Once upon a time, a little horse lived in a small village with his mother. One day, his mother asked him to take a bag of grains (谷物) to the village on the1 of the river.

In ancient China, people did not sign important papers with a handwritten name. Instead, they used a carved (雕刻的) seal. A seal is a small stone block. When you press it, it leaves a red mark. This mark is special and only belongs to its owner. Now, Mr. Huang is making seals in a modern way.

During his free time, Huang likes to carve stones. He carves small symbols, English letters, and animals into stones. A few years ago, his daughter suggested he should show his seals online. Soon, his works became very popular on the Internet.

One of Huang's most famous works is a seal with a panda and an English name. Each seal takes him a whole day to carve. He plans the design (设计图样) carefully so that every line is perfect, whether it is a letter or a tiny panda paw.

Huang's creations are personal and steeped in tradition. Some seals put English letters and dragons or phoenixes together for wonderful gifts. Other seals show warm and funny designs.

For Huang, these seals are more than just things to sell. He sees them as a bridge between traditional Chinese art and modern life. In the past, seals were serious tools for emperors and officials. Now, these new-style seals are fun gifts for tourists and local people. The rise of these personal seals is developing the gift market.

Do you know the Ali Plateau? It is a very cold area which is nearly 5,000 meters above sea level in the western part of China. Qi Fabao, the "hero regiment commander for defending the border", has guarded our land with his life there.

Qi Fabao was born into a common family in Wuwei City, Gansu Province. He was always a top student at school in his childhood and had a strong wish to join the army. At the age of 18, he realized his dream. He chose to set foot on the land of the Ali Plateau in Xizang and began his career of defending the border. He said, "Not everyone can understand my choice, but I have never regretted it."

For over 20 years, he has defended the border and experienced many life-and-death moments. When the communication lines didn't work, he stood in the cold water for hours to repair them. When facing the falling stones, he even used his body to stop them. Once in 2005, he rode a horse in the snow mountains to carry out a task. He and the horse fell into the river from the cliff (悬崖). His back was badly hurt, but the great pain never broke him. More than 1,000 patrols saw his promise of defending the border of our land.

With his youth and blood, Qi Fabao has written a chapter of loyalty and responsibility. He shows us that loving our country is not empty words, but real actions.

Desertification (荒漠化) is a difficult problem for the whole world. For many years, Chinese scientists have had rich experience in dealing with desertification in Northwest China. Now they are working to help African countries turn their sandy areas into green ones.

China has made great progress through hard work, though it is seriously influenced by desertification. Until November 2024, China built a long wall of trees, which caught the world's attention. It is 3,046 km long! And China has created 32 million hectares of new forest.

Chinese scientists shared the technologies with Mauritania, an African country. They introduced different kinds of plants from China and used straw checkerboards to stop sand from moving. They developed new ways to save water for farming. Smart technologies such as robots, drones and sand-blocking systems driven by solar panels also helped a lot.

The China-Africa Green Technology Park was built in Mauritania. In 2024, the park was an empty land swept by wind and sand. Just one year later, there were grasses, fruits and vegetables. Wang Yongdong, a senior engineer from China, said, "The goal of the park is not only to protect the environment but also to help local people." So far, China has trained 45 skilled workers and created 120 jobs for the local community.

The Mauritanian environment minister described China as a "very important partner". To help African countries, Chinese scientists have overcome many difficulties. As a key member fighting against desertification in the world, China promises to keep working and make bigger efforts. Wang said, "We are a community with a shared future. We hope our efforts will show this spirit."

Eyes play an important role in daily life. However, some habits may be bad for your eyes. Healthy vision (视力) starts with you! 

◆ Do exercise.

Kids who exercise often have a healthier body weight than kids who don't. If you are too heavy, it is easy to get into some health problems such as diabetes. These problems might lead to poor vision. 

◆ Eat right.

Keep your eyes healthy by eating right food. Try to have different kinds of fruits and green vegetables. Fish has been shown to help your eyes, too.

Don't spend too much time on a computer, mobile phone, or TV screen. Looking at any one thing for too long can tire your eyes. Give your eyes a rest with the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

◆ Wear the right protection.

 When you do sports on the playground or use chemicals in a science lab, protective glasses are helpful to prevent your eyes from getting hurt. When walking in the sun, you'd better wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

◆ Speak up if your vision changes.
