11. A group of university graduates visited their old professor. During their visit, the conversation turned to work. The graduates were1 about their problems and stress in work and in life. After putting a pot of coffee on the table, the professor went to the kitchen and came back with many2 cups: glass, plastic and crystal. Some cups were simple, others were expensive. The professor asked them to pick out their cups first. When the graduates picked out their favorite cups, the professor3, "Notice how all the beautiful cups were picked out and the simple and cheap ones were left."
"Wanting only the best things for yourself4 your problems and stress. You need to understand that the cup doesn't make the coffee better.5, all that you wanted was the coffee, not the cup. But you consciously (有意识地)6 the best cups, and then looked to see what cups others picked."
"Your7 is the coffee. Your job, money, position in society…they are the cups. The type of cup doesn't decide the8 of life. Plains wanderers (领鹑) are small, rare birds that live in grasslands. Unlike most birds, female plains wanderers are larger and stronger than males. Females take the lead in protecting their homes and babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs to keep them warm. These birds are hard to find because their feathers blend (融合) into the grass, making them look like part of the landscape. It seems that they are invisible due to their feathers. Sadly, their numbers have been dropping because people are taking over their grassland homes for farms and cities.
To save them, scientists are using AI. The key is the birds' calls. Mother wanderers make soft sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These mothers' calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI can hear them clearly. Scientists put microphones in the grasslands to record sounds all day and night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program to analyze (分析) them. The AI learns to tell the wanderers' calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.
"AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them," says Dr. Lee, who leads the project. "We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places." Once, the AI helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds. Without AI, they might not have found it. Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a powerful tool in saving wildlife.

13.

The small Paris café was filled with the smell of coffee and people's chatter. I sat across from Charles Strickland at a wooden table. Once a rich businessman in fine suits, he now wore an old coat with white paint on its sleeves.
When I asked him why he left his wife and two children and moved to this place, he remained calm and cold, explaining that painting had become as important to him as breathing to a living creature. Forty years old as he was, he believed this was his final opportunity to change his life. "My relatives will take care of my family," he said without any regret, as if his children were strangers he had met only once.
For more than a year, he had lied to his wife by telling her he was playing cards with friends in the evenings, but he was taking art classes to learn painting in fact. With his hands shaking slightly, he said in an anxious voice, "I have to paint. When a man falls into the water, it doesn't matter how he swims; he has to get out or else he'll drown (溺水)."
When I asked him, "What will you do if you never become successful?" he just repeated, "I have to paint." There was no sign of doubt or regret in his words. It was clear that he had completely turned down the normal rules of society. "I will not follow a path set by others," he added.
Looking at his worn shoes and fingers with different colors of paint, I finally said, "You have become a heartless man." To my surprise, he just stood up calmly, adjusted his old hat, and suggested, "Let's go find somewhere to eat." Around us, waiters cleared tables while people laughed and drank coffee. These happy sounds felt strange after our serious talk, like sunshine breaking through storm clouds.

14. Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each. When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin's story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it. Only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled are actually recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies (政策). The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property (财产) once it's on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence (证据), but that protection hasn't always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from mice, containers are made clearly inaccessible (难得到的) for collectors.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the companies", says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with respect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. "Because I recycle it doesn't mean I am less of a person than anyone else," she says. Some governments are taking action because they realize that protecting the environment and humanity should go hand in hand.
(1)、What is the author's purpose of telling about Marin?A、To explain why Marin left her country. B、To show how recycling benefits the poor. C、To describe Marin's difficult life and work. D、To introduce the topic through a personal story.(2)、What problem do waste pickers face according to Paragraph 3?A、They are protected by the police. B、They have to fight with the police. C、They are stopped by government policies. D、They need to help the police look for evidence.(3)、What does Ryan Castalia believe about recyclable waste?A、Its economic value is often forgotten. B、It needs better protection from the city. C、Its value should be shared by the public. D、It should be managed by nonprofit organizations.(4)、What can we infer from Marin's experience of being thrown water?A、She was collecting cans in a wrong place. B、Waste pickers are often looked down upon. C、Local people were protecting their privacy. D、Waste pickers have no interest in their jobs.(5)、In which part of a newspaper can we probably find the passage?A、Society. B、Fashion. C、Business. D、Technology.七、第二节

Get out of your comfort zone (舒适区). It is always comfortable to stay in your familiar area. However, in order to discover yourself, you need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. You can do some outdoor activities you are afraid of. This will give you a chance to learn more about how you feel, think and react when the challenge comes.
It is also a powerful way to discover things about yourself. When you are in a different place, you may have a chance to rethink what you always believe.
