2. Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However, in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. "Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses," Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei's effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organization, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. "When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall," Liu says. "It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall."
Mei's hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.
Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. "My biggest wish," Mei says, "is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it."
(1)、What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall?A、The dream of being a hero. B、The influence of his friends. C、Poor condition of the Great Wall. 3. For better eyesight (视力), doctors advise limiting (限制) the hours of screen time and encourage having enough eye resting time.
However, another study shows that sitting in front of computer or TV screens for long hours is not the only reason for myopia (近视). With the aim of figuring out the secret behind it, an Australian research team studied young children in Sydney and Singapore. The research team found that there were fewer children who had myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore, even though they spent more time in front of computer and TV screens. The major finding is that children in Sydney spend longer hours on outdoor sports than those in Singapore.
Indoor and outdoor sports both make the eyes pay attention to more distant (远处的) objects, which stops the eyes from changing original shape. But outdoor sports may be better than indoor sports for myopia. Because natural light is good for eye growth and vitamin (维他命) D from the sunlight might be useful to it. Many doctors suggest that every child get its first eye test when he/she is about two and a half years old, and even if his/her sight seems good enough. It is necessary for myopic (近视的) children to wear glasses to stop headaches, trouble reading and so on. It is also important that schools invite doctors to test their students' eyes.
If that is not possible, school teachers should at least encourage parents and children to have regular eye examinations and wear glasses. And parents should remember not only to limit the total screen time for their children, but also to encourage them to spend time outdoors.
(1)、What did the Australian research team study for?A、To find the reasons for myopia. B、To find the ways to treat myopia. C、To learn to choose right glasses. D、To improve children's eyesight.(2)、Why are there fewer children with myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore?A、Because the children in Sydney watch TV less. B、Because the children in Sydney have more eye resting time. C、Because the children in Sydney use computer less. D、Because the children in Sydney do more outdoor sports.(3)、What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A、Sydney children don't study hard. B、Singapore children do less exercise. C、Room light does harm to children's eyes. D、Outdoor light may help slow myopia progression.(4)、Which of the following is TRUE?A、Children should have eye tests as soon as they reach school age. B、Looking more at distant objects can help the eyes keep their original shape. C、Doing outdoor sports with no glasses is good for myopic children. D、Children should limit their time in the sun to protect their eyes.四、D

4. Seven people have died in a landslide caused by pouring rain in Indonesia's Sumatra island, officials said on Thursday, adding to the death toll (死亡人数) from landslides in the region this week. Rescuers recovered the bodies of the victims, including a driver and passengers, from a tourist bus that was covered by trees, mud, and rocks in the landslide on the road from Medan city to Berastagi town in Indonesia's North Sumatra province. The route is the main access from the capital Medan to other districts in the region.
The bus was among vehicles that had been cut off by landslides on the road since Wednesday morning. More than 10 people were also injured and have been relocated to the hospital in Medan city.
Muji Ediyanto, traffic director of the North Sumatra Regional Police, said in a video message distributed by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency on Thursday that some vehicles remain trapped between the landslide locations along that road. "It will take at least two days to withdraw them from the landslide. Several vehicles are still trapped by piles from the landslides. There are also fallen trees at several points and landslides and the vehicles have not been able to get out of the locations," Ediyanto said.
Earlier this week, 20 people died after flash floods and landslides at four locations in the mountainsides of North Sumatra province, including Karo regency that is located less than 20 kilometers from the most-recent landslide location.
Seasonal rains from around October through to March frequently cause flooding and landslides in Indonesia, an archipelago (群岛) of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile (肥沃的) flood plains.
(1)、What happened to the tourist bus?A、It was hit by fallen rocks alone. B、It disappeared in sudden flash floods. C、Most passengers in it were rescued immediately. D、It was buried by a mixture of mud and stones.(2)、Why will clearing the Medan-Berastagi road take at least two days?A、Heavy machines have not arrived. B、The injured hold up the traffic. C、Many landslides and fallen trees still trap the road. D、Rescue workers care more about finding bodies than opening the road.(3)、What can we learn about landslides in Indonesia?A、They often happen in urban areas. B、They are predictable and preventable. C、They primarily affect agricultural land. D、They are common during certain months.(4)、What is the best title for the passage?A、Flash Floods Made 20 People Lose Their Lives. B、Climate Change Causes More Disasters in Indonesia. C、Landslide Buries Tourist Bus in North Sumatra. D、Rescuers Perform Operations on Medan-Berastagi Road.五、阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

5. From Sofa to 5K — My Dad's Running Story
Two years ago, my dad looked like a human armchair. After dinner he always sank into the sofa, phone in hand, and stayed there until bedtime. One evening, however, a health check-up report changed everything. The doctor warned that Dad's blood pressure was too high. Mum and I were worried, but Dad just smiled weakly. Without a word, he tightened the shoe laces and walked out into the chill morning air, his breath forming small white clouds.
The first week was hard. He could only walk to the end of our street and back, breathing like a broken vacuum cleaner. Step by step, he turned each walk into numbers that whispered, "You're going further than yesterday." Seeing the numbers grow gave him hope.
Weeks turned into months. Dad started to jog, then run. When laziness crept in, he glanced at the report still taped to the fridge, and muttered "Not today," and slammed the door shut behind him as he headed out for his run, "No giving up." That report became his personal coach.
One year later, Dad stood at the starting line of our city's 5-kilometre race. I waved at him from the crowd, my heart pounding harder than his. He crossed the finish line with tears in his eyes and Mum's hand in his. Our sofa finally lost its best friend.
Now Dad is preparing for a 10K. His story taught me that change doesn't need a miracle — just a first step.
A. He said nothing, but the next day he quietly put on his sneakers.
B. He bought the most expensive running shoes he could find online.
C. He hung the report on the fridge door like a scary reminder.
D. The moment he received the finisher's medal, our whole family cheered.
E. We all thought he'd never leave the sofa again.
F. He decided to run only when the weather was perfect.
G. Still, he refused to quit and kept track of every metre he walked.
