LearnEnglish Podcast

This podcast is mainly for beginners and intermediate level learners. The length of a podcast is around 25 minutes but you can pause it anytime and continue whenever you want. The hosts of each episode are different.

Milo is a rescue dog, adopted by twenty-year-old Mary Swift. But the dog is also a rescuer.

One morning in November 2021, Swift was ready to go jogging as usual, with Milo following her happily. To her surprise, as soon as she opened the front door, Milo took off running towards the gate quickly. It was very unusual. He always ran after his master.

Outside the gate, Milo was looking around the neighborhood, looking a little alert. Suddenly, he ran straightly to the house across the street, barking loudly and sniffing around. China has once again proved its (able) to change the world with the "four great new inventions": high-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping. They're related to China's high-tech innovation (创新), has improved the quality of people's lives, according to a survey (make) by the Belt and Road Research Institute of Beijing Foreign Studies University.

"My wallet is no longer in use. I can buy and eat whatever I want simply with a fingertip on my phone," said university student, adding that "even pancake sellers are using mobile payment."

The bikes  (them) are not new, but the operating model of bike-sharing  (base) on satellite navigation system (卫星导航系统), mobile payment, big data and other high technologies.

I've had many opportunities to experience living in a foreign culture, but my first experience came in an unexpected place-my own country. When I was 20, I got an internship(实习职位)in New York City. It was my first time to1 outside of my home state of Texas.

With my move north came culture 2 . I grew up in a big city in Texas. But it was no comparison to the tightly 3 New York with their 8 million citizens. I was used to life at a 4 pace; New York moved fast. The saying is true-this city never 5 . I had to adjust.

If you miss one of the old friends you've lost touch with and think about reaching out to them, you may worry about whether it'll be just like old times, or uncomfortable and awkward. Here are some ways to help you avoid any awkwardness while reconnecting with an old friend.

Reach out through social media. Connect with them through social media, text message or other means if you're too nervous to make a phone call or to begin a meet up. Follow up on one of their most recent posts.

Show some love. If you're really happy to connect with your old friend, make it a point to communicate that to them. Sincere warmth can help lessen some of the awkwardness that may build up in a relationship.

Start conversation by bringing up a fun time you shared. It will transport you both back to that moment when you were close and help smooth over the "What are you up to now?" conversations that sound too rigid (死板).

Display your interest. As you chat with your friend, try to pay attention and ask follow-up questions.  Empathizing (共鸣) with them can help you connect with them and get to know who they are today. 

Move past conflicts. Don't talk a lot about your conflicts or the reasons why your friendship became less close. If it happens to come up naturally down the line, then feel free to address any possible hurt feelings. In the beginning, just focus on what you had in common and the good times you shared together.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) as underwater walls can help reduce the effects of hurricanes on coastal communities. This seems unbelievable. It is reported that scientists have discovered that coral reefs are even more effective than man-made sea walls under the water. However, coral reefs are especially easy to be influenced by climate change. Overfishing and pollution have also proved very dangerous to them. Since 1950, half of the world's coral reefs have already been lost. To protect our communities and keep sea ecosystems alive, we need to protect coral reefs right away.

Let's take a closer look at how coral reefs protect us from floods, and how scientists are 1restoring (修复) reefs.

The roles that coral reefs play as underwater walls have long been recorded by scientists. During a Category 3 hurricane in 2015 in Australia, the coral reefs effectively protected the eastern shoreline from flooding. In contrast, the western coasts without coral reefs suffered serious damage. The researchers observed that the shape of coral reefs can break the approaching waves. More recently, researchers at the University of Miami have reached the same conclusion. They used a special lab simulator (模拟装置) to recreate ocean conditions during a Category 5 hurricane. They found that coral reefs could reduce the impact of waves by up to 95 percent!

Because of higher ocean acidity (酸性) and temperature, coral reefs are disappearing and dying out. At the same time, climate change puts weakened coral reefs under more stress. The University of Miami researchers are testing to plant new coral reefs while others are actively looking for effective methods to reduce the acidity of sea water. The governments have also paid more attention to these actions and provided enough money for reef restoration. With these efforts, we may address climate threats to coral reefs and they can carry on protecting our communities.
