People who realize and master the art of small talk can use it to improve relationships. Small talk can lead to "big" talk — more important discussions. Using small talk, you can achieve big results. But many people do have fears that hold them back from making small talk.

For one thing, those who refuse to make small talk usually fear the unknown. When I was little, my mom said, "Don't talk to strangers!" For some people, that childhood fear of strangers continues into adulthood.

 Suppose you are at a business networking event and have checked out who is there and found potential (潜在的) conversation partners. You're ready to make your move, but there are butterflies in your stomach. You are too frightened to introduce yourself to total strangers. 

Consider a different situation for the next networking event you attend. To overcome your nervousness, you can think of yourself as an event's host and not its guest. As a host, you would introduce yourself to people you don't know and introduce them to others. You can play the role of the host even though you are not the actual host. Get in the habit of holding out your hand first and saying, "Hi, my name is ..."

 Another reason why people refuse to open their mouth is the fear of rejection（拒绝）. Anytime you open your mouth and speak, you risk rejection. If you never talk to people, you won't be rejected. But if you never talk to people, you will also be very lonely. The best way I've found to overcome the fear of rejection is to focus on how I feel when I am accepted.  

 So ask yourself: what do I have to lose? Nothing! What do I have to gain? Possibly everything! Think back to when you first met your best friend or any important person in your life. How did it all start? You probably started with small talk. 

If you're a girl between the ages of 7 and 17, and you're hoping to meet new friends, join the Circle of Friends Club, which offers a safe environment for young girls to meet friends of their own ages on the Internet.

 The site protects the email addresses of its members and allows girls to send mass emails to many friends at once. Since the club has members from everywhere, friends can be made locally, nationally or around the world. 

 It has a special interest search so that girls who are, for example, interested in sports can find other friends that have the same interest. Members can create their own page at Circle of Friends where they can introduce others to their family members or their friends.  

Those who would like to join the club need to pay $12 per year. At least you'll feel safe knowing that your daughter's privacy (隐私) is well protected here. There's also a short list of rules, and if the rules are broken, the member will not be accepted anymore.

 Rules are general: The club is only for girls who are between the ages of 7 and 17. You must stay active in the club — that is, you must send at least one letter to one of your pen friends every month. Anyone reported for using rude words in their letters will be banned.  

No one is allowed to put email addresses, last name, the phone number or the name of school in letters. It's also against the rules to ask a member to contact another member outside of the club. Every member needs to get the okay from their parents to become a member at the Circle of Friends Club.

Girls looking for friends won't find a safer site than the Circle of Friends Club. In addition, they'll have a chance to meet other girls from around the world, learn about their cultures, and start up friendships that could last forever.

 That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

The seller sighed, "Girl, why do you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?"

 I was really surprised after hearing that. 

Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little. I thought she was supposed to take care of me and love me.

On the way home, I thought in my head what I would say to my mother when I arrived home: " Mom, I'm sorry. I know it is my fault please forgive me …"

 Meanwhile, many memories came back into my mind.  

 When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired.

The Chinese film "The Battle(战役) at Lake Changjin" tells the story of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army taking part the war to help Korea(朝鲜)fight against the U.S. aggression (侵略).  No one is born a winner, People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. 

 I learned this lesson from a(n) 1  many years ago when I took the head 2  job at a school in Georgia. 

It was a tradition for the school's old team to 3 the new team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no 4 and they even didn't prepare for the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win, but disappointedly, we were defeated. I couldn't 5 I had got into such a situation. For most people, hearing the words "dinner's on the table" brings back memories of home-cooked meals shared with family. However, "Dinnertime" was once different and has experienced a series of evolutions.

Families didn't eat together in the evening before the 1700s. Family members would eat in shifts, setting up a small table outside, or by the fireplace. In colonial (殖民的) times, the midday meal — "dinner "— was the largest one, while "supper" was a smaller evening meal. That changed during the Industrial Revolution. Laborers began to eat a quick, lighter meal at midday, moving dinner to the end of the day as the main family meal. For families of all socioeconomic levels evening automatically became the time when everyone would be back at home together.

At present, flexible lifestyles, changing patterns of work-life balance have led to the appearance of a new kind of family dinner. A few clicks on the phone can bring people whatever their heart or stomach desires —Caribbean, Japanese, Italian and every other country's cuisine. This makes sense given the various dining preferences of the newest age group.

Regardless of who cooks the food, where it's eaten, and who you're eating with, the nightly tradition of sharing a meal while connecting with loved ones always stands strong.

When preparing fruit and vegetables, many people will peel (削皮) them. But often, it's not necessary.

Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of nutrition like vitamins. Not consuming enough of these nutrient-rich foods is linked to an increased risk of diseases. Eating 400g of fruit and vegetables a day, as the WHO recommends, is difficult to achieve for many people. So could consuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue by adding important nutrients to people's diets?

 They can certainly contribute. For example, nutritionally important amounts of vitamins and minerals are found in the peels of seven root vegetables: beetroot, field mustard, wild carrot, sweet potato, radish, ginger and white potato. And the US Department of Agriculture shows that unpeeled apples contain 15% more vitamin C, 267% more vitamin K, 20% more calcium and 85% more fibre than peeled apples. 

Another reason is the effect on the environment. According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, uneaten food, including peels, generates 8%-10% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. New Zealand alone reports an annual wastage of 13,658 tonnes of vegetable peels and 986 tonnes of fruit peels.

Given the nutrient content of peels and its contribution to food waste, why do people peel fruit and vegetables at all? Some must be peeled as the outer parts don't taste nice, are hard to clean or cause harm. Also, peeling may be a necessary part of the recipe, for example, when making mashed potato. But many peels, such as carrot and kiwifruit, are suitable to be eaten, yet people habitually peel them anyway. Some people peel fruit and vegetable because they are concerned about pesticides (杀虫剂) on the surface.

 If you want to find out more about fruit and vegetable peels and what to do with it, there is lots of advice online including help on how to deal with peels. With a little investigation and creativity, you can help to reduce waste and increase your fruit and vegetables intake. 

We all know the feeling—you want to check what someone you care about has been up to on social media (社交媒体), and suddenly you find you are refused. It's the start of mixed feelings—when did this happen? Did I do anything wrong? What are they trying to hide from me?

And that's what half of Chinese parents have to deal with when they try to browse (浏览) their children's WeChat Moments, also known as "Friends' Circle". According to a survey by Tencent, about 52 percent of WeChat users aged 18 to 29 block their parents on Moments. The young interviewees said that parents "are worried about everything", along with reasons such as fear of parents' disagreement, avoiding parents' nagging (唠叨), and protecting their private life. Xie Yun, a 26-year-old, said that while she didn't block her parents completely, they were in a specific group with which she only shared positive posts. "I don't want my parents to see failures in my life," she said. Once her parents saw a Moments picture of her hand getting burned while cooking, and they traveled all the way to her city to make sure she was all right.

The report also found that more than 49 percent of Chinese parents use WeChat as a main tool to communicate with their children. Roughly 36 percent of the parents who took the survey said they checked every post made by their children. When asked how they would respond to being blocked, some parents said they would start a conversation with their children to find out the reason, while others said they wouldn't care. And some parents just were shrewder than their kids in this hide-and-seek game online. "I didn't realize I was blocked until I compared what I could see on my phone to what my son's aunt could see," said Chen, a mother of a 27-year-old son. "I chose to remain silent on this and now I'm following my son's posts through his aunt."

The sun was rising when Daryl's delivery (递送) truck with goods reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before midnight.

Then he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. He stopped and found the lump was a girl. He tried shaking her awake but she wouldn't move, so he carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn't be run over (辗过) there. Now she was someone else's problem because he didn't have time to be a hero. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl still lying by the side of the road, he knew he couldn't leave her. Daryl put her into his truck and drove to the next town.

 An hour later he arrived at the police station. After explaining what had happened, he prepared to leave, but the policeman said he needed to make a report. Daryl knew it was impossible for him to get to Los Angeles on time now. 

Three hours later the report was done and the girl had recovered somewhat. She explained that she had fallen on the highway, weak from hunger. She also thanked Daryl for saving her life. Daryl told her that he had been happy to help, but as he left the police station he knew his boss wouldn't be happy.

Just as he was about to start the car, his mother called. "Have you seen?" she said, "a bridge collapsed two hours ago, the one that you drive over on the way to Los Angeles."

 Daryl's blood ran cold. If he had been on time, he would have been on that fallen bridge. Daryl realized how lucky he was.
