Mark Boyle, who was born in Ireland, has lived for a year without spending any money. The smiling man said that it had been the happiest year of his life, and that he would continue his new lifestyle.

Mark had not been very happy with his life before he changed his lifestyle. He admitted that he sometimes felt a little lonely. "I'm fine now. Instead of going out with my friends, I make campfires, play music and go for walks." he said.

①A major rainstorm had been warned about for several days. Finally one afternoon, it came suddenly. Melanie had just returned home from school when the sky got unusually dark and the wind began to blow hard. She hurried to shut the windows to keep the rain from pouring in. Luckily, her parents got home from work before the weather turned terribly bad.

②Then, all of a sudden, the skies opened up. The rain poured down as if someone had overturned a huge bucket of water. It beat heavily against the roofs and rushed down the streets. It made a loud drumbeat on the window and ran like a river down driveways. It was raining so heavily that Melanie could hardly see through the windows, but she could clearly hear the wind screaming. It blew the tree branches around.

③Before long, the wind rose from a low sound to a loud cry. Then, the power went out. For a moment, everyone sat quietly. Melanie felt her way to the kitchen for flashlights. Her father got lanterns and her mother pulled some blankets from the closet. They sat comfortably in the living room, waiting for the storm to pass.

④After a while, Melanie's family were hungry. They took flashlights to the kitchen and found potato chips and cookies. They ate sandwiches in the living room and told scary stories to calm down. Finally, everyone fell asleep.

⑤By the next morning, the storm had blown away. There were fallen tree branches on the ground, and everything was wet. But everyone was safe, and nothing was broken. Melanie and her family felt lucky. It was a special adventure!

In the UK, people ride taxis, ferries, and buses. These are common in other countries, too. But there are many other special kinds of public transportation around the world.

Tuk tuk

In Thailand, for example, you can ride a bright-colored tuk tuk, which is a small three-wheeled motorized vehicle (三轮机动车辆). It can run fast through narrow streets. One person drives the tuk tuk while two or three passengers sit in the open back.

Cocotaxi

The cocotaxi is another kind of public transportation in Cuba. It gets its name from its round coconut shape. This is a motorized vehicle that can carry two or three passengers. It is a small cart-like vehicle that has only three wheels.

Jeepney

In addition to the motorized transportation vehicles mentioned above, the jeepney is yet another popular vehicle that is found in the Philippines. A jeepney is a colorful bus with beautiful paintings on its body. It can carry many people at once.

Cyclo

There are also forms of public transportation that are not motorized, such as the cyclo in Vietnam (越南). This is a cycle that has three wheels. The driver sits behind the passengers, so passengers can enjoy street views easily.

Rickshaw

Another form of public transportation that does not have a motor is the hand rickshaw in India. When you ride on one of these rickshaws, a person pulls you as you sit in your seat. This rickshaw has two large wheels and is still used in old towns.

If you travel the world, you will see some forms of public transportation are shared by different countries. You will also see some transportation vehicles that are unique to certain places. They are not just travel tools, but also important parts of local culture.

Being conscientious (尽责的) isn't always easy but it's a great life skill to develop.

Have you ever heard someone being described as conscientious? Conscientiousness is a skill or quality. Experts have found that conscientious people are more likely to do well in their work and have good relationships with others. 

Know what conscientious means.

Being conscientious means wanting to do your work or duty well. You try your best and don't give up when things get hard. You also do tasks without being asked.  For example, a conscientious person follows rules, does homework early and carefully, stays with difficult tasks, and helps others without being told.

Sticking to tasks when they get hard is a key part of being conscientious. Child expert Laura Gwilt says, "Sticking with things doesn't mean working non-stop. It means finding ways to keep moving forward, even one small step at a time." When things get hard, try not to stop. Gwilt adds, "When you continue instead of giving up, you show yourself that effort matters as much as the result. Mistakes are a normal part of learning. Each time you finish something challenging, you feel proud, and that builds confidence."

Make plans and keep them.

Another step to be more conscientious is to keep your plans. If you plan to go to a new club or do your homework after school, make it happen. Following through shows others that they can trust and depend on you—important skills as you grow up.
