During his life, Dr. James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught P. E. and wrote several books.  he never thought it very important, Dr. Naismith is today best known for one thing—he was one of the  (master) of basketball.

One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Because of heavy snow, the students could not go outside. He told James that they needed a sport that the boys could play indoors and gave him two weeks to think of something.

It was the very last day that James came up with his idea. The "birth of basketball" is said to be on December 21, 1891, two teams from the school played the (sweat) game. It was quite different from the basketball games of today. It had nine players on each team, and soccers (design) for students instead of basketballs. Soon after, the game changed to five players on each side, (challenge) each other on the court.

 (extreme)to our sadness, Dr. Naismith did not live to see basketball become the worldwide game as it is today. However, in 1936, just three years before his death, basketball became  Olympic sport at the games in Berlin.

When Wilma Rudolph was four years old, a deadly illness made her left leg useless. She had to wear an iron leg brace (固定器). Her doctors told her she would never 1  like a normal person without the brace. 2  she was fortunate in having a mother who encouraged her to have faith and 3 .

In 1957, Wilma went to Tennessee State University, where she met a 8  named Ed Temple. He trained her so well that in 1960 she went to the Olympic Games in Rome. There she 9  a German girl named Jutta Heine, the greatest woman runner of the day. Wilma had just won two Olympic gold medals both in the 100-metre sprint (短路) and the 200-metre sprint. Then came the 400-metre relay. It would be Wilma 10  Jutta. When the third runner handed the baton (接力棒) to Wilma, she was so excited that she 11  it, and Wilma saw Jutta taking off down the track. It was impossible that anybody could catch this girl. But Wilma did just that! Wilma Rudolph had earned her third Olympic gold medal in the 17th Olympic Games.

That day Wilma made history as she became the first woman to win three gold medals in the same Olympic Games. Later she said. "The success can't be reached without the 12 . I have spent a lifetime trying to share my story so that other young women have a chance to reach their dreams."

Elephant Transit Home

In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened (威胁) by changes in their natural habitats (栖息地), People are moving into the elephants' habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).

Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and take care of baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).

A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.

At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with others whom they have bonded with. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.

The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

"I would never have said to my mom, Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?" says Ballmer. "There was just a complete gap in taste."

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in different orbits (轨道).

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve (包含) a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, "To my mother, my best friend."

But family experts warn that the new equality (平等) can also result in less respect for parents. "There's still a lot of strictness and authority (权威) on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening," says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. "In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents."

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the1960s, as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic (民主) process that encourages everyone to have a say.

"My parents were on the ‘before' side of that change, but today's parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after' side," explains Mr. Ballmer. "It's not something easily achieved by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now."

My family lives in Texas. I was born and brought up in Texas and I am a student of the University of Texas. However, around my second year in law school, I wanted to make a great change, which was almost unheard of for Texans: I wanted to leave!

I realized this after completing my first-year internship (实习期). I knew I wanted something different and my chance came during the 2011 Super Bowl (撖榄球超级大赛) in Dallas. A snowstorm blanketed the entire city in snow and thousands of people were gathered. I overheard (偶然听到) that StubHub, a big company from a great city, San Francisco, was throwing a party next door to my hotel. I thought if I could get an internship, I could leave for the summer and at least see what it was like. Yes, it was a huge leap. I told myself I was ready.

There was just one problem: I wasn't invited to the StubHub party. But you know I'm the type of person who goes for something she wants. Needless to say, I crashed the party and found my way to the president. I kindly introduced myself and then asked if they had a legal internship program. Guess what? They accepted my request to be a legal intern, even though there was no such program.

The legal department didn't have a long-lasting position for me. However, I got many other chances to be a legal intern in other companies. That experience has shaped my life. Working for a great company in San Francisco, I'm more than happy for making my decision to leave Texas.

By leaving Texas, I learned that it is so much more rewarding to try the unfamiliar than to stay in the comfort zone. Exploring the unfamiliar is how you'll understand what fits your life. I say, dive in head-first.
