In Beijing, Yin Yi has turned a basement (地下室) into an "underground cat city" by raising about 150 homeless cats. In 2016, after moving to the city, the young man felt lonely (孤独的) and began taking them in at a small animal rescue center. "Spending time with them becomes my daily comfort. " Yin says. 

Every morning at around 7, Yin arrives at the cat shed (小屋) to replace the drinking water, refill the food bowls and examine the air purifier. When he first started, it was in bad shape. Luckily, in 2017, a photographer took pictures of the place and posted them online. The photos caught public attention and brought in donations (捐款). With more people's help, the shed was upgraded and the cats' lives improved. "We don't have a shortage of cat food anymore; what we need most is people. " Yin says. 

Now, only three long-term volunteers (志愿者) like him care for these cats, and Yin worries that he won't be able to put in as much time in the future. He hopes more people will join in helping keep the cats safe and healthy. 

Though he works hard, Yin stays modest (谦虚的). "I didn't do anything great!" he says, explaining that it's the cats that have brought him peace. 

Yin's greatest wish is to see this "underground cat city" disappear one day—when all these "angels" find loving homes above ground. 

[Mum is sitting in the living room, worried. The clock reads 10:27 pm. The son runs through the door, out of breath. ]

Son: (breathing quickly) I'm back. . . 

Mum: Look at the time! Do you remember your promise?

Son: (in a low voice) Yes, I promised to be back before 9 tonight. But. . . 

Mum: (interrupting) A deal is a deal! The promise wasn't kept, so you can't stay out late next time. 

Son: Mum, please listen. . . I was heading back at 8:30. 

Mum: Then why are you late?

Son: On my way back, I realised that my phone was at Jiacheng's house. I had to go back to get it. 

Mum: Why did it take that long to get your phone?

Son: Halfway back, I noticed an old woman under a street lamp. She was wearing a thin blouse and it was cold. She looked pale. I asked her if she needed help. She said she was lost. 

Mum: So you sent her home?

Son: No! She couldn't tell me her address. 

Mum: Then what did you do?

Son: I checked and saw that a yellow band was attached to her wrist. It had her information on it. But I couldn't call her family without my phone. So I gave her my jacket and took her to the nearest police station. I waited with her until she was taken home by a policewoman. After that I ran to pick up my phone and came home. 

Mum: Oh, what a night! I'm sorry for being cross with you. But why didn't you phone me from the police station? I was so worried!

Son: Oh, I didn't think of that. . . Sorry, Mum. . . 

Mum: Now I understand. I'm very proud of you.

I'm glad to tell you about my experiences in learning first aid and doing volunteer work. I'm a student in Grade Eight. Our school held a professional first aid training last month, which was different from the basic one we had before. A doctor from the local hospital who has rich experience in emergency treatment came to teach us. He not only told us how to deal with common accidents, like nosebleeds, burns and falls, but also showed us how to give CPR to someone who can't breathe or has a heart attack. He even let us practice on mannequins, which made the training more practical and useful. Now I can not only help people around me if they have small accidents but also deal with some simple emergencies. 

I also joined the school volunteer club, which organizes different kinds of volunteer activities every month. Every weekend, we go to the community to help people in need. We help the old people do housework, like cleaning rooms, washing clothes and buying food. We also help the disabled kids with their studies and teach them some simple skills to help them live independently. Sometimes we organize activities to collect old books, clothes and toys for the poor children in the countryside. Every time I see the smiles on their faces, I feel very happy and realize that volunteering is a meaningful thing. 

Our school has some strict rules for volunteers. We must be polite and patient to everyone we help. We can't give up easily even when we meet difficulties. We must try our best to help others and respect their feelings. I think these rules are good for us. They help us become better people and learn how to take responsibility. I hope you can also join a volunteer group and experience the happiness of helping others. Please write to me soon and tell me about your experiences.

Нelрing the disablеd. Мanу рeoplе with disabilities neеd help. Yоu can volunteеr to rеаd books to thе blind or delivеr (递送) something for pеoрlе who саn't get arоund tоо well. 

 There are lots of volunteer jobs to do in hospitals and health care centres. As a volunteer, you can make beds, deliver flowers and gifts and help serve meals. Hospitals also need volunteers to look after children while their parents are seeing a doctor. 

Helping families in need. Some families don't have enough money to buy food and clothes for their kids.  To help these people, as a volunteer, you can give clothes, food or money to, or raise money for, a charity.  

 Sometimes people need more help when holidays come. Holidays are happy, but for the people who are alone or unlucky, they can be a lonely, hard time. As a volunteer, you can deliver holiday dinners to less lucky people, visit the lonely old people and serve food to the homeless. 

Lots of people find that they really enjoy volunteering. If everyone helps out a bit, we'll have a better world to live in!

This  happened in a waiting room at Sunshine Hospital. The hospital provided colouring books for young patients but didn't offer enough crayons. Crayons may carry  and spread diseases. They can only be  once. The hospital had many new patients every day. It just couldn't afford  crayons for every child. Leah was born with a serious disease, and she made many hospital visits. A lot of time she's in great . But colouring has helped her get through it. Leah didn't want other young patients to feel her. It can be boring to wait for X-rays and . She wants them to feel good. 

She planned to buy 500 boxes of crayons for the hospital. But her pocket money was only enough for about 40 boxes. Because of her , she couldn't do chores for money, either. But she didn't give up. With the help of  family and friends, she held many activities to raise money. She's added colour to this hospital. The waiting rooms are now filled with happier kids and brighter pictures!

In Portland, 16-year-old Carlos Mendez found that many kids in his neighborhood had broken bicycles lying in their garages (车库). Carlos, who had learned to repair (修理) bikes from his older brother, saw a chance to help. 

He had a free bicycle repair class in his family's yard every Saturday afternoon. With tools given by a local bike shop and spare parts from old bicycles, Carlos taught kids how to repair bikes. Soon, his yard became a popular place to hang out on weekends. 

To help more people, Carlos saved money from his part-time job and bought a second-hand tricycle (三轮车). He turned it into a mobile repair station named "Rolling Wrenches". Now, he rides his tricycle to different parks and community centers in the city, offering free simple repairs and safety checks (检查). 

Carlos's project got bigger with the support of the community. A man called Jack heard about his work and helped him get some money to buy more tools to give away. His mobile workshop has repaired over 200 bicycles so far. Carlos believes that every kid should have a safe bike to ride, and he's making that come true.
