How can you become a more efficient learner? Many students ask this question. The secret is not just to study longer, but to study smarter. Here are some research-based strategies that can help you improve your learning outcomes significantly. 

Firstly, spaced repetition is a powerful technique. Instead of cramming all your study into one long session, spread it out over several shorter sessions. Review the material after one day, then after three days, and again after a week. This helps move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. 

Secondly, practice retrieval. This means actively trying to recall information without looking at your notes. You can use flashcards or simply close your book and try to summarize what you have learned. Testing yourself in this way is far more effective than passively re-reading textbooks. 

Thirdly, make connections between new knowledge and what you already know. This is called elaboration. For example, when you learn a new historical event, try to link it to its causes and effects, or to similar events you already understand. Creating these mental links makes the information more meaningful and easier to remember. 

Finally, get enough sleep and exercise. Your brain needs rest to consolidate memories. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which can improve your focus and thinking skills. Remember, a healthy body supports a healthy mind. 

Class was almost over. Tom asked our math teacher, Mr Green, about the answer to a math problem. He thought it was 512. But Mr Green said it was 64.

Later that day, Tom asked friends, classmates, and other math teachers. Was it 64 or 512? One of the math teachers they asked was Mr Smith, our math teacher last year. He said it was 512. Then the fun began.

The next day, in Mr Green's class, Tom told him Mr Smith's answer. Mr Green didn't change his mind. As soon as the class was over, Tom went to Mr Smith's office.

A few minutes later, Tom returned with Mr Smith and four students from another class. And the classroom became an interesting place. Everyone was excited, waiting for a long, heated discussion between the two teachers.

We weren't disappointed. Right then and there, Mr Smith and Mr Green began their argument (争论). They tried to show their answers on the blackboard. They used some math words and expressions I had never heard of, but at one point, the vocabulary turned simple.

"No, …" Mr Smith said. "Yes, …" Mr Green answered.

"No, …" Mr Smith said again. "Yes, …" Mr Green repeated.

At first, we were on our seats listening carefully, trying to follow their ideas. Later, Tom and some other students began to stand together around them. As time passed by, students showed their support for different teachers and became two teams. Everyone worked so hard, just for the answer to a single math problem. That's the power of maths!

When the school bell rang, the problem was still not solved. "Why not ask all the math teachers at school to join us and have a meeting for it?" Mr. Smith said.

"How about lunch time? …" Mr. Green replied.

"Great! …" All the students shouted …

Don't let your study time turn into a boring experience. Here are some useful ways to make it better.

Study as a group. A simple and great idea is to study in groups. When you study with classmates, you can talk about the problems you meet. This way, you won't feel so tired of studying alone.

Make study surprising. If you like surprises, write different study tasks (任务) on pieces of paper, like "do math exercises for 15 minutes" or "recite (背诵) English words". Then pick one. You can change it if your friends agree.

Add games into study. Make study into a game. For example, when learning history, you can have a test game. One student can be the game host (主持人) to ask questions, and others are players to answer.

One of my classmates used to hate studying math. Our teacher suggested giving him small gifts when he did well in math tests. It worked at first. But later, he didn't care much. Then, the teacher gave him some more difficult math tasks. Now he is used to them.

Learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to gain knowledge and skills. In modern education, students (encourage) to take part in all kinds of activities instead of sitting in class all day.

Last term, our school  (start) a special project called "Learn by Doing". We  (divide) into small groups and asked to finish different tasks. Some groups grew vegetables in the school garden, while  (other) built small models.

At first, we met many difficulties. We didn't know how  (solve) the problems and often argued with each other. However, our teacher told us that we could learn more from mistakes. With her help, we kept (try) and finally finished our tasks successfully.
