Linda, 29, nurse: I pay all my bills online. One day, I received an email from my bank. It told me that someone was trying to take out money from my account, so I should email my password(密码) to the "bank manager". I felt something was wrong, so I called my bank and asked about the email. The bank said they never sent it. I realised that someone tried to cheat me of my money. I'll continue paying my bills this way, but I'll be more careful.

Emily, 22, office worker: I was at work, and I sent an email to a friend of mine. I was telling her about my problems with Mark, the manager. A few minutes later, a friend of Mark's came over to my desk. He said, "So you think Mark is too strict?" My face was red. I chose the wrong name on my address list. It was my own mistake, so I look over my emails more carefully before I click "Send" next time.

Thomas, 21, university student: I love the Internet! I look up lots of information online. I often buy things on the websites--furniture, clothes, CDs, even foods. I have also sold some of my things on the Internet. I only use the websites I trust and I've never had a safety problem.

Which is more important to our lives, the Internet or the washing machine? Many of us might answer, "The Internet!" The Internet helps us gather information. It allows us to see our friends in real time.

However, Ha-Joon Chang, a professor at Cambridge University, doesn't agree. He believes the washing machine has changed the world more than the Internet. That sounds strange, but Chang is not alone. Many experts have called the washing machine the greatest invention of the 2o century. Why?

Let's be honest: How many of us love to do the laundry? It seems the cycle of the washing, drying and ironing never ends. It's so tiring and boring!

However, before the washing machine was invented, women had to spend lots of time washing clothes. Many of them suffered from back pain.

The washing machine freed women from the laundry. Many women found they had enough time to enter the labor market. As a result, the social status(社会地位)of women began to change. Today, most women can make an independent living. They don't have to rely on men any longer.

To better understand the influence of washing machines, we can look at societies without them. In many African countries, doing the laundry takes women six hours a day. Women there hardly have time to work or start a business. It is hard for them to find a way out of poverty(贫困). Perhaps things will be a lot different if they have washing machines.

We often take the washing machine for granted. But these machines do play an important role in our lives. They have greatly changed the world.

How do you usually express yourself? Do sports, or talk with the person you trust? Different people have different ways. Art is a good way for people to express themselves, Artists use different materials and tools. 

Some artists use paint.

Painters use brushes and paint to make pictures. They are usually around the life. Others are things artists imagine. That means they don't look like anything. 

Ceramic artists use clay.

Artists who use clay are called ceramic (陶瓷的) artists. Clay are shaped by hand into different pieces first, like sculptures (雕塑)and pottery,  This makes pieces of clay hard. Then they're polished and painted.

They catch what they see quickly with cameras. Photographers pay attention to light. They focus on people or things. They record beautiful scenery in time. Their images can tell a story.

Some artists work with glass.

What can glass be used for? More than cups, glass can be used to make art works. Artists who use glass are called glassblowers. They heat and melt(融化) pieces of glass,  Then they blow through a pipe(管) to form a shape. Varied glass pieces are really attractive.

Try these artistic ways to express yourself.

We need fresh water to survive. But most of Earth's water is undrinkable. It's in our ocean. It's saltwater. Only a small amount of the planet's water is fresh. And most of that is undrinkable. Some is polluted. Some is in ice caps. And some is kept in the air.

"We simply cannot use more water than we have," Rick Hogeboom says," In many places, people are using much more water than is available." But there is good news. We can help protect the water supply. One way is to pay close attention to our water footprint.

What's water footprint? It's a measure of how much water people use. It counts both direct and indirect use. Direct water is water that comes out of your tap. You might use it to wash your hands or do dishes. You might drink it. But tap-water use is just a part of your water footprint.

We use most water indirectly. We use it to produce goods and services.

What makes up the biggest part of your water footprint? "Food," Hogeboom says. In the United

States, clothes shopping can also make up a large part of your water footprint. A single pair of jeans takes almost 2,0o0 gallons to produce.

We must think carefully about our water footprint. That way, we can make sure all people have access to fresh water.
