An injured hiker was rescued earlier this month after a train passenger spotted her from the window. She was crazily waving on the other side of a river, having just spent two days trapped in the wilderness with a broken leg.

The rider told the train crew, who then reported it to the train inspector, Henry Smith, who was in a motor car behind them. Henry was able to stop and communicate with the woman on the opposite bank of the river, which was freezing cold and moving quickly.

The hiker, a woman in her twenties, had been missing for two days. She said she'd intended to go on a day hike, but ended up falling 90 feet down a cliff face while trying to take pictures. She reportedly told rescuers that she lost consciousness for an unknown amount of time. Despite a badly broken leg, she struggled to pull herself to the bank of the river to try to flag down trains. She had no emergency supplies with her, or suitable clothing to spend the night outdoors. There had been a cold attack while the woman was trapped in the wilderness. The hiker described spending daylight hours trying to get the attention of passing trains and, at night, would roll herself into a nearby cliff face in an attempt to stay warm.

Henry called to request help for search and rescue. The operator who received the emergency call said the hiker's family had been looking for her. While they were waiting for the rescue team, Nick and Kylah, an engineer and a fireman on the next train passing by the location, came to help. 327 passengers on the train waited on the track as they crossed the river to examine the woman's injuries and bring emergency supplies, blankets and a radio for communication. Eventually, a helicopter was sent to locate and rescue the hiker and she was transported safely to the hospital.

Riding on an exercise bike at home may keep you in physical shape, but it can get pretty boring after a while. Aaron Puzey had been on his exercise bike for half an hour a day for years when he decided to look for a way to make it a bit more fun.

With virtual reality technology widely available nowadays, all he needed to do was find a way of applying it to his needs. So he set out to build an app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset ( 头戴式视图器) which would allow him to hook it up to Google Street View and make it seem like he's cycling through different real-life locations.

Building the app to download the 3D data from Street View and make it viewable in the VR headset was the toughest part of his project. Other than that, all he needed to do was tape a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike. Although the quality of the images sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, leaving complex scenes like trees looking like a mess, Aaron has been having a lot of fun on his journey.

Aaron's project is obviously no substitute (替代品) for real outdoor cycling as it lacks things like the wind blowing in your face or the pain of battling an uphill climb, but it has given him a goal as well as the chance to take in the beauty of places he might have otherwise never seen. It definitely beats staring at a wall or at the TV for 30 minutes, anyway. 

Obviously, Aaron's set up theoretically allows him to ride a bike anywhere around the world. He says he has always wanted to see Japan, so once his ride comes to an end, he plans to start another one across the Land of the Rising Sun.

In London, black taxis and their drivers have become the focus of a new exploration into Alzheimer's (阿兹 海默症). For those on the outside, it may seem that behind the wheel of these black taxis are just regular people who help move us to our destinations. But within their brains is a map of London's streets that has put GPS technology to shame for decades.

"The Knowledge", the test for London's taxi drivers, stands among the hardest mental examinations one could ever undergo. It involves recalling information repeatedly from the memory of minute details about 56,0000 streets in London, from Trafalgar Square to the tiniest residential lanes.

Normally, the hippocampus (海马体) feels the effects of Alzheimer's most. University College London and Alzheimer's Research UK are  studying these taxi  drivers ' brains,  as it has been found that the hippocampus controlling the brain's short-term memory and spatial ( 空 间 的) memory  systems is enlarged in their brains. Moreover, the taxi drivers ' hippocampi continue to enlarge as they go on doing the job for more years, suggesting that perhaps there's something we can do to reproduce the effect in the general population.

Lead researcher Hugo Spiers was part of the team which 20 years ago found that, like birds and squirrels, the taxi drivers ' hippocampi gradually got bigger. Indeed, research has found for years that any animal that requires a detailed spatial knowledge of their territory experiences growth in the hippocampus.

Spiers' team hopes to deal with Alzheimer's by studying the taxi drivers' brains. To collect more information on the mechanisms (机制) that cause the "brain gain", Spiers has asked thirty of London's taxi drivers connected to an MRI machine to drive around on their routes. The machine will allow the researchers to gather real time observations of the workings of the hippocampus. "It's been a joy to help scientists fight with the disease," said taxi driver Robert Lordan.

It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood. 

But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults.     Those emotions include anger, alertness, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense over time.

According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short "feel good" period. However, as they begin to consume the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling.    As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people being tired and less alert.

  According to WHO, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as they make up less than 5 percent of our daily total energy intake.  

So the next time you feel tired and can't concentrate on study and work, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness.

B. So cutting sweet food out of the diet is a good choice.

C. They studied the effect of sugar on some aspects of mood.

Grace William's mother was a librarian, who read to her children every night. It was her mother who made her  1  to books.

I was one of the people who came from all parts of China to work on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

I was the fifth among the seven children in my family. We all went to the same public school. Every year, my mother went to the same scene and had parent-child interviews with the same teachers. The only thing different was the child. And every child participated in an old school tradition  — the annual plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother's Day.

The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached third grade. In early May she came to me full of wonder and secrecy and told me that there was going to be a plant sale at school, and she wanted to surprise our mother. As my older sister did for me, I gave her some money and off she went.
