Last summer, I went to India alone, and I experienced a big culture shock.

In China, we 1 nodding our heads to say yes and shaking our heads to say no. I thought this body language was2 everywhere. However, things are different in India.

On the first morning, I got lost on my way to a local ancient palace. I walked up to a kind-looking local man and asked politely, "Excuse me, is the palace near here?" 3 , he shook his head slowly with a big smile. I felt 4 and left, thinking it was far away. Later, I went to a restaurant and asked the waiter if the food was too spicy (辛辣的). Again, he shook his head gently. I left 5 ordering anything because I was afraid that the food would be too spicy for me.

A: Someone forgot to unplug the charger (拔掉充电器) in a bedroom.

B: What a lesson to learn! We should be careful about house fires.

A:  And do you know how to save ourselves from a fire?

B: Yes. I think we should run out of the house first if there is enough time.

A:  The smoke from the fire can be very dangerous.
 

[Nils, a young Swedish boy, is standing next to a desk. His parents are by the door, ready to leave.]

Mother: Nils, we're going out. Make sure you study, and don't be mean to the farm animals.

Nils: I haven't been mean to the animals in ages.

Father: Yesterday you pulled the cat's tail.

Mother: And you ran after the hens.

Father: And we've just caught you throwing shoes at the cow.

Nils: [Laughing.] Okay. I promise to be good!

[Nils's parents shake their heads and leave. Nils sighs (叹息) and sits down.]

Nils: Reading is so boring! I haven't had any fun for so long. I wish something would happen.

[An elf (精灵) enters quietly through the front door. Nils sees it.]

Nils: An elf! I've never seen one of those before… I'm going to catch it!

[Nils catches the elf]

Elf: [Screaming.] Let me go! I'll give you an old coin.

Nils: I'm not sure… What else have you got?

Elf: A silver spoon… and a big gold (金) coin!

Nils: Okay… I could let you go.

Elf: Thank you!

Nils: But actually, I don't think I will. Come here!

[There is a loud BANG, and Nils falls over. When he gets up, the elf has disappeared, and Nils has become smaller. The elf has turned him into another elf.]

Nils: Where has that elf gone? And why has the desk got bigger?

[He walks outside and sees a cat, a hen, and a cow. All are now bigger than him.]

Nils: Wow, the animals have grown bigger too.

Cat: We haven't got bigger, Nils. You've got smaller.

Hen: You're smaller than us now, actually.

Cow: You've been mean to us, Nils. And now you're going to pay the price.

Nils: Oh, I'm really sorry about all that. But look, could you help me find that elf? I need him to turn me back into a boy.

Cat: Get him!

At noon on 24 May 1960, four Chinese climbers stood on the "roof of the world". They were near the top of a thirty-metre-high wall of rock. It was called the Second Step. The top of Mount Qomolangma seemed right within reach. But no one had ever climbed the last few metres of the Second Step before.

Liu Lianman went first. He tried four times. Each time, he fell back into the snow. The thin air took his strength away. "I'm not strong enough to try again," he thought. So he chose to be a "human ladder" for his teammates! He lowered his body and let Qu Yinhua stand on his shoulders. Bit by bit, Liu stood up and helped Qu climb to the top. Every second was painful, but Liu stood calm and quiet. And he did the same for Gong Bu. Then he and Wang Fuzhou climbed up with a rope.

But Liu was too tired to continue. ▲ They gave Liu all their oxygen (氧气). It was dangerous to climb without oxygen, but they knew Liu needed it. They made every effort through the cold and dark. Hours later, at 4:20 am on 25 May, they successfully reached the top! They were the first Chinese to do so! They were also the first people to climb the difficult North Ridge. What's more, no one had done so without using oxygen before!

When they returned to base camp, they were welcomed as heroes. People cheered for Liu, too. He did not reach the top, but he shouldered his team into China's mountaineering history.

The ocean is far more than just blue water. If you dive down from the surface, you will pass through five different layers (层). Each layer has its own light, temperature, and special sea creatures (生物).

The first layer is the Sunlit Layer, from the surface down to about 200 metres. Plenty of sunlight can reach this area. Because it is warm and bright, it is home to most well-known sea animals, like seals, whales, and sea turtles.

Deeper down is the Twilight Layer, from 200 to 1,000 metres. There is much less sunlight here, and it gets colder slowly. Animals like lantern fish and sharks are common visitors. They are used to living under the weak light.

If we keep going deeper, we will enter the Midnight Layer, 1,000 to 4,000 metres deep. No sunlight can reach this place at all. It is totally dark and freezing cold. To survive, some special fish can make light by themselves. Some even have special stomachs so that they can eat fish much bigger than themselves.

Below that is the Abyss, from 4,000 to 6,000 metres. The water pressure here is extremely (极度) strong. Only a few tough creatures like sea pigs can live in such terrible conditions.

The deepest part is the Hadal Layer, deeper than 6,000 metres. It is a world of complete darkness and huge water pressure. Giant tube worms are one of the few lucky creatures that can survive in this extreme environment.

The ocean hides countless secrets. From the bright top to the dark bottom, every layer is a magical home for different lives.

Recently, a Chinese film named Dear You has become an unexpected big box office hit (爆款影片).  it is a low-budget movie, many people recommend it. The movie is based  real historical events and is filmed in the Chaoshan dialect (方言). This helps provide a clear  (describe) of local life.

The story is about a family discovery. A grandson travels to Thailand to borrow money from his grandfather to pay off his heavy debts (债). There, the grandson finds a(n)  (hide) secret. A Thai-Chinese woman sent letters and money to his grandmother in his grandfather's name for 18 years. She was willing to do this  (simple) to keep a promise.

In Chinese history, these letter-money packages (包裹) were called Qiaopi. For the families left behind, these packages  (be) more than money. They helped people survive and provided  emotional connection.

The movie shows many Chaoshan traditions like Gongfu tea and Yingge Dance. However, what makes the audience cry is the women. They pushed  (they) to stay strong and showed a deep love that could cross oceans.

Today, many young people live in a fast-paced life. This movie encourages them  (slow) down and listen to the stories of the older generations. As one person wrote after  (watch) the film, "It reminds us that behind every elderly person, there was once a story of youth, passion, and deep love."

Located in northeastern Sichuan Province, the Luojiaba Site lies in Puguang Town, Xuanhan County, Dazhou City. It sits at a special place where ancient Qin, Chu, Ba and Shu cultures met. With rivers and mountains around it, this huge area is a very important cradle (摇篮) of ancient civilization in Southwest China

The site has a long history of about 5,300 years. People lived here for more than 3,000 years, from the late Stone Age to the Han Dynasty. The ancient Ba people, especially the Cong tribe (賨人部落), lived mostly in Luojiaba. The Ba people were brave and clever. Far away from the centre of China, they created their own special and great culture and lived here for hundreds of years.

After years of digging, archaeologists (考古学家) have found many amazing things here. These include beautiful bronze weapons, pots, jade objects, and high-class tombs. They also found turtle shells and deer antlers. These things present a full picture of the Ba people's life and social culture.

Today, Luojiaba is one of the largest and best-preserved (保存最完好的) Ba culture sites in China. It is known as one of the greatest treasures of Bashu culture after Sanxingdui. It fills the gap (空白) of historical records of the ancient Ba Kingdom, offering valuable first-hand information to experts.

For modern people, Luojiaba is a window into the mysterious past. It shows us that ancient China had many different cultures. We can also see how smart ancient people were. At the same time, it helps local tourism and teaches young people to love their hometown and understand the importance of protecting their culture for the future.
