Ruanmuhua ("softwood painting"）is a special Chinese art. It started in 1914 when a Chinese artist, Wu Qiqi, 1 a German postcard and created this beautiful art form. In 2008, it 2 as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产). 

Mr. Chen Kongguo, a lover of ruanmuhua, began to learn this art 3 thirteen. 4 74-year-old man comes from Fuzhou, Fujian Province. He 5 his whole life working on it. 

"We don't use pens or brushes. Instead, we carve (雕刻) the wood with special tools very carefully, " Chen says. 6 difficult work it is to make ruanmuhua! The artworks often show buildings, trees, or animals, but each artist usually focuses on one kind of them. That's 7 many artists work together on one piece. "We carve small parts first, then put them all together, " Chen explains. 

Every time Chen begins carving, he has to visit the building in person, and then uses a computer 8  a small model. "If 9 a small change, the whole work cannot be finished, " Chen says. 

After years of work, he now can understand Chinese buildings 10 enough. Though he's getting older, Chen still works hard. He wishes to teach more and more young people this art and keep it alive. 

In November, 2022, 56-year-old Deng Qingming went into space with two other astronauts Fei Junlong and Zhang Lu. After about 25 years of waiting, Deng 1 realized his dream of going into space. The three astronauts stayed in space for six 2 and returned to the earth in May, 2023. 

"25 years is a long journey. Many times, I3 the chance to enter space. Even though I felt upset, I never 4 , " Deng said.

Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you sit down to work and study, an hour feels like a year.    ▲   

It is all because of something small called dopamine (多巴胺) which is a "pleasure chemical" that makes people feel good. Our brains release it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we are praised. 

Compared with studying, eating chocolate can make your brain release 150% more dopamine, and exercising for 30 minutes raises it by 200%. But playing on smartphones creates much more dopamine. For example, watching short videos gives a 250% increase, and checking new messages makes dopamine jump by 400%—much higher than studying. But why?

When we go through social media, we don't know what we'll see next, or who will follow our posts. This uncertainty makes the dopamine active. Studying doesn't provide such uncertainty. Without the excitement of "gambling (赌博)", we get bored much more easily. 

Can we do something to change that? According to a research, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notifications or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on apps to avoid overusing them. 

As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward (奖赏) yourself for it. You could also explore interesting topics related to your textbook. Use what you've learned to make a difference in the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn. 

In the world of modern Chinese art, 37-year-old artist Chen Jianzhou stands out not only for his special artistic vision (艺术视野) but also for his unusual life story. Although he is not able to  well, he has achieved great success in art. He connects traditional Chinese culture  modern style, giving the Monkey King a new look and meaning. So far, he has  many awards for that. In 2024, he published a book called The Boy Who Drew Journey to the West which includes his  artwork and personal growth stories. 

Chen's journey hasn't been easy. He  his hearing at the age of three because of a high fever. "I went to a normal primary school at six. When my  saw me wearing a hearing aid, they called me dumb (哑巴) and hit me. Many times, I just let it go, but I didn't understand why they bullied (欺负) me, " he said. 

Journey to the West has been a source of strength (力量源泉) for Chen. " image of the Monkey King has always been in my mind. I feel like I'm him. I hope I could fly  like him, be as healthy as him, and have as many transformations (变化) as him, " he said. Based on the novel and  characters, Chen has created many lively and amazing paintings. 

With the rapid development of modern Chinese art, Chen's works have become known both at home  abroad. "I hope Chinese culture can be seen on the global stage, " said Chen.
