Marie Curie: A Pioneer in Science
Marie Curie was one of the greatest scientists in history. She was born in Poland in 1867. At that time, women were not allowed to study at universities in Poland, so she went to France to study.
In 1895, she married Pierre Curie, a French scientist. Together, they studied radioactive materials. In 1898, they discovered two new elements: polonium and radium. Marie was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes—one in Physics in 1903 and another in Chemistry in 1911.
During World War I, Marie used X-ray machines to help wounded soldiers. She also trained other women to use these machines. After the war, she continued her research and founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw.
Marie Curie died in 1934 from illness caused by her long-term exposure to radioactive materials. Her work has influenced many scientists and helped save millions of lives.
