  • 1. Junior year (the third year of high school in the U. S. education system) is when things actually get very important. Make sure you take care of the following things.

Take the Most Challenging Course Load You Can. Go for the Honors Classes. Challenge yourself.

Earn the Best Grades You Can. Grades are important. How important are good grades? Short answer: super important.

Build Your Brag Sheet (成绩亮点单). You should know what this is by now. This sheet should be filling up with all the wonderful things you have done. By junior year, you should be an active voice in at least one extracurricular activity.

Prepare for the SAT and ACT and take one of each in the Spring. These two tests are really important for the applications process, so make sure you prepare well.

Visit Colleges. Now's the time to let the schools actually know you're visiting, letting them know you're interested. Book a formal tour. The goal here is to get a feel for those schools you may apply to.

Begin to generate Your Big List. This is a list of schools that meet your requirements to research and visit.

Request Letters of Recommendation. Remember that Brag Sheet? Use it to get some great letters. Just remember to tell your teachers where to send them.

Fix these things, and you will be more confident when applying for colleges.

二、B

  • 2. I have wild camped in countless locations in Britain. I have not yet come across a landowner or been asked to leave. There is a generally-accepted tolerance (容忍) to wild camping in the more mountainous areas of England and Wales. If you arrive late, leave early and camp above the highest fence line or wall, and then you are unlikely to have troubles with a landowner.

I try to be careful with where I choose a spot to put up a tent or lay my heavy bag if wild camping in England and Wales. I choose spots that are away from the edge when I can, and far away from roads and houses. I also try and move away from busy footpaths or popular areas.

There is also the issue of what trace you are leaving by camping there. Ideally it will be a small piece of temporarily flattened (暂时压平) grass and some easily missed tent peg (钉) holes. But what about your toilet arrangements? The noodles that fixed themselves to the bottom of the pan? The waste of plastic that escaped from the tent in the morning?

Worrying about being "caught" by a landowner is just a small part of wild camping in the mountains of England, Wales and Northern Ireland — your environmental impact (影响) needs to be considered just as much — if not more.

(1)、What can we learn about wild camping in Britain?
A、It is forbidden everywhere. B、It is tolerated in some areas. C、It needs landowners' agreement. D、It harms mountain environment.
(2)、How does the author choose a camping spot?
A、Near busy roads. B、By house walls. C、Away from footpaths. D、On river edges.
(3)、What does the underlined word "trace" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A、Marks left behind. B、Tools used during. C、Plans made before. D、Rubbish thrown away.
(4)、What does the author care about most when camping?
    A、Tent quality. B、Food safety. C、Environmental impact. D、Landowner attitude.

三、C

  • 3. If you're going to write a one-hit wonder you couldn't do much better than To Kill a Mockingbird. Winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, it's never been out of print and it's been a choice of high-school English classes for generations.

The story of a young girl facing deep-seated prejudice (偏见), it tells a six-year-old Scout Finch and her (relatively) anti-racist family against the separation of an American South in the control of Jim Crow. Author Harper Lee drew on her own childhood experience for the events of To Kill a Mockingbird. More than one reader has noticed some similarities between Scout and Lee herself — and between Scout's friend Dill and Lee's own childhood friend, Truman Capote. Like Scout, Lee's father was a lawyer who helped black men for law problems; like Scout, Lee had a brother four years older. But Lee has said that the novel wasn't intended to be autobiography (自传) — she was just trying to write what she was familiar with.

It's hard to argue with To Kill a Mockingbird's message of standing up for what's right even when the costs are high. But not everyone agrees that the book holds the moral high ground. It's also been challenged for its one-sided description of African-Americans as gentle, simple people who need whites to protect them. Some people see the novel as taking a powerful stand against racism. Others just see it as promoting a kinder, gentler form of racism.

So, which is it? You'll just have to read it and decide for yourself.

(1)、Why did Harper Lee write the novel?
A、To record her life. B、To honor her father. C、To write what she knew. D、To support Truman Capote.
(2)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
    A、Lee's life story. B、Lee's father's work. C、Scout's friendship. D、Lee's writing origins.
(3)、What can we infer about the novel's evaluation?
    A、It's fully positive. B、It's quite different. C、It's out-of-date. D、It's too simple.
(4)、How does the author end the text?
A、By praising the novel. B、By asking readers to judge. C、By giving a clear answer. D、By commenting on the novel.

  • 4. November 5 is World Tsunami Awareness Day. Tsunamis don't happen often, but they cause terrible damage. People usually focus on helping victims right after a tsunami, but the long-term economic costs are often forgotten.

Poor countries face big problems. They have little money and few people have insurance (保险), so tsunami costs can be much higher than their national savings. This leads to more borrowing, debt and greater weakness.

Even when we calculate the average annual loss (AAL) from tsunamis, the costs stay high. Smaller countries and economies suffer more. For example, Polynesia's AAL is lower than New Zealand's, but it's 13 times more costly relative to its GDP.

Tsunamis also slow development. Small island nations and poor countries like Somalia, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu lose 0. 4-0. 9% of their GDP yearly due to tsunami risks. Some may even struggle to pay their debts after a big tsunami.

Rich countries recover quickly, but poor nations need decades to rebuild. However, we can reduce risks: tsunami-resistant (防海啸) buildings, coastal green areas and early warning systems work well. Yet not enough money is spent on these measures.

Investing in risk reduction isn't an extra cost — it helps with lasting growth. Every dollar spent saves lives, cuts losses and helps poor countries reach their development goals faster. On World Tsunami Awareness Day, let's remember the value of preventing tsunami risks.

(1)、What makes tsunami costs worse for poor countries?
A、Low insurance coverage. B、Lack of early warnings. C、Slow development speed. D、Simple basic facilities.
(2)、What can be inferred about small economies?
A、They recover faster after tsunamis. B、Tsunamis hit them more frequently. C、They have higher AAL than big ones. D、Their GDP is more affected by tsunamis.
(3)、Which is an effective risk reduction measure?
A、More relief aid. B、Coastal green belts. C、GDP growth promotion. D、Debt reduction policies.
(4)、What's the best title for the text?
A、Tsunamis: Causes and Destructive Effects B、Tsunamis: Economic Losses Across Countries C、Reducing Tsunami Risk: Value and Measures D、Reducing Tsunami Risk: Global Investment Needs
