Scientists say that hobbies can make kids cleverer, healthier and even more successful when they grow up. How?

When you have a hobby, you learn new things. You have to read instructions (说明书). You look at websites, magazines and books to get more information about your hobby. More reading makes you a better reader and a better learner. 

For many hobbies, such as building model cars and making pottery (陶器), you have to use your brain as well as your hands. We learn by doing things and by touching things. These kinds of activities make people more creative (有创造力的). 

Having a hobby makes you feel good. Scientists say, "When you make something, the feel good part of your brain gets a message. It makes you feel happy. " When we feel happy, we have less stress(压力). Too much stress can make people ill. 

People with hobbies learn how to make goals and solve problems. Learning these skills when you are young can help you when you grow up. For some kids, having a hobby can be the first step to find a better job in the future. 

It's always a good thing to have a hobby. For Miss Patty, a school bus driver in Erie County, her hobby of knitting (编织) has made her really touch the community (社区). 

Miss Patty always wanted to do something with her free time to help the students. After a talk with one of the students, things took a turn from knitting one hat to knitting more hats. 

"The one boy gets on the bus, and he asks 'what are you doing?', I said, ‘I'm making a hat. 'He said, 'That would be great fun having such a warm hat in icy winter. 'So I said, 'What color would you like? That started everything, " Miss Patty told the local newspaper. 

Miss Patty has already knitted 7, 083 hats for students in her free time. Sometimes she will get the student's favourite color before she begins the project. 

What is more moving is that Miss Patty buys all the materials (材料) using her own money. Some people do give her gift cards around the holidays to help, but she still puts out a lot of her own money. 

Along with making hats for the students that will keep them warm, Miss Patty also gets praise (表扬) for being a trusted (可信的) friend to the students. 

Stamp collecting is becoming a big hobby for young people to remember their trips. Lovers of this hobby enjoy collecting stamps about the places they visit. They usually buy stamps in the local post office. 

 Jenny, a 25- year- old teacher, enjoys collecting stamps. For her, this is a great way to record (记示) her trips. Once during a two- day trip to Beijing, she collected over 90 stamps! They're all about beautiful artworks. 

 Ben, a 12- year- old teenager from Beijing, said collecting stamps helped him learn about the culture and history of a place. He likes to buy different kinds of stamps while travelling. For example, when he went to Xi'an, he bought a special stamp. It has a picture of an old Chinese stone bridge on it. "The stamp looks very marvellous. It makes me more interested in Chinese culture, " he said. Then he started to look for more stamps with interesting pictures. Ben also shares them with his friends. It encourages them to visit more places. 

"These days, more and more tourists share their stamps online. Stamp collecting is a good way to help people know more about the local culture. It's really educational, " said Gina, a teacher from a school of Tourism Management in Dongguan. 

The word "family" is special. Everyone wants a happy family. But some unhappy things may happen among family members at times.  How can we have family happiness and enjoy the deep love?

Learn to say thanks and sorry. We say thanks and sorry to others.  By saying thanks, we can make our family members feel they're important. And saying sorry makes them feel understood (被理解).

 We can start a conversation in any place at any time. We can talk about our daily life and feelings with our family members in the car, at the dinner table or on the way back home.

Share housework. Because we live in one house, we do our part in keeping it clean.  Helping around the house brings family members close.

Spend time together. We are busy around all day, but nothing is more important than spending time with family members.  We can eat meals, watch TV, go for a walk and celebrate birthdays together.

The first "forest library" in Shanghai recently opened to the public, giving readers the chance to relax and read in a natural environment. 

Known as Read & Joy Forest, the forest library was developed by Pudong New Area and Shanghai Library. It is in an urban (城市的) green space area near Shanghai Library East. It can make visitors take a pleasant walk in the quiet and green forest. 

People tried not to harm the forest when building the forest library. The library is in the open air and has facilities (设施) such as benches and an information boot h (亭). Wooden walkways connect green spaces. 

"I learned about the forest library from my friends. so I came here," said a 21- year- old college(大学) student. "The green outdoor environment helps reduce eyestrain (视疲劳). I will come back for sure. "

Most of the visitors to the forest library are young people and parents with their children. They read carefully or take a walk slowly in the forest. "I like the fresh air and the trees here. I've spent the whole morning indoors and wanted to get some fresh air. The library makes it possible to enjoy reading in nature. I feel very relaxed here," said one reader sitting on a bench. 

Why don't you start a hobby? There are many hobbies you can enjoy. One of the best hobbies is collecting (收集). People collect many things. 

Stones are fun to collect. You don't have to go very far to find them. Very often you can find them just under your feet. You may have to dig (挖) a little. Some stones are pretty. Some stones are very expensive. 

People often like to collect buttons. Some like old buttons (纽扣). Others collect new ones. Buttons can be made of wood, glass, shells—almost anything. Some buttons are large and others are small. Some have pictures on them. Others do not. There are many different kinds. It's so much fun collecting buttons. 

Some people collect signatures (签名). They get their friends to write their names. Other people collect the signatures of famous people. Everyone writes names in a different way. Some names are not always easy to read. Different writings make signature collecting a lot of fun.

Everyone could find their own interest, some even at a very young age.

Tang Lei was born in 2017. Her mom Liang Hua worked in a supermarket in the past,  she lost her job in 2023. As a mother of two, she had to make money for her family. She could make cakes, so she started  (sell) cakes.
