When speaking English, we usually translate words from our native language in our head and it takes us a lot of time just to speak a simple sentence. ? Do you want to speak English fluently and naturally? The following steps will help you.

    Step 1:

Think small first. I mean think in words, only simple words. The learning of your mother tongue starts with simple words like "dad""table""blue" and so on. . Try to say everything you see in English, only English. Later, in a conversation, the picture of a real table will directly remind you of the word "table".

    Step 2: Think in sentences

This step needs more time and effort. But it's worth it. , such as "It's a table. ""I have a table. ""The table is blue. ", etc. Just do it step by step and day by day. Don't jump to long sentences if you're a beginner. Otherwise, you'll be let down.

    Step 3: Think in conversations

. Some suggested topics may be your daily activities: family, friends, school, dream, favorites, and something similar. When you are sure that you can express a complete thought, make conversations with others.

    A. Think in words

    B. Try to say long sentences

    C. Just try doing this in English

    D. Does this sound familiar to you

    E. Speak English as much as possible

    F. Start with simple and short sentences

    G. Make conversations with yourself first

If you are fond of learning languages, you must start learning Chinese. English is the most widely spoken language in the world and it is a more powerful language in all fields. But it is expected that Chinese, which is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN), will be the most important language in the coming years. What are the reasons behind the rapid spread of this language and why should you learn it?

My desire to learn languages was the reason why I studied many Latin languages and in the process, I deepened my knowledge of the languages and literature. However, I did not feel self-sufficient (自给自足的) from this knowledge. I gained a lot of information about the Western world. But my thinking was always about Asian civilizations. I always felt I needed to learn Chinese to be a global citizen because "without learning Chinese, we see with one eye".

My contact with many international organizations and government institutions (机构) made me believe that Chinese is one of the most important languages of our time. After visiting the world's most celebrated capitals such as Paris and London, I discovered that Chinese language can be seen everywhere in these places. In the subway in Paris, you will hear instructions in French, English and Chinese. In London, for example, the Chinese language was introduced for instruction in schools.

China is an important political (政治的) and economic country because it is making great economic progress that has never been seen before. The world is watching China with great surprise, and this peaceful Chinese rise makes us decide to focus on learning the Chinese language and knowing more about Chinese culture.

To be a global citizen these days, I would advise you to learn Chinese. It will add more beauty to your life and allow you to better understand Chinese civilization.

(1)、What can we learn about languages in the future according to the first paragraph?
A、Some of them will disappear. B、More official languages will be added to the UN. C、English will still have an advantage over others. D、Chinese language will probably be second to none.
(2)、What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the author?
A、He realized the necessity of learning Chinese. B、He got bored with learning Latin languages. C、He was doing a research about Chinese language. D、He was satisfied with his knowledge of language learning.
(3)、What do the examples in Paragraph 3 show?
A、Paris is a wonderful capital city worth a visit. B、Chinese learning is very popular in schools in London. C、People in some western countries like speaking Chinese. D、Chinese language is playing an important role in the world.
(4)、What mainly causes Westerners to start learning Chinese according to the text?
A、The rise of Chinese economy. B、Their love for language learning. C、The long history of Chinese civilization. D、Their curiosity about Asian culture.

    My Best Teaching Experience

Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.

Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.

About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.

He had been in so much trouble over the years.He expected his teachers to know about his past;about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.

One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, "Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week's suspension.

To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

You probably know that exercise is the key to treating depression (沮丧), but a bigger fact remains: You don't feel like exercising. Here are some tips to help you start exercising.

    Change your view of "exercise".

Forget "exercise". Instead think: "being active" or "having fun". Besides,it gives you a bigger emotional (情感上的) benefit.

Taking part in physical activities with others supports you in doing those activities. Ask friends what activities they're doing or they would like to do, and join them. You can also find a personal trainer, join an exercise group or go to a class.

    Keep moving throughout the day.

Sitting is the new smoking.  Try to keep exercising throughout your day. If you have a desk job, get up and walk around.Every 20 minutes stretch (伸展) your hands, arms and back or more frequently, if you can.

    Take exercise outside.

Nature has a great effect on your mood and it can relax you. Even just looking at images of lakes and trees helps.  Or walk on a treadmill (跑步机) by a window.

    Set a goal.

When you connect your exercise to a longterm goal, it helps your brain forget the discomfort and makes your exercise more satisfying.Find out what's truly important to you.

    A. Do exercise with others.

    B. In other words, it's bad for you.

    C. Sign up and go to exercise classes.

D It's a lot easier to do something simple.

    E. Remind yourself of your goal regularly.

    F. Take a walk around your neighborhood or a local park.

    G. This increases your chance of actually moving your body.

Many cities and towns have laws that require people to recycle paper and plastics. Now some state and local governments have passed laws that require citizens to recycle their food waste as well. California and Vermont have statewide laws about recycling food waste that apply to businesses and homes. The process of recycling food waste and turning it into usable soil is called composting (堆制肥料).

Food waste that can be composted includes fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells. Garden waste such as stems and leaves can also be composted. Meat, fish, and dairy food waste cannot be recycled.

According to environmental groups, composting reduces the amount of trash going into landfills (垃圾填埋池), and composted waste holds a wide range of nutrients. When compost is added to the soil in gardens and fields, it helps crops grow.

Reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills is one reason why cities and states are passing food-waste recycling laws. "Our landfills are far from enough for the creation of new ones is shrinking." Renee Crowley, a project manager said.

Officials in Seattle, Washington, say that food waste makes up 30% of the trash going into landfills, and they are looking to reduce that percentage. That city has a law requiring people to recycle food waste. It is banned from all garbage. There is a fine for people who put it into regular garbage.

Crowley points out that even in cities where food recycling is not a law, there are often places where citizens can drop off their food waste for composting. Many schools and colleges have also started composting programs.

Those who are against food-recycling laws say that the composting process is costly. In addition, it can be difficult for people who live in apartments to store their waste because they don't have access to outside storage bins. Patti Ferguson from Orange County, California, told her local newspaper that she thought an indoor container containing food waste would get smelly.

(1)、What do we know about composting from the text?
A、It is cheap to compost food waste. B、Not all food waste can be reused. C、Not all soil can be composted. D、It is usually processed in empty landfills.
(2)、What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A、Ways of keeping nutrients in the soil. B、Ways of reducing the amount of trash. C、Benefits of recycling food waste. D、Examples of different useful nutrients.
(3)、In Seattle throwing food waste into garbage is____.
    A、illegal B、shameful C、required D、acceptable
(4)、Patti Ferguson's attitude towards food-recycling laws is probably____.

Dancing to loud music in open spaces has been a popular way for many middle-aged and elderly Chinese people to relax and exercise. But public dancing has long been complained about because of the noise it makes.

Recently, with the help of a new device, people living near Gumei Population Cultural Park in Shanghai can now better enjoy themselves in public dancing without causing trouble for others with the loud music.

Set in a white box, the device is an amplifier that can send sound in a certain direction. Using new technology, the device controls the sound in a fan-shaped area in front of the speaker. People outside the area can hardly hear any sound.

"The device is age-friendly and it's easy to use," said Li Honglin from the company that made the device. The device is locked when not in use and the dancers take turns to keep the key.

Zhang Fengling, who lives in a community next to the park, said she's glad she can now open her windows in the evening.

Gu Xinzhen, 92, who has been dancing in the park for over ten years, said the music from the new speaker is not as loud as before, which makes dancing a little less fun, but she is glad to do something for a better living environment.

Five public dancing locations in the city have also used the device. What's more, in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, over 1,000 public dancing locations have used similar technology. "The technology will be introduced to more places," Li said.

My family and I recently went to Australia, to see my grandparents. But before we visited them, we went sightseeing along the Great Ocean Road, on the Australian coast.

Dad had planned to drive, but even though he was used to driving miles without getting exhausted, he then read on the website that the road wouldn't be an easy drive. Anyway, we thought he deserved to enjoy the fantastic views too, which he couldn't do as our driver. So instead, we booked discount bus tickets and off we went.

Our first stop was where wild kangaroo lived — and Dad and I were taking a walk when a big one appeared! For a moment, it seemed to consider coming towards us, which made me a little nervous — but then it went off along the road and into the bushes.

That wasn't the only wildlife we saw. I thought it unlikely we'd see famous Koala bears during our short visit. In fact, at our next stop, we saw roughly six million in that area! Sadly, some gum trees they were in had very few leaves left, which people told us was because of the Koalas, although I'd read that lack of water is indeed the problem.

Dad had booked a campsite for the night, with ready-made tents — for an adventure! I wasn't sure about that, but they were really luxury tents, within walking distance of some famous rocks and other places we hoped to visit. However, Dad also said the sounds of wild creatures would help us sleep. That sounded worrying — until the "wild creatures" turned out to be frogs! So I was embarrassed by my fears and kept awake by the frogs! But we had fun making meals together.

In fact, this whole trip was fantastic!

Mr Swales was talking about what people do, and wanted to find out what his students wanted to be when they grew up. Mr Swales was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row burst out laughing.

Shirley yelled, "Jodie's daddy is a garbageman! Pee-yoo!" Everybody in the class laughed out loud except Jodie. She felt her face turn bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses. Mr Swales was angry. He almost never raised his voice, but now he did.

"Silence! I want everybody quiet this instant."

The laughter stopped immediately. "You should be ashamed of yourselves," Mr Swales said. "Being a garbageman, I mean, a sanitation engineer, is a difficult and extremely useful job. We should all be grateful to Mr Harris. Where would we be without him? Up to our ears in garbage, that's where. How would you like that?"

"Pee-yoo!" somebody said. A few kids started laughing again.

"It's not funny," Mr Swales went on. "Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all owe Jodie an apology. And after that, you're all going to write Jodie's father, Mr Harris, a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us." Everybody moaned (抱怨). Everyone said sorry to Jodie, but Jodie could tell they didn't really mean it.

Her face was burning red and she felt like crying.

Mr Swales came to her and said, "Let's go out in the hall, so we can have a private talk." Jodie couldn't hold back any more. She started crying out in the hall. "I'm sorry this happened," he said. "But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of. There's nothing wrong with being a garbageman… a sanitation engineer, absolutely not."

These days, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. Although it sounds strange, there's science behind the act of tree-hugging.

A study in 2021 (report) that the act of tree-hugging can increase oxytocin (催产素). It's a hormone responsible for (feel). The (high) the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to increase in oxytocin.

Another hormone  (call) cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production,  makes us feel better.

Although the activity is (help) to us, it's important to keep in mind that we shouldn't hurt nature while doing it. Trees often hold valuable ecosystems. Many small creatures live on the tree and they are too small to be seen. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees—just like how you hug a friend!

There are other ways to turn to nature to help with your stress, such as forest bathing  water healer. You can stand or sit  a forest and close your eyes to listen to all the sounds around you, or you can sit beside the water to  (simple) enjoy the sounds.

It is not always easy to keep a conversation going in English. You might not be sure about what to say. Or maybe you are afraid that your pronunciation is not good. So how can we continue a conversation in English?

    Listen and follow up

First, remember the importance of listening. Listen to the other person attentively, so that you can ask a follow-up question. For example, let's say the other person tells you, "I just got back from a trip to Canada." Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite place there? How was the food there?

Avoid simple "yes" or "no" questions

If you want to keep a conversation going, it's a good idea to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no". If the other person asks you a "yes" or "no" question, try to give a longer answer to help keep the conversation going. For example, a friend might ask, "Hey, have you seen the new Star Wars movie?" You could just answer, "No, I haven't." You could answer, "No, but I plan to see it soon. How about you?"

Do not worry about your pronunciation. If your pronunciation is a little different, the other person will still understand your message if you try speaking slowly and clearly. When you are traveling in an English-speaking country and have some free time, be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy.

    A. Or, you could say more.

    B. Be brave and practice often.

    C. You can try the following ways.

    D. Then you may make a new friend.

    E. Why did you choose the destination?

    F. Correct your pronunciation if possible.

    G. You can continue with a question using where, what, why, or how.

We all may know someone we consider to be a picky eater, who tends to dislike some common food regularly and causes social embarrassment when ordering at restaurants. But for some people with picky eating can actually have a serious disorder, and clinical definitions (临床定义) of picky eating behaviors often include people who only consume around 20 different kinds of foods for a long period of time.

"Having restricted diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies (营养缺乏) as well as health problems like heart disease, poor bone health and dental issues," explained Lorenzo Stafford, one of the authors on the latest study. "There is also a social cost because normally enjoyable moments between family members can easily turn into stressful, anxious, and conflict-causing situations when picky eaters feel ashamed or pressured to eat certain food."

A new research focused on the effect of plate color on food attraction for picky eaters. The experiment was based on a study from 2018 which looked at the way different colored food bowls affected a person's sense of taste.

Using a design similar to the 2018 research, the new experiments had participants rate the sweetness, saltiness and overall desirability of a snack food eaten from different colored bowls. In this instance the snack was salt and vinegar potato crisps consumed from either a red, blue or white bowl. Around 50 participants were recruited (招募) and classified as either picky or non-picky eaters based on a standard questionnaire.

The results showed picky eaters considered the snack to be saltier when it was eaten from the red or blue bowl compared to the white bowl, and picky eaters found the snack less desirable when eaten from the red bowl.

It is worth mentioning that a recent survey estimated nearly one in five American adults could be classified as picky eaters. So exploring ways to help these people better eat more types of foods could result in valuable health outcomes.

(1)、Which of the following may be a picky eater?
A、Tony who only has vegetables for losing weight. B、Kate who ate only some bread this morning. C、Lily who likes only a small range of dishes. D、Lucy who often orders little at restaurants.
(2)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A、Potential results of picky eating. B、Moments that are ruined by picky eaters. C、Health problems caused by picky eating. D、Quotes of Lorenzo to support the research findings.
(3)、What is the finding of the new research?
A、Bowls of different colors affect appetite of eaters. B、Blue color bowls can make the food saltier for eaters. C、The color of the bowl can change the taste of the dishes. D、Food in red bowls seems less attractive to picky eaters.
(4)、What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A、To show the ways of improving people's appetite. B、To call on researchers to help picky eaters try a wider variety of foods. C、To encourage us to raise picky eaters' awareness of healthy eating. D、To stress the importance of reducing picky eaters' anxiety and stress.

Are flash floods becoming more severe? Natural disasters are generally getting worse, and that's true for floods, too.

As climate change warms the atmosphere, extreme rainfall is rising, which increases the risk of flash floods. Heavy precipitation (降水) events are predicted to increase by 2 to 3 times the historical average. The Federal Emergency Management Agency expects the nation's flood plains to expand by 45 percent by the end of this century, as the agency reported in a recent study. A study in early 2021 found that increased precipitation, resulting partially from climate change costs the US an additional $2.5 billion each year in flood damage. And some studies show that flood frequency was increasing in the Mississippi River valley and across the Midwest in the last century, as well as in the Northeast over the past 50 years.

There are several steps you can take to prepare for flash floods.

First, know the level of risk by looking at flood maps. You may be required to have flood insurance if you live in a high-risk area.

Pay attention to flash flood watches, which the National Weather Service (NWS) issues to indicate when conditions could result in flash floods. People in these areas should be ready to take action—particularly if the NWS announces a flash flood warning. That's issued when flash floods are approaching and, at that point, people should immediately leave the area.

But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don't drive through flooded streets—it's difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can fall down. If flood-waters cause your car to lose control, abandon it and seek the higher ground. Rapidly rising water can sweep the vehicle away. Know your surroundings and head to the higher ground, and listen to the radio updates when in a flood.

It's also important to develop an emergency preparedness plan with your family or those you live with to have a few days' worth of resources.

(1)、Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1?
A、To confirm an idea. B、To conclude the text. C、To introduce a topic. D、To express some doubts.
(2)、How does the author support the theme of the second paragraph?
A、By analyzing causes. B、By listing relevant data. C、By describing processes. D、By making comparisons.
(3)、What are the drivers especially advised to do in the text?
A、Buy insurance. B、Look at flood maps. C、Have an emergency plan. D、Avoid the flooded streets.
(4)、Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A、What Is a Flash Flood? B、Do Flash Floods Need Controlling? C、How Do We Prepare for Flash Floods? D、Are Flash Floods Becoming More Severe?

Most of us need to heal (治愈) once in a while. For some of us, the hardest part of healing is simply to believe that it's possible.

Years ago, I was watching my oldest son practice free throws. The boy was good. He made a dozen shots through the net without a miss.

"How do you do that?" I said.

"Before I release (放开) the ball," he said, "I see it in my mind going through the net. I see it in my mind to make it happen."

I loved those words. It struck me that they might also be said for healing. We need to believe healing can happen and picture it in our minds to see it in reality.

My late husband, the coach who taught the boy to shoot free throws, was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. With a firm belief that healing was possible, he stretched those six months into four years. He worked hard to heal. At the same time, he also learned to accept and let go.

Healing begins when we let go of the past, accept the present and believe that all things are possible.

A few years ago, I had surgery for a broken ankle (脚踝) and spent eight weeks in a wheelchair. I expected to start walking again. That didn't happen.

I started going to physical therapy (治疗). I believed it could help, so I kept at it. Just when it seemed I'd never again walk as I did before, I did just that.

When hope fades away, we need to believe healing is possible. If we can see it in our minds and feel it in our hearts and believe it in our souls, we can let go of the past, accept the present and begin to move forward with our lives.

    Look. Can you see it?

(1)、Why did the author mention her son practicing free throws?
A、To show her son's basketball skills. B、To stress their close relationship. C、To explain how to shoot baskets. D、To tell why she connected believing with healing.
(2)、What can we draw a conclusion about the author's husband?
A、He could walk again after surgery. B、He was strong-willed. C、His cancer had been cured. D、He was a basketball player.
(3)、What does "it" refer to in the last paragraph?
    A、Hope. B、The past. C、Healing. D、The ball.
(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing this article?
A、To emphasize the importance of healing. B、To share her daily exchanges with family with us. C、To persuade us to believe in physical therapy. D、To encourage us to be positive about healing.
