  • 2. My grandmother knew what every Italian-American grandmother knows: that food brings us together, and that one of the best ways to show people you love them is to feed them.

It's no surprise, then, that so many of our family traditions centered around food. We'd gather in the kitchen for every birthday and holiday, filling up on antipasto (开胃菜) before piling our plates high with the main course. My grandparents always hosted Christmas dinner, and it was always more than enough, but right before we sat down to eat, she'd pull me aside to show me the dish she made just for me: fresh pasta with tomato sauce, my absolute favorite food in the world.

It was a simple dish, but to me it was everything. It was the feeling of comfort in a bowl, warm food that filled me with joy. But more than that, it was a gesture that made me feel like I belonged. I was a shy kid, still trying to understand who I was, and in many situations I felt invisible. I'd wonder whether anyone saw me, or if I mattered at all. And here was my grandmother, showing me that she cared for me, and that I was worth making something special for. Years went by; I moved away and got married, but food was always one of the ways my grandmother showed her love. I'd visit throughout the years and she'd serve up a plate of pasta, some leftover dessert she had and a few pieces of fruit she pulled from the fridge.

When my daughter was born in 2020, for the first time in my life I wasn't about to make the trip back home for Christmas. Trying to make the most of things, I cooked my family's traditional foods including, of course, fresh pasta. I facetimed my parents and they handed the phone to my grandmother, and I showed her the pasta. I didn't know it then, but it was the last time I'd ever speak with her. Shortly after the holidays she passed away unexpectedly.

It all seemed not fair that my grandmother passed away so soon after I became a parent. I'd hold my daughter and think about how she'd never get to experience my grandmother's love, her sense of humor or her cooking. I'd wonder how I could make her feel the same sense of belonging and love that I felt through my grandmother's pasta.

(1)、What does food mean in the author's family according to the first two paragraphs?
A、A bond that unites family members. B、A tradition only for birthdays and holidays. C、A symbol of happiness among family members. D、A way to satisfy hunger during family gatherings.

A、The pasta was a rare dish that was difficult to make. B、The pasta showed grandmother's love and attention. C、The author was the only one who was offered the pasta. D、The pasta showed the author was important among her peers.
(3)、Why did the author feel unfair about her grandmother's passing?
A、Because she couldn't cook her grandmother traditional foods. B、Because she had no chance to say goodbye to her grandmother. C、Because her grandmother didn't get to see her daughter grow up. D、Because her daughter would miss out her grandmother's warmth.
(4)、Which of the following can best describe the author's grandmother?
A、Helpful and generous B、Considerate and caring C、Careful and courageous D、Humorous and responsible

三、C

  • 3. Are you able to cook a healthy meal? Are you able to manage your money well? Can you sew a button onto clothes? Not many of us can confidently nod our heads to these questions. Nowadays, schools focus a lot on tough tests and making academic (学业的) requirements higher. Because of this, classes on practical skills are sometimes left out of our busy school schedule. Even when schools do teach these skills, they're often ignored or not seen as important. I believe, however, that schools should teach practical skills as part of a well-rounded education to help us survive in the real world after we graduate.

Schools have done well in preparing us to be successful students in our studies, but may not have prepared us well enough in developing life skills. Yet practical skills such as cooking, housekeeping and first-aid are important for us to manage in the real world. For example, to those who did not have such basic skills, the Covid-19 lockdown was a big shock, as they suddenly found themselves in a difficult situation where restaurants had to close and other important home services also stopped working. For those who experienced lockdowns, being able to cook meals or fix a light bulb themselves would have been satisfying. Yet, it's a pity that schools continue to produce more scholarly individuals who are unfortunately unable to perform simple home-based tasks.

When schools teach practical skills, they are sending an important signal that academic performance alone does not lead to successful growth. Skills such as financial (财政的) management help us become more responsible individuals. Equipped with the financial knowledge that experts provide in schools, we can better discuss our financial and budgeting goals with our parents. Furthermore, enough knowledge on budgeting and saving can keep us away from overspending and help us navigate the world of money more cautiously. The world we live in today is far more complex and schools need to teach beyond academic subjects.

Sandra Carey, a writer, puts it: "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life." School is not simply a place to pass on knowledge and prepare us for a career. By offering us practical skills, it also passes on wisdom that can help us build happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.

(1)、Why does the author mention the three questions in the first paragraph?
A、To make the article funny and attractive. B、To show the difficulty in learning these skills. C、To show these practical skills are in great need. D、To prove academic knowledge is more important.
(2)、How does the writer develop the second paragraph?
A、By using quotes. B、By giving examples. C、By explaining reasons. D、By making comparisons.
(3)、What is the benefit of school's teaching financial management skills?
A、It gives students an advantage in the job market. B、It causes students to be more likely to overspend. C、It makes students better talk about financial plans. D、It helps students become more financially independent.
(4)、Which of the following would Sandra Carey most likely agree with?
A、Knowledge is power. B、All that glitters is not gold. C、A little learning is a dangerous thing. D、Knowledge for life, wisdom for soul.

四、D

  • 4. You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. "They" did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. "They" are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as "they" are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.

Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.

Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.

In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.

In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.

    (1)、According to Paragraph 2, creators_________.
A、seem willing to experience failures in life B、possess the ability to predict future life C、handle ups and downs of life wisely D、have potential to create something new
(2)、What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A、Creators and victims face quite different things in life. B、Creators and victims are masters of their lives. C、Victims can influence more people than creators. D、Compared with victims, creators are more emotional.
(3)、The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that_________.
A、strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims. B、people need family support to deal with challengers in life. C、it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains. D、one's experiences determine his attitude toward life.
(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A、To define victims and creators. B、To evaluate victims against creators. C、To explain the relationship between victims and creators. D、To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.

How to be a Better Tourist While Abroad

If you want to be a better traveler, here are some tips.

Localize your experience. Support local, small, and family-run businesses. Think of the delicious foods, hand-made goods, and experiences that will keep your body dancing for more. Go on free walking trips led by locals who will teach you about history, culture, and all the must-do things in the area. Whether you're chatting with other travelers or locals around the tour, start a conversation and maybe you'll end up with some new friends.

Select public transportation. Although sometimes it may seem less convenient, choosing public transportation gives you closer access to the local ways of living, seeing your host community from different views, and possibly, reducing your carbon footprint.

When thinking about how to be a good traveler, an easy way to fit into the local community is to learn the customs and traditions and experience the richness of life in this place which is new for you. Let your life be different here than it is at home.

Learn the language. Even if you don't speak the local language fluently before you arrive, it's better to at least learn some basic phrases. Put in the good effort, even if you don't speak the language perfectly. By stepping into a new language in a new location, you can step into a new version of yourself-which is pretty cool when you think about it.

Take part in experiential learning. By doing research before you travel abroad, you will be getting yourself ready for some amazing learning chances. Everyone you meet has knowledge and real-life experiences that you can learn from. Everything you do or come across is an opportunity to learn and grow.

    A. Do as the locals do.

    B. Take things as they come.

    C. This can also be an opportunity to meet people.

    D. It may even become a penny saver in the long run.

    E. You can record and reflect on your language learning.

    F. You should keep your mind, heart, and eyes open for new chances.

    G. Remind yourself that making mistakes is part of learning a language.
