I showed him how to peel the skin off. As I made pie dough, he asked questions: How long does it take to bake? Are you adding sugar? How many peaches? What should I do with the seeds? Showing him how to slice and measure and mix in a calm, firm voice, I suddenly felt grown up.
The summer had reversed our roles; now, I was the adult. I stayed home all summer and cooked his dinner, washed his T-shirts and helped him make phone calls. I stayed up late thinking about him and monitored him like an anxious caretaker.
The same day, before the afternoon drive and peach pie, I had held my tears as I read the diagnosis for Pick's disease: four to ten years, depending on how fast the damaged proteins overpower Dad's brain. I decided then that I would be grateful for just four more years with Dad, enough for him to see me become an adult for real.
(1)、Why did Mom propose a ride?A、To purchase fruits. B、To enjoy a trip. C、To release sorrow. D、To consult the doctor.(2)、What can we learn about the family from the passage?A、It takes years for Dad to recover. B、The author enjoys the time with Dad. C、Dad shows little interest in football games. D、The author gets annoyed by Dad's questions.(3)、Which of the following best describes this summer for the author?A、Tough and confusing. B、Boring but rewarding. C、Annoying and struggling. D、Painstaking but meaningful.(4)、Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage?A、Peach Pie B、Diagnosis for Dad C、Father And Daughter D、A Plain Summer Day -
13、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

Despite occupying a relatively small area, rainforests have an important role to play in maintaining the world and they are home to a rich (various) of medicinal plants, birds and animals.
As the lungs of the planet, rainforests have their own perfect system, ensures their own survival. The tall trees make a canopy (顶篷) of branches and leaves that protect themselves, smaller plants and the forest animals from heavy rain, dry heat (come) from the sun and strong winds. (amazing), the trees grow in such a way their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is a way (prevent) the spread of any tree diseases. The ground floor of the forest is not all fallen leaves, a clear land. It is where leaves turn food for the trees and other forest life.
Worryingly, rainforests around the world are disappearing at alarming rate. A few thousand years ago, rainforests (cover) as much as 12 percent of the land surface on Earth, but today this has fallen to less than 7 percent.

17、Everyone knows the advantages of using e-mail. It's much faster than ordinary mail. It's much cheaper than the telephone. However, it is not always good to use e-mail at work. Some companies are limiting the use of e-mail in their offices for several reasons.
You send out your message and then you have to wait for an answer. This is not a problem if you need to send simple information. But if the message is more complicated, e-mail is not so good.
There is another problem with e-mail: You don't get much information from the message. You have only the words themselves. This doesn't matter if the message is just about facts or if it is not important. You can't tell much about what the e-mail sender was thinking or feeling. You may put your own feelings into the message. And this can lead to communication problems in a company.
Psychologists from England studied office workers opening their e-mail. They found that certain kinds of messages made blood pressure go up. It went up if the messages seemed angry or negative. It also went up if the messages were from the boss. It went up the highest when the messages were both negative and from the boss.
The psychologists said that people should be careful how they use e-mail at work. This is especially true for the people with top jobs in a company. They should never send important news by e-mail. They should always meet face to face with the person.
A. One reason is that e-mail is only one-way.
B. Sometimes, their blood pressure went down.
C. Their messages can easily hurt or upset people.
D. And it's easier than trying to meet with someone in person.
E. The psychologists measured the blood pressure of the workers.
F. It can help to avoid misunderstanding and strengthen relationships.
G. But it might cause trouble if the message is about something important.

18、When we encounter a troublesome problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm. However, clear evidence has shown that when we create ideas together, we fail to maximize (使……最大化) collective intelligence.
To find the hidden potential in teams, it's better to try a method called "brainwriting". You start by asking group members to write down their thoughts independently. Next, they sit together and share them among the group without telling who came up with each idea. Then, each member evaluates them on his or her own, only after which do the team members come together to select and improve the most promising options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and expanding on them, the team can find and improve ideas that might not get attention otherwise.
An example of great brainwriting was in 2010 when 33 miners were trapped underground in Chile. Due to the emergency of the situation, the rescue team didn't have time for brainstorming. Rather, they established a global brainwriting system to gather individual ideas. A 24-year-old engineer came up with a tiny plastic telephone. This specialized tool ended up becoming the only means of communicating with the miners, making it possible to save them.
Research by organizational behavior scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why this method works. They find that the key to collective intelligence is balanced involvement (参与). In brainstorming meetings, it's too easy for participation to become one-sided in favor of the loudest voices. The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into conversation. The goal isn't to be the smartest person in the room. It's to make the room smarter.
Collective intelligence begins with individual creativity, but it doesn't end there. Individuals produce a larger number and broader range of novel ideas when they work alone. That means they not only come up with more smart ideas than groups, but also more terrible ideas. Therefore, it takes collective judgment to find the signal in the noise and bring out the best ideas.
(1)、What is special about brainwriting compared with brainstorming?A、It highlights group cooperation. B、It emphasizes quality over quantity. C、It encourages independent work. D、It prefers writing to oral exchanges.(2)、Why does the author mention the Chile mining accident in paragraph 3?A、To show a successful application of brainwriting. B、To introduce a tool developed during brainwriting. C、To praise a young man with brainwriting technique. D、To explain the role of brainwriting in communication.(3)、How does brainwriting promote collective intelligence according to paragraph 4?A、By blocking the loudest voices. B、By allowing equal involvement. C、By improving individual wisdom. D、By generating more creative ideas.(4)、Which of these titles best summarizes the article?A、Focusing on individual work for intelligence. B、Using effective methods to improve team intelligence. C、Enhancing team innovation with group brainstorming. D、Increasing team creativity with group brainwriting. -
19、Scientists have long said getting a good night's sleep is important to your health. The U.S. National Institute of Health says lack of sleep may even increase the risk of cognitive (认知) decline and Alzheimer's disease. Now, an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be similarly linked to such conditions.
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. The study examined 100 adults for their ability to think for an average of 4.5 years. The average age of the study subject was 75. Eighty-eight of the group had been identified as free of cognitive damage. Twelve subjects were judged very mildly damaged.
During the study, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline. The tests are combined into a cognitive score — the higher the score, the better. They also wore electroencephalography (EEG) devices for four to six nights to measure their brain activity during sleep.
Overall, cognitive scores declined for those who slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night — as measured by EEG (脑电图). But the scores stayed the same for those in the middle of the range.
Dr. Brendan Lacey is the director of the Washington University Sleep Medicine Center and led the research. He said, "Our study suggests that there is a sweet spot for total sleep time for best cognitive performance." "Short and long sleep times are associated with worse cognitive performance, perhaps due to insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality," Lacey added.
Greg Elder is a sleep researcher at Northumbria University in New Castle, Britain. He was surprised about the findings that sleeping longer than 6.5 hours was linked with cognitive decline. Elder wrote in The Conversation, "Each person's sleep needs are individual. If people feel rested, there is no need to change how they sleep." He also noted that it suggests that sleep quality may be the key, as opposed to simply total sleep time.
(1)、What does the text mainly talk about?A、The importance of a good night's sleep to health B、A study on how to improve your cognitive ability C、The link between sleeping length and cognitive loss D、The result of increasing sleep time for short sleepers(2)、What do we know about the 100 participants of the study?A、Most of them don't have cognitive problems. B、Some of them are suffering from lack of sleep. C、All of the participants are more than 75 years old. D、A few of them are under medical observation.(3)、What do the underlined words "a sweet spot" refer to in paragraph 5?A、Insufficient sleep B、Poor-quality sleep C、Too much sleep. D、A middle range sleep(4)、What is Greg Elder's attitude toward the findings of the study?A、Supportive. B、Doubtful. C、Indifferent. D、Objective. -
20、Zoe Chambers was a successful PR (Public Relations) consultant (顾问) and life was going well—she had a great job, a beautiful flat and a busy social life in London. Then one evening in June last year, she received a text message telling her she was out of work. The first two weeks were the most difficult to live through." she said. "After everything I'd done for the company, they dismissed me by text!I was So angry and I just didn't feel like looking for another job. I hated everything about the city and my life."
