①The dragon is often the main character in Chinese celebrations. Dragon dances have been recorded at traditional celebrations since the Han Dynasty, while fire dragon dances began appearing in records during the Qing Dynasty. Some historians say fire dragon dances date back to （追溯到）the Ming Dynasty. Today, fire dragon dances can be seen all over China as a part of the Spring Festival celebrations.

④In Guizhou province, Dafang County Fire Dragon Dance falls on the ninth day of the first lunar month every year. Instead of lighting the dragon on fire, it has a colorful lantern that has an artistic design and is lit from within. Fireworks are laid on the ground to create a shiny performance around the dance route as dancers move around the town with their dragon.

Nine is an important number in Chinese culture because its Chinese pronunciation is jiu. That means"long". According to the Book of Changes（《易经》）, the number six is considered yin while nine is yang. The ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the Chinese calendar features two nines, so the day is given the Chinese name"Chongyang". 

When it comes to the Double Ninth Festival（重阳节）, two important plants, cornel（茱萸） and chrysanthemum（菊花）, have to be mentioned. 

The cornel is widely planted in the north and south of China. Ancient people believed that wearing the cornel on this day could help prevent（阻止）illness and avoid（避免）disasters（灾难）。 They also believed that the chrysanthemum could drive away bad luck and prevent people from getting a cold in late autumn. So, drinking chrysanthemum wine has always been a traditional customs at this festival. 

As time goes by, the festival has been given more meanings. In 1989, the Chinese government set it as a day for the elders to encourage（鼓励）all to respect（尊重）and love them, so as to build a beautiful and age-friendly society（社会）。

Face Difficulties Bravely and Make the Year Meaningful

My dear fellows, 

It's exciting that we are stepping into Grade 9. I know it will not be an easy year. . 

On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student from Tsinghua University, won the "Touching China 2024"Award. His story, from a young man who fights against heavy hardships to an encouraging character, has warmed many hearts. 

Born with great challenges, Pang lived a hard life when he was a child. His father has a serious mental illness. His mother's legs were cut off, so she can hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem since he was born. He went door-to-door borrowing money for his mother's illness. He also picked up waste things to make money and help pay off his family's debts(债务). However, he never lost hope. He always believed" Knowledge can change my life". 

In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with a very high score in the college entrance exam. At first, he was worried that he might let others down. But later, he found his interest in scientific research. He kept trying even when he failed many times. Although money is still the problem, he decided to depend on himself. That's why he said no to people who raised money for him. Instead, he asked Tsinghua University for grants(补助金) and won the prizes for good grades. His mother named him" Zhongwang", which means "the hope of everyone". She always told him to look forward to the future. Pang once said, "Mom smiles every day—why should I feel sad?"

Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctor's degree at Tsinghua. Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents(专利) for his inventions. His dream is to" serve the country through scientific research" and he works hard for this goal. His story lights the way for many people. 

As the award speech says:" You leave your hard times behind. You face life with a smile and move forward strongly. " Pang's journey shows us that if we are strong and keep hope, we can live up to what others expect of us and create our own bright future. 

The Mid-Autumn Festival is coming. In the past eighteen years, I (celebrate) the Mid-Autumn Festival with my family. We always celebrate it by (sit) together after dinner to share mooncakes in the moonlight. In Chinese culture, the moon is a symbol of brightness and gentleness, showing people's best wishes. As simple as it is, it gives (we) a chance to relax and enjoy being together. However, this will be the first year for me to spend the Mid-Autumn Festival  family members by my side. 

To help reduce some of the homesickness(思乡之情), my friends and I are planning to hold a full-moon-themed party in New York City's Chinatown(唐人街). My friends suggest this idea to me. I'm deeply (touch) because none of them are from Asian countries.  the party is a few days after the Mid-Autumn Festival, I'm still sure it will be fun. My heart is full of (excite) because I can't wait to show them how much fun this Chinese festival will be. 

As a newcomer to the US, I (real) miss my family a lot, but I know I have to be used to being away from them. It's part of growing up. At  same time, I'm looking forward to spending the Mid-Autumn Festival with my friends. Though we' ve only known each other for a month, I already love them like (relative). 

Finally, I got a part-time job at the local coffee shop. I had thought that the job would be easy. However, the fact was not what I had 1 . The customers were hard to please. There was always too much sugar, too little ice, or not enough milk. However, boring it was, after all, I still made it. 

One rainy day, Hank, one of my old customers, came in looking blue. I asked what the problem was and 2 we could help, but Hank wouldn't tell anything. He just said he felt like going to bed, pulling the quilts up over his head and staying there for a few years. I knew exactly how he felt. 

Before he left, I handed him a bag of his favorite type of doughnuts. He seemed 3 because he hadn't ordered anything. 

"It's my treat, " I told him. "Have a nice day. "

He smiled and thanked me before 4 back out into the rain.

A mind map is a tool that connects information around a central subject. It can help you make a knowledge bank to solve problems. A student recently said, "I thought mind maps would take a lot of time to do but in fact, it saves time.

How can you make a mind map?

Now follow these steps to make perfect mind maps. 

 Why? Because a start from the central place lets your brain spread out in all directions and express itself more freely and naturally. 

Use a picture for your central idea.  It helps you use your imagination. What's more, a central picture is more interesting. It helps to get your attention and makes you work excitedly as well. 

Connect your main branches（分支）to the central picture and connect your second-and-third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. You may wonder why. That's because your brain works by connection. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily. 

Use one key word every line. Every single key word can make you learn more clearly. 

Review and correct the mind map to make it better. Once you have finished the mind map, review it and make sure you can understand the notes you' ve taken.  To make it better, you can also add more with colors. 

A Chinese 2D animated film, "Nobody", has become a summer hit. It was firstly shown on August 2nd, 2025. By September 13, it had made over 1. 5 billion yuan, breaking the record for Chinese 2D animated films. It also got 8. 6 points on Douban, winning the hearts of millions of kids and adults. 

The film tells a warm story. The story follows a small pig monster(妖怪) who lives in a place called Langlang Mountain. He works hard for the Cave King, but doesn't know how to please the king and makes him angry. After losing his job, he decides to leave the mountain and teams up with three other small and nameless monsters. Together, they pretend(假装) to be the famous group from Journey to the Westand start a dangerous journey to grow and find their true selves. They grow from finding food to save villagers. A famous line says, "We may be nobodies in society, but we are important at home, " making people think about life. 

The film touches hearts because it shows the hardship of common people. The little monsters face big challenges and laugh at difficulties. Even though they are weak, they fight bravely. Many viewers say they see themselves in these characters. 

Nobody also stands out for its beautiful art style. Made by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, it uses traditional Chinese painting skills. The soft colors of ink-wash paintings and perfect brushwork create a special, dreamlike world. 

The movie also shows respect for Chinese culture. For example, it references (参考) the well-known 1986 TV show Journey to the Westand ancient buildings from Shanxi Province. All these make the story feel both old and new. 

Nobody is more than a movie. It brings joy and teaches us that everyone can be a hero. 

In a city of China, older people are going back to school for a very special class. It is a course called" Make Friends with AI". A young teacher named Li Xiaoyi started this class to help people like her own grandfather use modern technology. AI, or Artificial Intelligence(人工智能), is like a very clever computer program. Li teaches her students how to talk to an AI chatbot(聊天机器人) on their phones. This chatbot can answer questions and help with many daily tasks. For many of the older students, it is their first time to learn about AI, and they are very excited. 

Li knows that teaching older people is different from teaching young students. She must be very patient and move slowly. In every lesson, she repeats the instructions carefully. She also uses simple language instead of difficult tech words. For example, when she wants them to open a menu, she tells them to find and click the three dots(点) on the screen. She also teaches them to make the words on their phone bigger so they can read more easily. Her goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and show them that technology can be friendly and not frightening. 

The students learn many useful things. They practice asking the AI for delicious recipes(食谱), planning a fun trip to another city, or getting simple health advice. Some students even chat with the AI when they feel a bit lonely. It's like having a new friend who is always there to talk to. The students love what they can do. One 68-year-old man now uses AI to make beautiful online postcards from his old holiday photos. Another student puts animated(动画的) animals into her travel videos. This special class helps the community's older people feel happy and connected to the world today.

How I learn from traditional Chinese festivals

Traditional Chinese festivals are like precious treasures, carrying rich culture meanings. 

On the evening of August 16, 2025, doctoral student Pang Zhongwang from Tsinghua University was named a" Touching China"2024 Awardee. His story is really inspiring. 

Pang was born into a poor family. He met many difficulties. His father has a mental illness. His mother was born with a disease in her spine(脊椎) and her legs were cut off, so she can hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem when he was born. He went from door to door to borrow money for his mother's treatment. He also collected rubbish to pay off the family's debts. (债务) But he was always optimistic (乐观的). He believed that "knowledge changes life". 

In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University's Department of Precision Instruments with a very high score. At first, he was worried that he might not do well, but he found his interest in research. He kept going even after many failures. He didn't accept the money from others. Instead, he used school scholarships. His mother named him" Zhongwang", which means "the hope of all". She taught him to always look forward. "Mom smiles every day— why should I feel sad?" he once said.
