Once upon a time, there was a poor man and a rich man. The poor man's son was named Ham, and the rich man's son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends.
One day, the two youths began a discussion as to whether wealth or effort was more powerful. Jim said that wealth was most important, while Ham declared for effort. At last, Ham declared, "Let us put it to the test: Let us both go to some far country and try whether wealth or effort is more successful." Jim agreed to this plan and they fixed a day for starting.
Then they both went home and collected some money and started off early one morning. After a time, they came to a certain country where Ham suggested that they should look for employment. But Jim did not like the notion of becoming a servant and he said that he would live on the money which he had brought with him, which would last for a year or two. "You may do as you like," answered Ham, "but for my part, I must look for work." So he went to a village and found employment as a teacher in a school while his friend rented a house and started making various friends, eating, drinking and having fun all day.
One year later, Ham earned enough money, built a beautiful house and also got married. However, Jim had already spent all his money, and his friends who indulged in wine and meat also left him. Hungry and sorrowful, he went to Ham and said, "My dear friend, regarding the question of ‘wealth or effort is more important', I think I've already had the answer."

Life is as good as you make it. I made the most of my time and I loved my life, fitting work, school, homework, and fun with my family and friends into my busy schedule. I was an outgoing, energetic, fun-loving twenty-something, with an optimistic attitude and strong faith. I valued my relationships and worked hard at achieving my goals.
I was living with a close friend while working at a few jobs to put myself through university. In my last term, life turned upside down. It was a clear morning on September 25th in 2020. I was working as a traffic controller, wearing my high-visibility jacket. As I was holding up my stop sign, I was hit by a car at about 80 kilometers an hour. I flew across the street, and landed in front of my coworker.
I was in critical condition. I was admitted to the ICU. After several surgeries, the doctor informed me that, according to the medical reports and my condition, I would never walk again.
Because of my brain injury, my memory didn't last longer than the present moments that I was experiencing. My life was very difficult. I had lost all of my independence. For a long time, I required help to be fed, bathed, moved, dressed, and even taken to the toilet. I couldn't stand. I could only lie down or sit in my wheelchair. I had also lost my sense of smell and taste.
I was slow to process information and my vocabulary was very simple. I couldn't follow people's conversations and I lost my creativity. I always felt stupid and confused. Without visual memory, I couldn't distinguish fruits, vegetables, meats, animals, or even people that I should have known.

You can assess your opportunities and see the big picture by reflecting on the following questions:
What are your hard and soft skills? Hard skills are teachable abilities and skill sets that are fairly easy to quantify. In contrast, soft skills are interpersonal skills or people skills. For example, if you are expert at multiple languages, you could pursue a career as a translator or a multinational content writer. Likewise, if you are excellent at collaborative (协作的) teamwork but have poor time management skills, you may want to seek a collaborative working environment with flexible work schedules.
What kind of work-life balance are you aiming for? Some people are happy to work 9, 10, or even 12 hours a day for the sake of advancing their careers. Others need more time to spend with their families and friends, on their studies, or on other ventures.
What industries interest you? Once you have a list of industries that arouse your interest, start seeking out opportunities within those sectors. Ensure that they agree with your preferred work-life balance and skill set as well. Instead, think about the kind of impact you want to have and how you want to work.
In some cases, you may need to return to college or sign up for online courses to gain the right qualifications for your dream career. With microlearning, there are plenty of educational and engaging ways to learn new skills and information. Returning to school could be key to boosting your marketable skills and credentials (资质). It could also broaden your horizons and introduce you to new career opportunities you hadn't considered before.
A. What is your current educational level?
B. What kind of education is suitable for you?
C. So don't get too hung up on a specific title or industry.
D. In turn, this makes you more competitive in the overall job market.
E. Then, take opportunities that can provide the balance you are looking for.
F. Consider the type of work-life balance that suits your needs and preferences.
G. Identifying your hard and soft skills will help you measure available opportunities.

Recent research has revealed that people with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia (痴呆), yet only 15% to 25% of adults benefit from hearing aids. Hearing loss often comes on so gradually that many ignore it.
In July, at the annual meeting of the Alzheimer's Association, Frank Lin from Johns Hopkins University presented results from a random clinical trial of 977 adults between 70 and 84 with untreated hearing loss. One group received good hearing care, including hearing aids, and another group took part in a program about successful aging. Three years later hearing aids didn't make much difference to the healthiest participants. But those at the higher risk of dementia because of age and health conditions saw a 48% reduction in cognitive (认知的) worsening when they got hearing aids.
When hearing loss is untreated, the brain's organization changes. Adults with hearing loss need to make extra efforts just to listen, which may overly consume cognitive reserves, says Anu Sharma of the University of Colorado. Hearing loss is also associated with more falls, higher healthcare costs, and increased loneliness. "Hearing is fundamental to healthy aging." says Nicholas Reed, who worked with Lin on the cognitive-decline study.
These consequences of hearing loss contributed to the government's decision last year to create a category of over-the-counter (非处方的) hearing aids. Traditional aids averaging $4,700 a pair aren't covered by Medicare or private insurance. It's too soon to assess whether the new devices will close the yawning gap between the large need for hearing aids and the smaller demand for them. In one survey, only about half of non-users said they would use hearing aids even if they were free. The key to getting around that dilemma will be "the common desire of wanting to hear well" and the sense that "everyone is doing it", Lin says. If "wireless earbuds also become hearing aids, that changes the whole perspective of what it means to use hearing technology."
(1)、What does the recent research find about people with hearing loss?A、They can recover with the help of technology. B、They can ignore the problem as they get older. C、They have more chances of getting dementia. D、They're increasingly helped by the government.(2)、What happened to the participants with hearing aids in Frank's trial?A、Their aging process slowed owing to a program. B、Hearing aids proved a help to cure their illness. C、They saw a slight boost in their overall health. D、Decline of their cognitive abilities was relieved.(3)、How will the brain be affected by untreated hearing loss?A、Its cognitive reserves will be overused. B、Its aging process will be slightly delayed. C、Some of its functions will be in disorder. D、Its fundamental abilities will be harmed.(4)、What does the underlined word "yawning" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Complicated. B、Large. C、Irreplaceable. D、Appealing. -

"It's absolutely safe to say that animals are beneficial to our mental and physical health," says Nancy, director of the Center for Human-Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University. Nancy says evidence is accumulating that levels of the stress drop in people after just 5 to 20 minutes' interaction with dogs — even if it's not their pet. And it's not just humans that benefit from these brief exchanges. "We see the same thing in the dogs when they interact with humans," Nancy says.
Now, the therapy dogs used in research are screened for things like friendliness, good behavior and responsiveness. They're not necessarily going to be great for every single person. But for people who get it and connect with the animals, they can make a big difference.
Research on the health benefits of human interactions with animals, especially with dogs, has exploded in recent years. Though the field is still young, the quality of the evidence is improving as new research begins to include more randomly controlled trials looking at short interactions.
So how does hanging out with dogs help us focus? Mueller, whose research focuses on the psychology of human-animal relationships, says dogs drive us to experience the world more like they do. Animals, particularly dogs, live in the moment, experiencing their environment with wonder all the time. Watching dogs sniff the grass or explore the world around them cues us to pay more attention, too. There's some evidence that the act of actually touching a dog might be an important part of their calming effect.
But it's not just how we clue to dogs that makes the relationship special. They can connect with another human being. And they do it without the ability to use words. As my dog-loving 9-year-old kid recently told me, dogs just have a way of speaking to our hearts.
(1)、What do Nancy's words lead us to believe?A、Pet dogs have long-term benefits for their owners. B、Stress levels accumulate for people without pets. C、A brief interaction with dogs benefits both sides. D、It's necessary to keep pets for our mental health.(2)、Where does the new research differ from the previous research?A、It has random trials with brief interactions. B、It focuses on the effect of activities on pets. C、It includes therapy dogs for health screening. D、It ensures the research proper for everyone.(3)、What does the author want to stress by mentioning his kid?A、The importance of pet ownership for kids. B、Evidence of pets' interaction with humans. C、Man's skills to understand clues from pets. D、Dogs' ability to relate to humans' feelings.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、Pets can relate to us positively. B、Pet dogs bring shared benefits. I had a good job. No, a great job in a marketing division of a Fortune 500 company. Besides developing much of the sale and marketing literature for the company, I organized luxury travel trips for top salespeople to Hawaii and Spain on the largest tour ships in the world. However, after working for this first-class company for fourteen years, I got to think about what it would be like to design a job around what I enjoyed most and spend more time with my wife and sons.
My wife was a stay-at-home mom, so I would sacrifice (牺牲) our only income and insurance for nothing more than a pipe dream. Yet, after conducting extensive research, reading books on how to launch a business as a copywriter, the goal slowly developed.
At thirty-seven, I had an opportunity to chase a dream—to run a home-based business and spend more time with my family. While spending more time with my family, I launched my copywriting business in June 1991, 32 years ago.
Looking back, leaving the Fortune 500 company is one of the best decisions I've made. And, while working with clients, sharpening my writing skills on multiple subjects, and winning twelve writing awards, I had the honor to add these achievements to the resume of my life. I watched my sons grow up, played hundreds of unscheduled backyard baseball games and learned it's more fun to play football in the rain.
How would I have benefited if I had never taken a break from my corporate career? Life provides windows of' opportunity, but they close quickly. For me, to remain in that first-class company during this "window" came at a price too high. I wasn't willing to exchange more of my family life for my professional life.
(1)、What can we know about the author?A、He showed great love for his family. B、His company was going out of business. C、His salary was very low in his company. D、He couldn't adapt to the working environment.(2)、What did the author intend to do after leaving his job?A、To become a house husband. B、To be a distinguished scholar. C、To engage in fiction writing. D、To establish his own company.(3)、What does the author say in paragraph 4?A、His decision to resign showed great will. B、His leaving the job offered a high return. C、His dream of being a rich man came true. D、His exchange for family life was valueless.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Any Dream Is Worth Pursuing B、Family Needs Our Company C、Every Decision Has a Price D、Writing Makes One Content -

" Now that' s the creative spirit we need for this challenge!" I said. " Maybe, since we don' t know exactly what we want to be yet, we should start by choosing some cool costume-making materials. "
" I' ve got it!" Ollie said, scooping up a bunch of fallen leaves.
" Really? " I said. " You' re going to make an entire costume out of leaves? "

" They' re totally free, and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me. "
" Don' t you mean, a tree as great as we? " I grinned.

How to Be Funny?
Humor can help you connect with other people and make unpleasant situations a little more bearable. But it' s not that hard once you tap into your inner sense of humor. Even if you don' t think you' re naturally funny, there are things you can do to make yourself and other people laugh.
Learn from funny people. You can expand your reach a good deal by listening to other funny people. Whether they' re professional comedians, your parents, your kids, or your boss, learning from the funny people in your life is a key step towards being a funny person. Look for what you admire most in these people.
Broaden your factual knowledge for joke material. They may be your amazing knowledge of 17th-century poetry, your familiarity with fishing trips that went wrong, etc. Whatever the material is, it needs to resonate(引起共鸣)with your audience.
Being funny doesn' t come in a one-size-fits-all package. What makes you funny is unique to you and the way you observe the world. Trust that you do have a funny bone; as babies, we laugh from four months of age, and all children express humor naturally from the kindergarten age, using humor to entertain themselves and others. It' s already in you. You just need to bring it out!
Read, read, read. Get your hands on everything that is funny, and consume it like your mom told you not to. Chemists become chemists by reading and practicing chemistry. Sports writers become sports writers by reading and writing about sports.
A. Strike while the iron is hot.
B. Trust in your inner sense of humor.
C. Observe the funnier things these people say or do.
D. Being funny might seem to take a great deal of work.
E. It' s much easier to find funny moments in familiar material.
F. You' ll become a humorous person by reading and practicing jokes.
G. The better you know someone, the easier it will be to make them laugh.

Researchers from The University of Queensland(UQ)have helped design a new app to protect birds at risk of extinction across the world by eliminating language barriers among scientists. The Bird Language Diversity web app will help provide a " birds eye view" , ensuring vital information is shared to improve worldwide conservation.
UQ' s Dr Pablo Negret said the research team analysed more than 10,000 bird species, and found that 1,587 species have 10 languages or more spoken within their distributions. " Scientific information on species can be spread across different languages, but valuable information can go missing or get lost in translation," Dr Negret said. " Without enough sharing of information, this can affect the effectiveness of conservation measures. "
Take the common bird Pochard for example. It is classified as vulnerable species(易危种)and crosses 108 countries in Europe, Asia and north Africa, where a total of 75 official languages are spoken. The survival of the common Pochard, and so many other species, depends on effective cooperation and policy agreements among people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
This app reveals where threatened and migratory birds exist geographically, in relation to the language spoken in those regions. " We hope the app will encourage researchers and conservation organisations to interact with their peers in other regions, especially if they speak different languages, and be a starting point to allow everyone to work together to protect threatened species," Dr Negret said.
Dr Tatsuya Amano, a researcher and the co-author of the paper, said this work could extend further than bird species. " Any species, whether they' re mammals, amphibians(两栖动物), or plants, with a range crossing multiple countries will be impacted by language barriers, as well as species that migrate across different countries, such as marine species and butterflies," he said. " The significance of the impact of poor communication on such an important issue is evident, and is the reason why we' re working hard to improve science communication across languages. "
(1)、What does the underlined word " eliminating" in paragraph 1 mean?A、Giving in to. B、Coming across. C、Putting up with. Why do children learn so quickly? Is it simply a necessity, or is a child' s brain more capable of taking in new information than an adult' s brain?
" It is a common way of thinking that ‘children are like sponges' and have the magical ability to learn new skills faster than an adult, but there are some misconceptions here, " said Debbie Raven, a researcher at the University of Chester. " A child' s cognitive (认知的) development is age-related and, naturally, children perform worse than their older peers in most areas. However, there are times when being young brings an advantage, and this is especially true around their earliest years.
This advantage is largely due to neuroplasticity, meaning the brain' s ability to form and change its connections, pathways and wiring based on experiences. Neuroplasticity is what gives children the capacity to learn-and, if necessary, unlearn-habits, routines, approaches and actions very quickly. This ability is most constant and rapid before a child' s fifth birthday, when much of what they encounter or experience is novel. " This ability to learn quickly is connected to several areas, including plasticity, their experiences with adults, their environment, and their biological drive to explore, " Raven said. " Childhood is a place where children spend their time catching up with adults' more sophisticated abilities. "
Language learning, in particular, is an area where children often have a huge advantage over adults. This is largely because " babies are able to tune in to the rhythm and sounds used in their native language, and can therefore become fluent speakers by the age of four. " This ability can help young children learn a second or third language with apparent ease, Raven said.
In a research paper, the authors suggest that " human babies are born seeing and hearing linguistic information that older children and adults miss, although they lose this ability with more experience in their environments. Moreover, babies can " discriminate speech sounds and tones used in al of the world' s languages, making them open to al input, regardless of the linguistic environment they are born into.

If there' s one thing I' ve realized since becoming a male college student, it' s that finding a summer job is nearly impossible. I've applied to so many places and I' ve experienced so many interviews, but I always either get straight-up refusal or never hear from the company again.
One time, I even called one of the companies multiple times, but the manager avoided me. I was close to giving up. I felt like I was the only one struggling hard. I had a pretty good resume, and I always dressed nicely for my interviews, so why couldn' t I get a job?
Well, the reason is actually right in front of me—I am a student. Companies generally want students who can work all year long, but most of them aren' t willing to be flexible with schedules. I couldn' t tell you how many times interviewers told me that they were looking for someone permanent.
I tried looking for jobs marked as temporary ones. And I even once tried to apply through a temporary agency. But it didn' t work. Even if I wanted to work during the school year, none of the companies wanted to hire me because of my limited weekday availability. And despite not knowing if I could juggle (尽量兼顾) both school and a job, I even started to tell interviewers that I would like to work during the school year and give up my weekends. But I had no luck.
I' m not sure if there are others like me out there. But if you are going through something similar, what I want to tell you is to keep on trying. Despite being rejected so many times, I still applied for any job that I was qualified for. I even started my job search before the semester ended to get ahead. Eventually, I got my ideal summer job.
I know it' s frustrating, and you may feel like you' ve tried everything—that' s how I' ve felt for a long time. And now, with companies requiring years of experience, it' s even harder to get a job if you' re someone like me. But don' t give up. Keep searching and applying, sign up for sites that send you job offers and look on the university' s website for on-campus jobs.
