To mark the 14th International Chinese Language Day, which falls  April 20, Cape Town in South Africa witnessed the opening of a special exhibition: The Way of Type—Modernization of Chinese Typography (活版印刷). By (show) the development of fonts (字体), the exhibition gave visitors an overview of the modem development of Chinese characters.

Where does food waste go? In most countries around the world, it goes into landfills (垃圾填埋场). But not in South Korea. The country banned food waste in landfills nearly 20 years ago and today, it is turned into animal feed, fertilizers and fuel.

Around the globe, 1.4 billion tons of food is thrown away every year. The waste goes into landfills where it can pollute the land and water as well as releasing methane—a greenhouse gas—into the air. In fact, food waste is the third-largest source of methane in the US.

The system that is in place in South Korea keeps almost 100 percent of unused food out of landfills. While other cities and local governments have put similar plans in place, it is not done anywhere else on a country-wide basis.

There are two reasons why South Korea passed laws to carry out mandatory (强制性的) recycling of food waste. First, the country's cooking tradition of numerous small dishes resulted in large amounts of uneaten food. This food waste went into landfills. But the country's mountainous geography didn't allow for enough landfills to be built. That's why the government forced recycling of paper and plastic in 1995 but food waste continued to be buried in landfills. But it was the neighbors of these landfills that demanded that another solution be found due to the very unpleasant smell from rotting food. The government banned organic waste from landfills in 2005. Another law that was passed in 2013 banned dumping liquid food waste in the ocean.

The system is not free but most of the cost is absorbed by the country. People can buy yellow recycling bags that are picked up on the roadside and some local governments have placed autonomous food waste collectors that require residents to pay a weight-based fee by using cards.

The food waste is collected from the bins every day except Sunday. Some of it is used to make animal feed or fertilizers and some is used to make fuel.

Every morning in a city in Indonesia's far east, sleepy teenagers can be seen walk slowly and with heavy steps through the streets on their unwilling way to school.

It is not a scene from some sci-fi movie but a controversial experiment to get the day off to a much earlier start for the sleep-deprived (缺乏睡眠的) teens. The pilot project in Kupang has twelfth-graders at 10 high schools start classes at 5:30 am.

Authorities say the project is intended to heighten children's discipline. According to parents, though, their children are worn out by the time they get home. Schools in Indonesia generally start between 7:00 and 8:00 am. Teens in their school uniforms are now walking down dark streets or waiting for motorcycle taxis to get to school on time.

"It is extremely difficult and they now have to leave home while it's still completely dark. I can't accept this, for their safety is not guaranteed when it's dark and quiet." Rambu Ata, a mother to a 16-year-old, said, whose daughter Eureka now has to wake up at 4:00 am to get ready and ride a motorbike to school. "Now every time Eurek arrives home she is exhausted and falls asleep immediately."

At least one scholar seems to agree.

"It has no connection with the effort to improve the quality of education," Marsel Robot, an education expert from Nusa Cendana University. "In the long run, sleep deprivation could endanger the students' health and cause a shift in behaviour. They will only sleep for a few hours and this is a serious risk for their health. This also will cause them stress and they will release their stress by acting out."

A 2014 study published by the American Academy of paediatrics (儿科学) recommended that middle and high schoolers start classes at 8:30 am or later to allow enough time for sleep. The Kupang rule change was also challenged by local politicians, who demanded the government cancel what they called a baseless policy.

Abdullah was born in Terengganu, a state on the eastern coast of the Malaysian Peninsular, known for its beautiful tropical islands. Growing up on the coast, he felt a close bond with the ocean. After being adopted as a child, he would escape from his strict home to the seaside to free himself.

The local adults would consider him a strange diving instructor, "who spent his days in the water and spoke to corals (珊瑚) as if they were people". For a long time, he worked unknown to the public and at times in poverty. But it was this closeness to the sea that led him to study the marine (海洋的) environment, and later, earn a scholarship in Oceanography at the Florida Institute of Technology. With the travels across the globe that this research involved, Abdullah learned about the extensive degradation (退化) in the marine ecosystem. He was enthusiastic about the need to take action to restore the damaged and dying coral reefs.

Abdullah set up Ocean Quest Global in Malaysia in 2010, an environmental organization focusing on coral reef protection. It was buoyed by volunteers working throughout Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. Its founder has spent most of his life on the coral reefs of Malaysia, observing their behavior and life cycles, and conducting his own research.

In less than a decade, Abdullah's organization had expanded to several countries like Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines. It has over 800 trainers across the world, working on 180 islands, roost of them in Thailand. Most recently, the organization has been actively working on the restoration of Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh Island, Thailand. It is also building the first subtropical coral nursery in Egypt, reports the diving industry portal, ADEX Ocean Vision.

Bastille Day

Celebrated nationwide on 14 July, Bastille Day is the biggest and most important festival in the French calendar. It marks the day that Parisian civilians and peasants stormed the fortress (堡垒) and prison of Bastille. This caused events that would end the monarchy (君主制) and start the age of liberty and equality. Celebrations are held all over France, including large-scale public events and parties.

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Daniel, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.

Entering his room, Daniel found his younger brother Eric sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.

The next morning when Daniel got up, Eric was still sleeping soundly. Daniel was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.

After breakfast, Daniel took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches were clearly visible. Daniel shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Mr. Green's house. When he arrived, he was welcomed by Mrs. Green, who told him that Mr. Green had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.

"I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?" Daniel requested eagerly. "Of course. He should be home soon." Mrs. Green invited Daniel in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him. After half an hour, the door opened and in came Mr. Green. Having said hello to each other, Mr. Green and Daniel both sat down on the sofa.
