When I was six years old, I was one of the typical kids who started to learn musical instruments. Parents would hear their young kids shouting, "Mom! I want to learn the piano! Dad! I want to learn the violin!" Well, the difference is, for me, that it was not my free will. Yes, my mom just forced me to play the violin. In the violin school, you could hear the kids crying in the practice room after being scolded (责骂) by their moms. I was one of them. At the time, I hated the violin. However, I started to love the violin when my mom stopped focusing on my relationship with the violin in high school, because her attention naturally changed to my school performance. Maybe she didn't have enough energy to force me to practice anymore.

When I finally got into college, the first thing I did was to register for the campus orchestra. I didn't want to stop playing the violin. The orchestra helped me get involved in such a harmonious, friendly group for the first time while I was playing an instrument. It was my first time meeting friends who have similar hobbies, passion and dreams. I can't forget my first classical concert. I was feeling true love toward the orchestra and the violin. I was extremely excited and I couldn't wait for the next concert. The time just passed as a blink. Two hours felt like 10 minutes.

For everyone, it's never too late to learn to play an instrument. It is really one of the best ways to express one's emotions and communicate it to other people, and I have grown my emotions while being a part of an orchestra.

Jun's program takes note of a writer's stylistic characteristics. It can then use those characteristics to check if another text was written by the same person. Jun says his project was motivated by seeing students admit using AI tools on classroom assignments.

But relying too much on these tools can erode someone's creativity. It can also harm their ability to work out problems themselves, Jun says. And young people are most at risk. "I figured that by me making an attempt to solve this issue, I could help millions of teachers as well as maybe help kids become more creative and spark more innovation." Jun says.

AI use for homework is not rare. The Turnitin program is an existing tool to check who wrote a piece of text. In the first year it was available, it analyzed more than 200 million student papers. Last year, it reported evidence that some 11 in every 100 papers it reviewed had used AI for at least a fifth of their text. Three in every 100 papers used AI for four-fifths of their content.

"That's absolutely no surprise," Jun says. Some forms of generative AI are powerful, game-changing technologies. "Using AI can be good for education, obviously," he says, "But a lot of kids don't use it properly."

Since the release of some AI software, teachers increasingly have had to make hard calls. They must decide whether a student wrote an essay, or just asked a machine to write it. Wrongfully flagging some student's work as cheating would decrease the student's trust in their teacher.

Jun's new program hopes to limit that.

The new findings, published on April 20 in Science, show that while elephant seals may spend 10 hours a day sleeping on the beach during the reproductive season, they average just 2 hours of sleep per day when they are at sea on months-long food-searching trips. They sleep for about 10 minutes at a time during deep, 30-minute dives (潜水), often moving downwards while fast asleep, and sometimes lying still on the seafloor.

Elephant seals are most easily hunted by predators (捕食者) such as sharks and killer whales when they are at the surface in the open ocean, so they only spend a minute or two breathing at the surface in between dives. "They're able to hold their breath for a long time, so they can go into a sound sleep on these dives deep below the surface where it's safe," said Kendall-Bar, the first author of the study.

Kendall-Bar developed a system (EEG) that can record brain activity in wild elephant seals during their normal diving behavior at sea. In addition to the system, the seals carried time-depth recorders, accelerometers, and other instruments that allowed the researchers to track the seals' movements along with the corresponding brain activity. With data on brain activity and diving behavior from 13 non-adult female elephant seals, including a total of 104 sleep dives, Kendall-Bar developed a computer program for identifying periods of sleep based on the dive data alone.

Williams called Kendall-Bar's work on the project an excellent achievement. "It's an amazing feat to pull this off," she said. "Kendall-Bar used the dive data to create data-driven animations so we can really imagine what the animal is doing as it dives."

Choose a quiet place to study without distractions. The more time you spend studying, the more you'll learn and the better grades you'll earn. So remove all distractions (cell phones, television, loud/fast-paced music, and talkative friends/family members), to ensure a calm, focused environment.

Take short breaks from studying. So plan to take a 10-minute break after each hour. If you get stuck on a certain topic, that's a good time to take a little break so you can come back refreshed. Set a timer on your phone or another device so a short 10-minute breather doesn't turn into 30 minutes of delay.

Reading books that challenge you can expand your vocabulary and comprehension skills, which is useful when a teacher assigns linguistically (语言方面的) difficult texts. If you are not already an active reader, start at your level and work your way up.

Study for quizzes and tests early. If you have a big test coming up, start studying a few days to a week before the test, or even when the test is announced. Make a study schedule, breaking up your time into sections, and stick to it.

Create mind maps of topics to help you learn new things. Mind-maps help you make connections between old and new information. This practice is especially useful when you need to brainstorm ideas for big projects. To create a mind map, write the topic in the center, add lines that point in different directions, and write your ideas on top of the lines.

C. Your brain needs time to rest and digest information.

D. But the quality of your study time needs to be efficient.

E. These connections provide new contexts so you remember facts better.

This was just one of the many experiences that made me more4 about my impact and pushed me to5 in a more environmentally friendly way. The trip to Borneo was another life changing6 that has strengthened my decision to live a zero-waste lifestyle. While traveling in some African countries, we came to know that7 drinkable water was always a challenge. So we had to travel with our water bottle, and we8 to avoid using plastic during our trip.

Besides, we were also9 impressed by our stay on Libaran Island. There was a turtle preservation10 and the group had made big efforts to11 the beaches and creatively reuse plastic for ten years. Despite that, the coast is12 daily with tons of plastic coming from the tides (潮汐).

Facing this global issue13 gave me a feeling of sadness and anger and it soon turned into14: to do as much as possible to reduce plastic in my life. Small changes can15 a difference!

Shi Guangquan: Protector of Lingyin Laba Festival Customs

Born in March 1961, Shi Guangquan, a Chinese folk artist, has spent all his life preserving and developing the (tradition) Laba Festival (腊八节) customs. In 1989, he became a monk (僧侣) at Faguang Temple in Haimen, Jiangsu, and (begin) learning the rituals (宗教仪式)and cooking skills of the temple's Laba Festival — an ancient festival celebrating harvest, and community kindness. During the time he lived in temples like Longhua in Shanghai and Guangfu in Chongming, he continued to practice and lead these customs.

In 2007, Shi joined Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou as the main leader of the temple, where he actively promoted the customs. He introduced a free ticket practice for the temple during the festival, allowing local people to join the (celebrate). More importantly, he made a big group activity of giving out Laba porridge to citizens,(turn) the temple into an important centre for community warmth. (keep) the tradition alive, he worked with his team to create new workplaces, such as interactive workshops, mixing old rituals modern life.

Shi's (effort) have made Lingyin's Laba Festival a famous provincial intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage, (list) in 2017. His work shows how traditional culture can remain lively and have meaning for today. By connecting the past and present, he has helped people understand the value of preserving their cultural roots, making the festival not only a ritual, a living part of community life.
