On Sunday, Leo walked to the Centennial Park. Picnic tables and people were everywhere. Where was the party?

Then he saw a sign that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NOAH!" He went up to the party.

None of the kids at the party looked familiar. "Where's Noah?" Leo asked a boy.

"He has something important to do. He should be here soon," the boy said. "I'm Will. Join us and play soccer with us." Leo liked soccer. He had a great time playing with the children.

"I thought of that. But I promised I'd come."

"I'm glad you did," said Noah. "Let's play soccer!"

As they played, Will rode by on his bike.

"Hey, Leo," Will yelled. "Come and play with us again next week!"

    "OK," Leo said.

"Mother, please sit down and let me do it," said Fred, a twelve-year-old boy. His mother was trying to clear away the breakfast that she hadn't tasted. She looked pale and tired.

"You, Fred, you wash dishes?" she smiled and said.

"Yes, Mother," replied Fred. "I've watched you do it many times. I'm sure I can do it well. Please let me try."

His mother felt happy and sat down in her chair. Fred washed the dishes and put them in the cupboard (碗柜). Then he swept the kitchen and washed the potatoes so that his mother could easily make dinner. After that, he left for school.

After school, Fred hurried home. He set the table and washed the dishes again.

He kept on in this way for a few days until his mother became well again. One day, their family doctor came. "Do you know why you got well quickly? That's because you had a good rest," said the doctor. Fred felt that his hard work was worth it.

In order to help his mother, he gave up many fun things during those days. Although it was the perfect season for skating, he didn't go. He used to go to school early and stay late to play, but he stopped doing that.

The boys wondered why he no longer played with them. "I'll find out his secret," said Tom. So when he went to get Fred to school, he looked through the kitchen window and saw Fred washing dishes. Then Tom reported this at school.

During the break, the boys laughed at Fred. "Girl boy!" "Pretty Bessie!" "Lost your apron (围裙), haven't you, Polly!"

Fred was angry at the insulting (侮辱的) words and wanted to fight back, but he didn't. He managed to control himself. He knew he had been doing the right thing. Just at that time, his teacher appeared and said, "Don't give up! It's truly brave to have self-control and stick to the right things."

  • 14.  阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Wetlands (湿地) are watery places. Wetlands have many kinds of plants and animals. Native (本地的) plants grow near the water. They give food and home to animals. But if purple loosestrife (千屈菜) grows there, there is not enough room for native plants to grow. Without food and home, the plants and animals disappear. The balance (平衡) of nature is gone. That's why purple loosestrife is called a wetland monster (怪物).

Where did purple loosestrife come from?

Loosestrife is a native plant in Europe and Asia. Some people used it as medicine. It came to North America in the 1800s. People think that the seeds of purple loosestrife were carried across the ocean on ships. Why did purple loosestrife grow out of control?

Purple loosestrife didn't grow out of control in Europe and Asia. That was because it had natural enemies like beetles (甲虫). Beetles ate loosestrife. They were part of the same ecosystem. Loosestrife came to North America, but its natural enemies did not. As a result, loosestrife grew taller and stronger. Native wetland plants had no place to grow. Soon the native plants began to die.

    How do the seeds travel?

Each loosestrife plant can produce almost three million seeds a year. The seeds are tiny and light. The wind can carry the seeds far. Seeds can also travel to other places by sticking to animals' fur (软毛) and people's clothes and shoes. Almost all the seeds will grow.

How to stop the wetland monster?

People have used chemicals (化学品) and other ways to try to kill loosestrife, but it always grew back. Scientists needed to find a better way to protect the wetlands. After years of study and research, they found beetles that primarily ate loosestrife. They caught some from Europe and kept them in the United States. Then they put the beetles into wetlands. The beetles ate the loosestrife and stopped it from spreading.

Now native plants are growing again. Frogs, birds, and fish are coming back.

(1)、Why is purple loosestrife called a wetland monster?
A、Because it kills animals. B、Because it is not a native plant. C、Because it grows tall and strong. D、Because it breaks the balance of nature.
(2)、What does the underlined word "seeds" mean?
    A、种子 B、藤蔓 C、茎 D、根
(3)、Why was loosestrife out of control in North America?
A、Because it could produce many seeds. B、Because its seeds were easy to carry far. C、Because it had no natural enemies there. D、Because its seeds could grow easily there.
(4)、What helped the scientists stop the purple loosestrife from spreading?
A、Native plants. B、Native animals. C、Beetles that primarily eat loosestrife. D、Chemicals and other ways.
(5)、What's the best title of the passage?
A、The Wetlands. B、The Wetland Monster. C、The Balance of Wetlands. D、The Protection for Wetlands.

As she walked, the ground shook. "You are making too much noise!" a monkey shouted.

"Sorry about that. I  (try) to tiptoe (踮着脚走) from now on! By the way, would you like to be my friend?"

"You  (not have) a tail and are too heavy to swing through the trees. Why would I want to hang out with you?"

The elephant sighed (叹气). Her feelings  (hurt)!

Then she saw a frog (青蛙) swimming in the river.

"Hello, Mr Frog! Would you like to be my friend?"

"Can you jump?" asked the frog.

"No, I can't," the elephant was embarrassed.

"Well, we can't be friends, then!" The frog swam away.

    The elephant sighed deeply.

"  (get) out of my way, elephant!" he shouted.

"I think you  (go) away and leave them alone!" the elephant cleared her throat and said. The tiger got angry and jumped at the elephant. The elephant made a very loud noise—ROAR! The loud noise scared the tiger away!

After a while, the other animals came back.

"Where's the tiger?" asked the frog.

    "He  (leave)," the elephant smiled.

"Gosh, did you scare that tiger away? You're so brave," said the monkey.

The fox lowered his head. "You stood up for us, even after we were unfriendly!"

The frog said, "If it's OK, I'd like to spend time with you. After all, friends can come in many shapes and sizes."

One great example comes from Ethan Wargo, age 9, who set up a cookie stand (货摊) in his neighbourhood. Instead of hoping to make money, Ethan wanted to lift people's spirits. As people came to his stand, he talked with them first. Then he carefully chose something real about the person and offered a sincere (真诚的) compliment. Soon, many people began visiting the stand to hear a kind word. "At first, I just wanted to lift people's spirits. To my surprise, everyone got more than I expected. For me, I have more and more friends," Ethan explained.

"Ethan told me, You are a kind boy. You are always helpful to others. These words not only make me happy, but also encourage me to keep doing good things for the neighbourhood!" a teenager shared.

Compliments let us see the best in ourselves and help build confidence. Besides, they remind us that we are all connected. Even though March 1 is World Compliment Day, we don't need a special day to share kind words. Give one today!

There are four kinds of compliments:

The way a person looks (For example, I like your new haircut.)

The things a person does (For example, you are a great basketball player.)

The way a person behaves (For example, you are a kind friend.)

The things a person has (For example, your new shoes are cool.)

(1)、What benefits of compliments can you find from Ethan's story?
(2)、If you visit Ethan's stand, what sincere compliments might Ethan give you? Please write two.(不要照抄原文中的句子)
    (3)、将短文中画线句子译成汉语。
    (4)、请给短文拟一个适当的英文标题。

五、书面表达。
