Spring Festival (春节) is the most important festival in China. It usually comes in January or February. People call it "Chinese New Year" too. 

Before the Spring Festival, people are very busy. They clean their houses to sweep away bad luck. They buy new clothes, food and flowers. Families get together from different places. They make dumplings together. Dumplings are a traditional food for the Spring Festival. 

On New Year's Eve, families have a big dinner. They eat dumplings, fish, chicken and other delicious food. After dinner, they watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. Some people stay up late to welcome the new year. 

On New Year's Day, people wear new clothes. They visit their relatives (亲戚) and friends. They say "Happy New Year!" to each other. Children are very happy because they can get hongbao from their parents and grandparents. 

Spring Festival is a time for family reunion and happiness. Everyone loves the Spring Festival.

Do you feel comfortable when cold winter comes? Many people say they feel uncomfortable in very cold weather. But you should feel lucky because you don't live in Siberia (西伯利亚).

In many places in Siberia, the winter is always very long and it's very, very cold! It starts to snow in November and the snow won't leave until May. The temperature is usually about -25℃, but it's sometimes much colder than that. When it's -35℃, children can't go to school, but grown-ups still go to work! And in some areas, the temperature can drop to -70℃. In spring and summer it is often cloudy, and it often rains a lot, and people don't often see the sun.

You may think there is nothing but ice and snow in Siberia. In fact, many people live there and there are lots of forests. Many tall trees grow there. People living there wear a lot of warm clothes. All the houses have heating, so it's never cold inside. In winter, people close the windows to stop the wind from getting in, and they don't open them again before spring comes.

There are many wonderful traditional festivals in China. Chinese people have celebrations to welcome them. Let's learn about three important ones. 

The Spring Festival is on lunar January 1st. People put up the Spring Festival couplets. They eat dumplings and have a big meal happily. Children get lucky money on this day. Finally, all the Chinese around the world watch the TV show for the Spring Festival and welcome the Chinese New Year together. 

The Lantern Festival falls on lunar January 15th. People hang red lanterns. They all like red because it is a lucky color. Then family members get together to have a big meal. They also eat tangyuan or yuanxiao on that day. At night, children watch lantern shows and guess the riddles on lanterns. 

The Mid-Autumn Festival is on lunar August 15th. People eat mooncakes and enjoy the moon. At night, they also have a big dinner together. They eat delicious food and have some drinks. Then they talk with each other happily. 

Traditional festivals are important days for Chinese. People all enjoy the family time and have great fun on these days every year. 

In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar is Layue. 

Laba Festival is the first festival in this month. Do you know when it is?  From this day on, people begin to prepare for the Chinese New Year. People like eating hot Laba porridge (粥) with eight things in it. Laba garlic (腊八蒜)  is another traditional food in Layue.  It is welcome in the north. People like eating it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year.

 It is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. People usually offer some foods to the Kitchen God first. They think he will look after the family all the year.  It shows sweeping away something bad of the old year and welcoming a fresh start.

Now, the last thing to do is to welcome the coming Spring Festival.

There are four seasons in a year, and each season has  (it) special features.

Spring is a season of new life. The snow  (melt), and nature wakes up after the long winter. Warm rain falls on the forests and fields. Plants start  (grow), and birds come back from the south. Farmers begin to work their land. It is exciting  (take) a trip in the countryside in springtime.

Summer is bright and noisy. The weather is hot, and the sun shines  (bright) in the clear, blue sky. Cicadas sing loudly. There is often thunder and lightning in the afternoon. Many people like to go to the beach and swim in the sea. It is nice  (eat) ice cream or fresh fruit in summer.

Autumn is beautiful and full of colour. The weather is cool and dry. Leaves turn brown, red or yellow and start  (fall) from the trees. Squirrels gather food for the cold winter. Farmers are busy with the harvest. It is great  (go) on a family outing at this time of year.

Winter is peaceful and fun. It is cold and snowy in many places. Bears and snakes find warm places  (sleep) through the winter. Children love winter because they love to play in the snow.
