2. Virginia Guarddon can't remember her life without some sort of art. She stared playing the piano when she was 6. At 10, she came across works by the Spanish poet Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, and she was hooked. She started writing poems that would be featured in a couple of books.
There's something else that's always been in her life: a type of skin lupus (狼疮) . "All of my life, I tried to find ways to make it better," Guarddon said. "And that led to my trying to help others feel better about their skin." The attempt took her to the U.S. in 1994, where she studied science and piano. And then she began a career in skin care. " To me, skin is a form of art," she said. " I love making women feel beautiful."
" I wanted to create something of my own," Guarddon said. " I wanted to realize my dream." Her dream? Combining all of her passions into one.
The result is Poet's Garden Apothecary, Guarddon's own skin care line and the online business: Poet's Garden Alchemist. Guarddon teamed up with a laboratory to create her line of products, which she called "skin poetry". The products, made for every skin type, include an oil face cleanser, day cream and night cream. With each purchase, customers receive a custom poem from one of the company's contributors. And some earnings from the business go to the Poetry Foundation.
In the first few months of running business, Guarddon said, Poet's Garden Alchemist is turning into an online poet's movement. She often hosts live poetry readings on Instagram. " To me, skin care and poetry go together," she says. " I'm trying to show that beauty is not just skin deep. It's about our voice and how we express it."
(1)、What inspired Guarddon to start her skin care art?A、Gustavo's works. B、Her passion for music. C、Her early experience. D、The dream of being a poet.(2)、What can we know about "skin poetry" products?A、They are made in a laboratory. B、They are created to cure skin lupus. C、They win high praise from customers. D、They get financial support from the Poetry Foundation.(3)、Which of the following best describes Guarddon?A、Reliable and modest. B、Smart and hard-working. C、Creative and caring. D、Determined and ambitious.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、How to Cure Skin Lupus B、A Special Skin Product C、The Secret to Running Business D、Putting Passions into Business三、C

3. From the engine in your car to the CPU in your laptop, mechanical systems tend to heat up when they're working harder. Now new research has revealed that the same can be said of the brain -and it runs hotter than was previously thought.
This isn't a sign of malfunctioning though, researchers think, and may actually be evidence that the brain is operating healthily. Unusual heat signatures could potentially be used in the future to look for signs of brain damage or disorder.
"To me, the most surprising finding from our study is that the healthy human brain can reach temperatures that would be diagnosed as fever anywhere else in the body," says biologist John O'Neill from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in the UK. "Such high temperatures have been measured in people with brain injuries in the past, but had been assumed to result from the injury."
Previously, those measurements taken from people with brain injuries had been the primary insight scientists had into brain temperatures which isn't the same as capturing the state of the brain during everyday life.
Here, the team used a technique called magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)-measuring chemical patterns through magnetic fields to measure brain temperature in 40healthy volunteers, aged from 20 to 40 years old. What's more, they combined this information with data on circadian rhythms (生理节奏) and time of day.
The average brain temperature was38. 5℃ (101.3F) the researchers found, more than2degrees higher than under the tongue. The highest brain temperature recorded was40. 9℃(105. 6℃). Daily variations averaged around1℃(1.8F), with the outer parts of the brain generally cooler.
"We found that brain temperature drops at night before you go to sleep and rises during the day, "says O'Neill. "There is good reason to believe this daily variation is associated with long-term brain health—something we hope to investigate next."
(1)、What does the underlined word "malfunctioning" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Having different functions. B、Failing to work correctly. C、Heating up while working. D、Operating in high temperatures.(2)、What surprises John O'Neill most in the study according to paragraph 3?A、Brain injuries usually lead to high temperatures. B、High temperatures are the signs of brain damage. C、Healthy human brains can be infected with a fever. D、Human brains have higher temperatures than bodies.(3)、What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A、What result the research led to. B、How the research was conducted. C、How the research differed from the previous ones. D、What influence the research had on the volunteers.(4)、What may the researchers work on next according to the last paragraph?A、The drop of brain temperature at night. B、The rise of brain temperature at dawn. C、The relationship between temperature changes and brain health. D、The different causes of the daily variation in brain temperatures.四、D

4. Disease spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves?
Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they've developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.
The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.
Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming("Simon")Wong. He and schoolmate Kin Pong ( Michael ) Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.
After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide(二氧化钛)is known to kill bacteria. It's already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.
Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet(紫外线的)light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.
To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass, Each end fits into a bracket (托架).Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light.
And here's the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.
The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about $13 (about 81 yuan) to build.
(1)、The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to .A、demonstrate how most diseases are spread indirectly B、remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands C、explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively D、help to describe a new invention that prevents diseases from spreading(2)、Michael and Simon's door handle .A、is too expensive for ordinary families B、is powered by the movement of its users C、works better at night than in the daytime D、is made of a metal that can take in UV light(3)、The LED is placed inside the brackets to .A、supply enough power to the handle system B、produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria C、provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better D、direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface(4)、What is the author's attitude toward Michael and Simon s door handle system?A、Cautious B、Critical C、Enthusiastic D、Disappointed五、E

The weather is the most common topic in Britain.. Because in Britain the weather changes a lot. Wind, rain, sun, cloud, snow — they can all happen in Britain.
At banks, cinemas, shops, bus stops you can always see people in queues (排队). They stand and wait quietly, often for a long time. Each new person stands at the end of the queue — sometimes in rain, wind or snow. They never complain and they will get quite upset when someone jumps the queue.
Men always shake hands when they meet. They shook hands to show that they didn't have a sword (剑). Now shaking hands is a custom in most countries. In Britain you don't shake hands with your friends or family members. But you do shake hands when you meet a person for the first time.
And they always send birthday cards or presents. There are also other cards like Christmas cards, good luck cards, congratulations on your new baby cards and getting well soon cards. They have everything for every important moment.
British people are very superstitious (迷信的). They believe in all sorts of signs they see. For them black cats are lucky. The more leaves you catch, the more lucky you will be. On the contrary, never open an umbrella in the house and never break a mirror because they mean seven years of bad luck.
A. Another common thing in Britain is queuing.

D. In autumn if you catch falling leaves you are lucky.

9. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏团). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"
The ticket lady again told him the price. The man didn't have enough money. How could he turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
