You are running around in the park. But then suddenly, you fall and hurt yourself. "Ow!" you cry. This sound is very familiar to us all. Crying out when we get hurt is a natural reaction. But what is it about this sound that makes us shout it out?

 Scientists from the National University of Singapore now believe they've found the answer. The effort of shouting the word "ow" actually interferes (干预) with pain messages traveling to the brain. So by shouting it out, it distracts us from the feeling of pain. 

The scientists tested how long volunteers could hold their hands in very cold water. There were five rounds of the test. In the first round, they were allowed to shout "ow" when they felt pain. In another round, they had to stay silent. 

The results showed that volunteers were able to keep their hands in the cold water for longer when they were allowed to shout out. They managed around 30 seconds on average, five seconds more than when they had to remain silent. 

"We found that a simple vocal act such as saying ‘ow' helps individuals deal with pain," the report from the scientists stated. 

 What's more, expressions of pain are shared among languages. While cries of "ow" or "ouch" are heard in English, South Africans yell "eina", Italians shout "ahia" and Chinese "aiyo". 

Scientists said in the report: "Shared among these languages is a sound during which the mouth simply opens, the tongue lies flat (水平的) and the lips unrounded. It is a simple sound that requires little control while maximizing (充分利用) the volume. " So these sounds are useful to shout if we feel pain. 

Have you ever seen lions dancing in the streets? The lions dance to the beat of a drum (鼓). Of course, they are not real lions. They are dancers in lion costumes (服饰). Lion dancing first started in China centuries ago. It is meant to bring good luck in the coming year. 

Usually, a lion is made up of two dancers. One dancer controls the head. The other controls the tail. 

"I think of it as a sport," says Anthony Huang, aged 16. He is a member of the New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club. Anthony performs (表演) as the lion's head. It can weigh 20 pounds. Lion dancing is important to Anthony. "This tradition really lifts me up," he says. 

In the past, lion dancing was performed mostly by men. But it is different today. LionDanceMe is a lion dancing group in San Francisco, California. There are boys and girls on its team. They dance together. "Anyone can take up lion dancing. You have to believe that you can do it," says Ananda Tang-Lee, a 17-year-old girl. 

Lion dancing will continue to evolve. But a team's sense of community will never change. "We call it a family," Ananda says, "It's really great, because we always have each other's backs. "

Paul gets a birthday present—a car. On the evening before birthday, Paul gets out of a shop and sees a boy near his new car.

For 16﹣year﹣old Ma Yifei, the violin performance of the Beijing 2022 Olympic theme song, Snowflake, was her best present for Paralympians (残奥运动员) all over the world. Even though snowflakes are related to winter, she let others feel warmth, hope and light through her performance. 

Ma went blind at the age of two because of an illness. She became interested in music when she was young. She started to learn to play the piano at five and the violin at nine, experiencing the "colorful" music through sound and emotion. 

Ma's mother Ha Chunyan, a former music teacher in a primary school, helped her memorize the music score (乐谱) before she played the piano. Ma could not see the keys and always played the wrong notes. It took her thousands of tries to play a piece correctly. 

Learning the violin was more challenging. Ma needed to feel the teacher hands, arms and back to learn the movements, and listen to the strings (弦) over and over again to feel the muscles (肌肉) herself. 

"After three years of learning, she still could not make any sound except terrible noises," said Ha, who advised her daughter to give up the violin. But Ma said, "As I've been practising so long, it's hard to give up I believe I will play better if I persist in practising. "

In 2018, Ma got a chance to follow Sheng Yuan and Cao Yuhan, famous musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music, to study music in Beijing. She left her home in Ningxia to follow her musical dream, though she knew there would be more challenges ahead. 

Ma expressed her excitement about performing at the big event. "All my hard work has paid off. I'm proud of standing on the stage today. "

Qin Yuqing is a member of the national freestyle roller skating team. Recently, the National Freestyle Roller Skating Championship (锦标赛) was held in Lishui, Zhejiang. She won the adult Women's Freestyle Roller Skating Style Round. 

Born in the year 2004, Qin has already won a lot of championships. Qin began her roller skating journey when she was just 6 years old. Her parents supported her very much. After they knew Qin's love for roller skating, they quickly helped her sign up for the sport. From that moment on, she spent most of her time on daily practice. 

Qin practiced roller skating mostly at night because she had to study at school during the day. She faced challenges including a serious fall. That left her with a scar (伤疤). But she regarded it as a symbol of her personal growth. What was more, she once fell in the middle of a competition (尴尬), but quickly that feeling went away and she stood up again. 

Qin wants to show wonderful Chinese traditional culture to more and more people. To ensure (确保) the elegance (优雅) of Chinese culture is perfectly shown in roller skating competitions, each of her clothes for competition is well designed and shows Chinese culture to others. For example, some of them are full of Dunhuang style. "I want to be more than just a roller skater. I hope to be an ambassador (大使) of Chinese culture," Qin said.

To guide students to enjoy and copy famous Chinese paintings, a teacher at No. 150 High School of Changchun, Duan Yingzi, set up a painting club  the end of 2022. The club was made up of 21 students. 

She chose "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" by Wang Ximeng during the Northern Song Dynasty. She  (bring) it into class so that her students could enjoy and copy. Duan thought since Wang created the painting at the age of 18, her students, at a similar a could give it a try. She encouraged her club members to take part in the painting project. 

The project began in early March. It took the students 129 days to d it on the walls of their fine art classroom. They added persons, flowers and other elements (元素) into their painting, including their own inspirations. The painting was 11 meters l and 3. 5 meters tall. 

Though some parents were worried that the p would take up a lot of time and was not good for children's schoolwork, the students thought the process of painting not only i confidence (信心), but it was also a way to relax after learning. 

"Seeing the work we created, I could feel what Wang was feeling when he  (successful) completed this painting. " said a student who took part in the project. "It was as if I were enjoying the rivers and mountains with him. "

Duan hopes that through copying the Chinese painting, the students will improve their understanding of Chinese painting and pass on the excellent traditional culture in a creative way.
