New research confirms the great influence of experiences like Ms. Alexander's. Researchers found people who perform an unplanned act of kindness tend to undervalue how much the receiver will appreciate it. This could hold many of us back from doing nice things for others more often.

In a recent experiment, 84 participants (参与者) were given a hot chocolate on two cold weekends at a park and were told they could keep it or give it to a stranger. The 75 participants who gave away their drink were asked to guess how "big" their kind act would feel to the receiver on a scale (等级) from 0 to 10, and how the receiver would rate their feelings upon receiving it. The receivers were then asked to report how they actually felt using the same scale.

It turned out that the people doing the kind thing always undervalued the importance of their actions. While they thought they were offering something small, the receivers considered it more meaningful because someone had done something nice for them.

Despite longing for kindness, many people feel awkward at the thought of being kind. The "little inner voice" often leads them to question whether their behavior might be misunderstood or whether it will make the receiver feel pressured to pay it back.

But an act of kindness is unlikely to have unintended results; it can lead to even more kindness. If you are not already in the habit of performing unplanned kind acts, start by thinking about what you are interested in and how you can turn that into an offering for others.

Every day, as I took long walks through North Vancouver, I would think about the potential joys of a physically closer network. Wouldn't it be great to have someone who could join me at a moment's notice? How good would it be to have more non-scheduled hangs instead of ones that had to be planned weeks in advance?

This doesn't have to be just a dream. Although technology is making it easier to maintain long-distance connections nothing can replace seeing friends in person. Researchers have found that happiness spreads "like an emotional contagion (传染)", especially among those who live close together.

Friends who live in the same city could decide to move within walking distance of one another — the same neighborhood, block, or even apartment building. Doing so would likely involve a lot of effort, but the resulting community could pay emotional dividends for years. Doing so would make it easier to support one another materially and emotionally.

Moving close to your friends requires some masterminding. Cities can make doing so easier by ending single-family zoning codes and encouraging a variety of housing types in neighborhoods. But even without official policies, people can make it work on their own. Sam Unger, 32, a food scientist and a friend of mine, has created a chosen family like this in Montreal, where about 15 of her friends live within walking distance of one another. When someone moves away, they try to transfer (移交) their lease (租约) to other friends. And when pals based elsewhere in the city are looking to move, Unger will try selling them on the positives of her neighborhood and sometimes even look for housing for them. "It's funny," she told me. "The other day, I bought a fire extinguisher, and she's like, ‘Oh, well, I have one. You could just call me if you had a fire, and I'd be right over with it.'"

There's one patient that Sarah Rose Black still thinks about. Back in 2019, the nursing team at Toronto's Cancer Center called to ask if she could reach out to a patient who had been there for about a week. The man was struggling, and unwilling to communicate with workers or be part of any activities. 

Black isn't a doctor or a nurse. Since 2013 she has played an important role for patients at the center as a music therapist (治疗专家). On any day, she might see one person who's anxious about an operation, another who's in need of a calm moment.

So, Black walked into the patient's room and introduced herself. She asked if she could sit and offer to play some music. In an effort to persuade him, she said, "If you don't like it, you can just tell me to leave." After some gentle urging, the man in his 70s, who had lung cancer, told her a few musicians he liked and then turned away to look out the window. But as she started to play one of his favorites, a change came over him. He turned towards Black and started to cry. 

She stopped playing. "Do you want me to continue?" "Certainly," he said through tears. "It was as if the music went places that nothing else could," recalls Black. The music showed up at a moment when it felt like a hug. 

As Sarah Rose Black says, people have been connecting with music for their whole lives—she is just helping them use it again at a time when they need it most. 

"We have a heartbeat, so we have a drum (鼓) inside us; we are wired to be musical people," she says. She smiles softly as she reflects back on the experience.

How to Politely Cancel PlansOver Text

◆Text them as soon as possible.

That way, your friends can rearrange their schedules. If you know you cannot make it, try to text a day ahead of time. Otherwise, your friends might be annoyed about the inconvenience. If there's an emergency and you have to cancel the plan at the last minute, that's fine. 

◆Be honest about your situation.

 If you've encountered a change in your schedule, just tell them what it is. Your friends will be more understanding if they can tell you're telling the truth. Just say things like: "I ran into an issue at work." or "I'm dealing with some family problems."

◆Ask if you can reschedule.

Instead of saying "Let's hang out soon!", pick a new time, so your friends know that you're serious.  Try to include this in your original message so they know what you're doing right away, and make sure it's a plan you can stick to so you don't have to cancel again.

Eating insects is one of those ideas that never quite seem to catch on. The United Nations supported the idea a decade ago, but, in the West at least, insects remain mostly absent from supermarket shelves. Faced with this situation, scientists have been exploring other options. One is to feed insects to farm animals, which are not so picky.

Of course, insects need to eat, too. To date, they have mostly been raised on leftover chicken feed. But the supply of that is limited, and if insect-raised meat is to take off, new sources will be needed. In a paper in the Journal of Applied Entomology, Niels Thomas Eriksen, a biochemist at Aalborg University, suggests feeding them on the waste products of the beer industry.

The world knocks back around 185 billion litres of beer every year. Each litre produces between three and ten litres of wastewater full of abandoned substances that are richer in protein but not in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) , especially compared with chicken feed. Most insects grown for feed depend, in the wild, on the carbohydrates found in fruit which goes bad. Whether insects would actually consider beer waste square meal was, therefore, unclear.

The researchers used the baby black soldier flies. The insects were divided into three groups, which were offered beer waste, chicken feed and a mixture of both respectively. The researchers monitored both their weight gain and the amount of carbon dioxide they breathed out, which helped assess the insects' metabolic (新陈代谢的) performance. The babies happily consumed both beer waste and chicken feed, and grew equally well on either food source. When Dr Eriksen made further chemical analysis, he found few differences in the nutrients needed for farm animals' growth. 

What the researchers found is good news for some other industries whose waste is likewise plentiful and protein-rich, and they now look to be reasonable targets for nutrient recycling by insects. Whether consumers will be willing to eat insect-raised meat, though, remains to be seen.

It's midafternoon. You're full from lunch. The day is warm. You're starting to feel sleepy. Should you give in to the comfort of a nap (小睡)?

From the viewpoint of health, it may be worth it. Though there is a hassle when it comes to whether napping benefits everyone, we generally acknowledge that naps can improve at least some people's cognitive (认知的) performance in the short term.

For example, scientists reviewed a past experiment that focused on healthy participants with regular sleep cycles. In that experiment, participants were given math problems that could be solved with a shortcut that they weren't told about. Some participants were encouraged to take a nap before dealing with the problems. It was found that those who napped-and spent even just 30 seconds in the first, lightest stage of sleep-were 2.7 times more likely to figure out the math shortcut than those who stayed awake. But entering a deeper sleep stage had a negative effect.

The benefits of napping are strongest for people who have sleep debt, such as shift workers, new parents and elderly people whose nighttime sleep is always interrupted. They all seem to get a boost through napping: a 2013 study focusing on such people, for example, showed that taking a nap during one's night shift work reduced sleepiness and improved overall performance, even if people were slightly inactive as they came out of their nap-a phenomenon called "sleep inertia (惰性)".

There is something we can do to reduce sleep inertia. A 20-minute nap is good for recharging, and 60 to 90 minutes of sleep can be even more restorative. The nap to avoid is one lasting more than 20 minutes and less than 60 minutes, which is most likely to lead to sleep inertia.

One holiday a few years ago, I spent hours being transported on trains, buses and planes. I read a novel for a while, then stared out the window, in a black mood. I was turned into goods, being shifted from one location to another. Then, finally, came the exciting section of the holiday when I hired a car.

My wife Jocasta and I followed the positioning system, turning right, then right again, and found ourselves in a small town. I spoke to the positioning system, "We don't want to be here; we want the highway." Then it asked me to turn right again and again. With every turn, the street narrowed. The walls were so close that I had to hold my breath.

Another car appeared, coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver signaled, telling me I had to make way. But how? I didn't have the courage to back up along the impossibly narrow passage. Soon some locals came to help. One lady stood at the back of the vehicle, waving me on. She continued making "this way, this way" movements with her arms. In an act of blind trust, I followed her instructions, creeping (小心行进) backwards and forwards. Remarkably, it worked. I completed my turn into the side street. The other car passed and the driver gave me a grateful wave. Then I followed the lady's suggestion and — finally — saw the highway.

My hands were shaking. I breathed in and out. Jocasta turned to me. "You're my hero," she said. I looked at her, expecting a shadow of a teasing (嘲笑的) smile, but can find none. "You're my hero," she repeated. "I mean it. You did a really good job." Finally, I managed to steady my nerves. Then we set off again and the car sped smoothly away. Who would exchange all this for a self-driving car?

My friend invited me to a trapeze (高空秋千) class. I was doubtful because of a lack of courage and a short of self-confidence, but her enthusiasm and assurances of strict safety rules won me over.

I had been fearful of heights since elementary school and avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying trapeze. I figured it wasn't much different from swinging (摆动) on the monkey bars as a kid. One difficulty I didn't expect was the ladder (梯子). In order to reach the trapeze, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.

I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow climb up the ladder. "If she's afraid of heights, why did she sign up for a trapeze class?" However, my friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to encourage me. Besides, his distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm (节奏) and kept going. With a slow and steady pace, I made it to the top. The cheers from my classmates rang out below.

An instructor told me to step to the edge of the platform. He reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He also asked me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform a trick.

As the instructor counted down, I took a deep breath and pushed off the platform, swinging back and forth. At that moment, I lost awareness of time and space. Fortunately, the instructor's voice came over the loudspeaker, giving me step-by-step instructions for performing a trick. Instead of doubting my inability to perform the trick, I took his directions one step at a time.

While the key to success in both  (person) and professional relationships lies in your ability  (communicate) well, it's not the words that you use  your body language that speaks the loudest.

In some instances, what comes out of your mouth and what you communicate through your body language may be two  (total) different things. If you say one thing, but your body language says something else, your listener will likely feel that you're being dishonest.

No one expected Jamie MoCrazy to live after her fall. The chances of 1 were slim when her brain started bleeding in eight spots. Family and friends 2 , hoping for a miracle (奇迹) but fearing the worst.

Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail.

California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically (垂直地) farmed produce. Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong backing—New Jersey's AeroFarms and Kentucky's AppHarvest—filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.

The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. "The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to," he said.

Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call "controlled environment agriculture". There are different methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water. Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.

Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.

But critics question the sustainability (可持续性) of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible. Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work—except in special cases. Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, "It's just hard to be very profitable."

While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.

Early information from the park service shows that across the nation's 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.

Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.

Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, "It's very hot especially when there's a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face."

Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service's website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.

Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.

Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. "It's hot, but the scenery is awesome," he said.
