When Steve first moved to Sichuan, China, with his parents as a Canadian exchange student at the age of 12, he could only say simple greeting words. But since then, he has learned a lot about the Chinese language.

One thing that Steve really likes about Chinese is that there are plenty of strange words, like dong xi. The first time he heard this word from his Chinese friends, he didn't understand and felt quite curious. They would say qu mai dong xi. How could they buy two directions? He asked them, "Can we buy nan bei?" Li Wei laughed and said, "You can't buy nan bei, but you can zou nan chuang bei—travel north and south. It means going to many places." His friends then told him a story. Since most markets in ancient China were set up from east to west, people used dong xi to mean things. Steve thought this was amazing and he said, "So dong xi is for buying, and nan bei is for traveling?" Li Wei nodded. Steve laughed, "Then I prefer zou nan chuang bei to just buying dong xi!"

Now, Steve really enjoys studying Chinese. He believes it's not only about learning a new language but also about understanding a different culture. Every strange word has a story behind it. Learning a new language seems to be a challenge, but it is also full of fun surprises.

Jiuzhaigou lies in the northwest of Sichuan Province. It is a well-known natural wonder and thousands of visitors come here every year.

Jiuzhaigou is famous for its beautiful lakes and breathtaking waterfalls. One of the most famous lakes is Five Flower Lake. Its water is so clear that you can see the fish at the bottom. People say it's a piece of sky that fell to the ground. Its water also changes color from blue to green and even yellow, depending on the light and minerals (矿物质) in the water. Nuorilang Waterfall is also a must-see. It's one of the widest travertine waterfalls (钙华瀑布) in the world. In winter, it turns into a wonderful ice fall. In autumn, the leaves around the lakes turn red, orange and yellow, making the whole place look like colorful paintings.

Besides the beautiful views, there is a lovely old story about this place. Long long ago, the god of the mountain named Dago fell in love with the goddess Semo. He gave the goddess a mirror made from wind and clouds. She was happy to get it. However, some days later, a bad person appeared and wanted to hurt Semo. Semo broke the mirror into 108 pieces by accident.

The pieces fell down to the earth and then turned into 108 colorful lakes. The interesting story makes the beautiful place even more magical and unforgettable for all visitors.
