Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a project to improve the situation.
Under the Velibproject (‘Velib' comes from veloliberty, or ‘bicycle freedom') people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it's only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all gray and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velibstations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a project like this. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian said, "These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won't use a bicycle - they'll still use their cars."
A city spokesman said, "The bicycle project won't solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren't any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too."
(1)、What can we learn about the Velibproject?A、Its bikes have no baskets. B、Its bikes are light and colorful. C、It aims to make traveling easier. D、It owns more stations than the subway.(2)、If you use a Velibfor 1 hour, you should pay ____.A、Free B、€1. C、€29. D、€30.(3)、Why do some people disagree with the Velibproject?A、The cost is rather high. B、It's hard to find a Velibstation. C、It's not suitable for a long journey. D、The distance between two Velibstations is long. -

Each morning a rich man found a poor man sitting on a bench in the park. The poor man always sat there, looking at the big hotel in which the rich man lived. One day, the rich man got out of his car and said to the poor man, "Excuse me. I want to know why you sit here and look at my hotel every morning." " Sir, " said the poor man, " I am a failure. China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I travelled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare(罕见). Yet, since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found there are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it'sthe easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—sliver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride evenon sidewalks. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars can't provide.
Eager to be a part of this Chinese culture, I bought a bicycle. Since the weather was great that day, I couldn't wait to jump up on my bicycle and started for home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a pack of bikers while cars on the streets appeared suddenly now and then. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was like crossing highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

Three Things to Do Before You Are 18
Are you bored with your daily life? Here are some things you should try before you are 18.
★Learn to swim
Seriously, this is so important that it can save your life. If you can't swim well, you won't be able to do water sports like waterskiing, surfing and diving. Even taking a boat trip will be dangerous for you. Make sure you do it.
★Try at least one kind of team sports
Being a good team player is an important skill in life. You can't just think of yourself, but have to work well with other people. Other advantages of team sports like basketball, football and baseball are that they keep you fit and healthy, and they are also great fun. Teams usually have a good social life too—you'll go to lots of parties and make many friends.
★Collect something
One of the best hobbies for under-18s is collecting things. You could collect kinds of stamps, or you could collect things that make you remember what you have done, like cinema tickets for films you have seen or letters from friends. The best way to collect is to have a special album to put your collection in and to write what each thing means to you. That way you won't forget.
(1)、The most important reason for learning to swim is that ____.A、you might feel well B、itcan make you healthy C、you might easily do lots of things D、itcan save your life(2)、The writer tells us that one of the best hobbies is to ____ .A、collect something B、dosome water sports C、send letters to your friends D、playbasketball with your friends(3)、There are lots of advantages of being a good team player other than ____ .A、work well with other people B、keepyou fit and healthy C、have agood social life D、improveyour English(4)、The passage is mainly about ____before you are 18.A、good habits to keep B、skillsto have C、things to do D、sportsto play -

Dad handed me the bucket and the net with a long, wooden handle. He gave Paulie two dead fish wrapped in newspaper. They were tied up with string like a present. I held my nose, but Paulie held those fish like they were his best baseball cards.
"Since we all want crabs for supper, catch a whole bunch. But just in case you don't, we have leftover broccoli (花椰菜)." Dad said with a wink.
The salty air from Chesapeake Bay filled our noses. This was the best place in the world to catch blue crabs. They like grassy, shadowy water, so Paulie and I headed for our old wooden dock. It was hot, and I sat down and swung my legs over the edge, into the cool water. Paulie struggled to tie the string to one of the slippery fish. Then he slid the extra fish into the bucket and set it in the dark water under the dock for later.
"Here." Paulie handed me the baited string. "Dangle (提着) this down in the water to call the crabs."
Crabs love smelly, old fish, so our first crab didn't take long to come. Its big claw clamped (紧夹住) the bait, and I raised the string real slow so Paulie could net it. But my legs swishing (发出刷刷声) in the water startled that crab, and it let go and floated back to the bottom like a leaf off a tree. Paulie brought up the net and stood there with the handle on the dock.
"Kathy, I can't believe you're going to be in third grade and can't sit still for one minute," he said.
"And I can't believe you're going to be in sixth grade and haven't caught any crabs yet."
I went back to dangling the fish.

Like many other students you may have various people, including family members and friends, (give) input on your college decision.
While many of your trusted relatives and peers (同龄人)may have very(value) advice that can help you to make the decision, finally the choice is yours and yours alone. Only you can fully realize which aspects of a college will make you truly happy and(satisfy), so keep that at the front of your mind.
Moreover, fully consider each option. It can be easy(let) a particular school become a front-runner early onyour decision-making process, and it may even become the winning choice — but be sure to carefully evaluate every schoolhas accepted you, since you had particular reasons for applying to each school.
Do keepopen mind. Students can change majors, but remember that there's no re-living a certain semester(学期), and there's no making up for lost time. Don't go to a school(specific)for a high school relationshipto make someone else happy. A(student) college experience is his or her own, and the student must put his or her education first.

Most smartphones allow you to run locationsharing software that uses the phone's GPS capability to let friends and family know your exact location. There are lots of great uses for this technology. So make sure you're permitted to use an app or service, and pay attention to how you are using it. Here're some important points you may find helpful.
Choose what's best for you. Some locationsharing services are games that let you give a shoutout when you've turned up at a particular spot. Still others continue to share your location until you change the setting. Be sure you know exactly how your service shares your location.
Know who your friends are. This means people can search to see if you're online and add you as a friend. It's important to remember that sharing your location with people you've never met in real life is risky, so you should carefully manage friend requests and share your location only with people you know and trust.
Some services automatically stop sending your location after a period of time, but others will send it forever — until you stop it. Review your contact list periodically and delete anyone to whom you no longer feel comfortable revealing your location.
Update parents. Locationbased services are a great way for teens to let parents know where they are without having to call or text. If you're heading home late at night, you can also use a service like Glympseto share your location as you drive, so they'll know if you have car trouble or get stuck in traffic.
A. Check back often.B. Keep sending your location.
C. However, these services are not for all children.
D. With its help, you can easily share your location with them.
E. Checkins ease worries so they don't have to follow your every move.
F. Others show where you are all the time or for a period of time you set.
G. Some location services operate like Facebook, where you invite and accept friends.

Last year, 138,000 San Francisco residents used Airbnb, a popular app designed to connect home renters and travelers. It's a striking number for a city with a population of about 850,000, and it was enough for Airbnb to win a major victory in local elections, as San Francisco voters struck down a debatable rule that would have placed time restrictions and other regulations on short-term rental services.
The company fiercely opposed the measure Proposition F, with a nearly $10 million advertising campaign. It also contacted its San Franciscan users with messages urging them to vote against Proposition F.
Most people think of Airbnb as a kind of couch-surfing app. The service works for one-night stays on road trips and longer stays in cities, and it often has more competitive pricing than hotels. It's a textbook example of the "sharing economy", but not everyone is a fan.
The app has had unintended consequences in San Francisco. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported last year, a significant amount of renting on Airbnb is not in line with the company's image: middle-class families putting up a spare room to help make ends meet. Some users have taken advantage of the service, using it to turn their multiple properties into vacation rentals or even full-time rentals. Backers of Proposition F argued that this trend takes spaces off the conventional, better-regulated housing market and contributes to rising costs.
"The fact is, widespread abuse of short-term rentals is taking much needed housing off the market and harming our neighborhoods," said ShareBetter SF, a group that supported Proposition F. Hotel unions have protested the company's practices in San Francisco and other cities, saying that it creates an illegal hotel system.
San Francisco is in the middle of a long-term, deeply rooted housing crisis that has seen the cost of living explode. Actually, explode is a generous term. The average monthly rent for an apartment is around $4, 000. Located on a narrow outcropping of land overlooking the bay, San Francisco simply doesn't have enough space to accommodate the massive inflow of young, high-salaried tech employees flocking to Silicon Valley.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, some San Francisco residents supported the measure simply because it seemed like a way to check a big corporation. Opponents of Proposition F countered that the housing crisis runs much deeper, and that passing the rule would have discouraged a popular service while doing little to solve the city's existing problems.
(1)、The intention of Proposition F is to ____.A、place time limits in local election. B、set limits on short-term rental. C、strike down a controversial rule. D、urge users to vote against Airbnb.(2)、What is the negative consequence of Airbnb on San Francisco?A、It shrinks the living space of middle-class families. B、Users are taken advantage of by the service financially. C、It makes the house market more competitive. D、It indirectly leads to high house rental price.(3)、The housing crisis in San Francisco results from ____.A、explosion of the living cost B、its geographic characteristics C、generosity of local enterprises D、inflow of migrant population(4)、The author's attitude toward Proposition F is ____.A、objective B、supportive C、negative D、indifferent -

In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It's clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image.
I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit—I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don't understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels.
When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.
What's interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn't lead to happiness.
Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don't suddenly become "happy" people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That's because experiences are more easily combined with a person's identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.
Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through "things" are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It's natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn't tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don't have to break the bank to send a message about who you are.
Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
(1)、What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?A、The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself. B、The author agrees to spend money on material things. C、The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels. D、The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.(2)、Leaf Van Boven's studies showed that ____.A、traveling changes a person's identity greatly B、people dislike those who love luxuries C、experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries D、luxuries have a negative effect on people's happiness(3)、What is the author's advice on expressing oneself?A、Be selective about designer labels. B、Create your own personal unique style. C、Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D、Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg's.(4)、The main purpose of the article is to ____.A、persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries B、prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life C、tell how to express yourself through appearances D、report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness -

"Can we eat this one, Dad?" my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We're on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She's pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen (致幻剂). I have a firm "tell them the truth and be as precise as possible" philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don't think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.
Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I've experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.
Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I've got myself a partner for life.
It's not all easy—but sometimes that's the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I've found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she'll understand that things don't come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there's going to be a time when I'll end up on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I'm okay with this, and I'm hoping that by then she'll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.
(1)、What does the father imply by saying "I've got myself a partner for life."?A、It is rewarding to learn new skills. B、Skiing has become his lifelong hobby. C、He will explore more with his daughter. D、His daughter will accompany him forever.(2)、Why does the father start learning to play the piano?A、To prove it is never too old to learn. B、To set a good example for his daughter. Practicing gratitude can increase feelings of happiness and life satisfaction while decreasing depressive symptoms. To start improving your gratitude skill, try the following gratitude challenges.
Reflect on the gifts of hardship. There is no question that life can be challenging, as things don't always turn out the way we'd hoped. It may seem difficult to reflect on challenging times and find a reason to be grateful, but in making our pain purposeful, we can find meaning in the experience.
Express gratitude to others in writing. Send each of them a quick but considerate correspondence in the form of a handwritten note, email or even a thoughtfully composed text. Remind them of why they are special to you and how worthwhile they are in the world. As a result of your effort, those on the receiving end will experience the mood-boosting benefits of being appreciated. They won't be the only beneficiaries. Writing letters of gratitude has a positive effect on the author, increasing feelings of happiness while decreasing depression, studies have shown.
An important aspect of practicing gratitude regularly is becoming aware of opportunities throughout your day to express gratitude. Acknowledge at least two times a day that someone spreads a small act of kindness toward you. These acts could be a delivery person bringing a package to your door, a coworker offering assistance at work or your significant other getting you a coffee.
When you finish the challenges, hopefully you'll be inspired by the mood-boosting benefits and continue actively practicing gratitude on a daily basis.
A. Catch the chances of acting kindness.B. Notice and appreciate the small stuff.
C. Think of three people in your life that you truly appreciate.
D. All of us experience dilemmas at different points in our lives.
E. The benefits of thankfulness extend to both the giver and receiver.
F. Gratitude takes practice to realize its full potential, just like any other skill.
G. Once recognizing their efforts, you can consistently show your appreciation better.

On paper, hydrogen(氢气) looks like a dream fuel. In practice, things are trickier. Storing meaningful quantities of hydrogen gas requires compressing(压缩) it several hundred times. Transforming it into liquid state is another option, but one that requires cooling the stuff to -253℃. Either process requires rugged tanks. Over time, hydrogen gas can pass slowly into metals, weakening them and potentially causing cracks. Tanks must be built from special materials designed to resist this breakdown.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute, led by Marcus Vogt, think that supplying hydrogen as goop(糊状) offers a way around some of its limitations. They have been experimenting with a chemical compound that can be pumped into a container and then persuaded to give off its hydrogen on demand.
Their invention, which they nickname "powerpaste", looks like toothpaste. Its main ingredient is magnesium hydride(氢化镁), a compound that when introduced to water, reacts with it to form hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide(氢氧化镁). The escaped hydrogen can then be redirected into a fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to generate electric power. The magnesium hydroxide waste is emptied from the reactor automatically.
Dr Vogt's scheme offers several advantages over batteries, petrol and more conventional ways of handling hydrogen. One is the storage of energy than either batteries or petrol can manage. A second is ease of refilling, which is simply a matter of swapping an empty container of paste for a full one, and topping up the water, which is stored in a separate tank. A third advantage is that, unlike a battery, the paste does not gradually lose its stored energy if it is left on the shelf. Moreover, the paste itself is harmless, as are the reaction's by-products.
But there are still more to work through. Magnesium hydride reacts only slowly with water. To overcome this, Dr Vogt and his team have found a chemical additive that greatly accelerates the reaction. They have also found a way to ensure that the reaction can be controlled precisely enough to supply only as much hydrogen as is needed at any given moment.
(1)、Which of the following best explains "rugged"underlined in paragraph 1?A、Creative. B、Fragile. C、Tough. D、Enormous.(2)、What can we know about the invention according to paragraph 3?A、Magnesium hydride mixed with water releases hydrogen. B、Several chemical reactions occur in the same tank. Piper is encouraged to peck(啄) at the sand beach but gets wet through with water from a wave. Discouraged by the terrible wave, she hopes to get food from her mother but fails. After gathering up the courage again, she meets a hermit crab(寄居蟹) who shows her not to be scared of the ocean but to embrace it. Finally, she discovers the secret of the ocean and feeds herself even her family. It's a story about facing challenges and not being discouraged by failure. Like Piper, we can always find solutions and come out stronger than ever before.
Somehow Pixar manages to fit all of these into a five-minute-long short film, without using any spoken language and entirely by animation. Movements and personified facial expressions are what drive this story in this film. Much like the nature documentary, the continuous pulling of the shallow focus adds the sense of realism. The clean and clear animation allows for even the slightest micro-expressions to be picked up by the audience. And the music is consistent with Piper's emotions, making the audience feel the same way.
This film and lots of others by Pixar make us laugh and cry all the time. By fitting a simple story with simple characters, we are led through challenges to a satisfying conclusion for our characters. It's one of the best short films in a long time.

An 89-year-old man, Manfred Steiner, has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about:earning his PhD. And now he is a physicist.
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted and because he overcame health problems that could have affected his studies. "But I made it, and this was the most satisfactory point in my life to finish it, "he said.
When he was young, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein. But his mother and uncle persuaded him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the US soon after.
Steiner studied hematology(血液学) at Tufts University and biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a full professor and led the hematology department at Browns' medical school from 1985 to 1994. Steiner helped establish a research program in hematology at the University of North Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. "It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, that always stuck in the back of my head, "he said. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes.
Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his quantum mechanics class. But he became Steiner's adviser for his dissertation(学位论文) after realizing how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. "He has written many papers in medical science, more papers than I've written in physics, "Marston said. "One thing that's really true about Manfred is that he perseveres. "
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the US contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. His advice is:Do what you love to do.
(1)、Why did Steiner value his degree in physics?A、Because it solved his health problems. B、Because it was his long-pursued dream. C、Because it met his mother's expectation. D、Because it was inspired by Albert Einstein.(2)、What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A、Steiner's contributions to teaching. B、Steiner's researches after retirement. C、Steiner's achievements in hematology. D、Steiner's performances at Tufts University.(3)、What impressed Professor Marston most about Steiner?A、His taking undergraduate classes at 70. B、His writing more papers in physics. C、His sticking to becoming a physicist. D、His being a role model for Americans.(4)、Which of the following can best describe Steiner?A、Active and open-minded. B、Enthusiastic and easy-going. C、Intelligent and warm-hearted. D、Perseverant and hard-working. -
