We've talked about snails (蜗牛) and their slow move . But much of the time snails don't move at all. They're in their shells (壳)—sleeping .

    Hot sun will dry out a snail's body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into its shell and closes the opening with a thin cover .Then it goes to sleep. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So whenever it rains, it goes inside its shell house and goes to sleep. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It can take a short sleep. Or it can sleep for days at a time .And it spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.

    In spring the snail wakes up .Its body, about three inches long, comes out of from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. It can't see very well. Its eyes ,at the ends of the top feelers (触角)are very weak . But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to the new greens. Then the snail's little mouth goes to work.

    A snail's mouth is no longer than the point of a pin(针) . Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are so small that you can't see them. But they do their work. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out. And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

    Mostly, a snail looks for food at night .But on cloudy days it eats in the daytime. It eats all day long. A snail can go on eating for hours and never feel full.

    Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every day I open my books in class and start lessons. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or print?

    Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and, since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could only be produced one at a time by hand. As a result, they were expensive and rare. And because there weren't many books, few people learned to read.

    Then printing was invented in China. The first printed books were made by putting ink on a wooden block and holding the paper against it. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread(传播) quickly, in a way that can be compared with the introduction of the Internet in the 20th century.

    But will books be needed in the future? Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than found in books, and information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines such as MP4 players. These machines are smaller and lighter than books so that they can be carried very easily.

    Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced by computers one day? No, I don't think the Yao Ming poster on my bedroom wall will ever be replaced by a computer two metres high!

    There are many ways to save the environment if you would like. In this passage, you can find some ways.

    Plant more trees. Choose a right ground your house or workplace. Unless there's any rule stopping you growing trees in that , go ahead and grow trees. Plant a tree every month and  your friends and classmates to join you. More and more trees have been planted. to your hard work, you have more and more green land.

    Walk more and drive less. Choose to walk  than drive your car. Walk or ride a bicycle to work if it's not very far. Not only cycling but walking is good exercise. And each time you avoid using your car, you're doing something  to cut down airpollution. You are saving fuel, saving money and keeping fit as well.

    Save water. Water  very important for living things. It's we who use and pollute it. The simplest way to save water is turning water taps after use. When you visit a beach, make sure that you don't  waste around. Do not pollute rivers by dropping garbage or other waste. Water is so precious, so we waste or pollute it.
