Last month, our class organized a meaningful trip to a local nature reserve. Before we set out, our teacher gave us some advice. She said, "It is necessary  (follow) the rules strictly." We were told that we must not harm any wild animals because many of them are endangered.

During the trip, I accidentally damaged a signpost. At first, I was afraid of being punished, so I thought about hiding the truth. However, I  (encourage) by my best friend to be honest. He reminded me that honesty is one of the most important  (thing). Hearing his words, I felt ashamed of my cowardice (怯懦). Finally, I went to the park keeper and apologized for my mistake. To my surprise, he didn't blame me but praised me for acting  (brave).

Harry: I've just been in China for a short time and messed up with gestures and words. I once pointed at people directly and used some improper expressions.

The Green Hope Project

The Green Hope Project is a volunteer programme in Yunnan Province. It focuses on protecting wild animals and their habitats. Many middle school students, including some from Shanghai, have joined it during their summer holidays.

The volunteers live in a nature reserve. Their main job is to help scientists collect information about the local wildlife, especially the Asian elephants. They also plant trees to restore the forest, which is the elephants' natural home.

Last summer, David, a Grade 7 student, took part in this project. His day usually started at 6:00 a.m. While the sun was rising, he and his team were walking into the forest to check the cameras they had set up. These special cameras could take photos when animals walked by. One morning, David was looking at the photos when he saw a wonderful sight: a mother elephant and her baby drinking water by the river. "It was amazing!" David said. "We must protect their habitat, or they will have nowhere to live."

ThePrice of a Miracle (奇迹)

Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had little money. Only a very expensive surgery (手术) could save him. She heard Dad say to her tearful (哭泣的) Mom, "Only a miracle can save him now."

Tess went to her bedroom and took out a piggybank. She poured all the coins out on the floor and counted carefully — one dollar and eleven cents in all. And then she slipped out (溜出去) the back door and went to the drugstore (药店).

"And what do you want?" the pharmacist (药剂师) asked her. Without waiting for a reply to his question, he added, "I'm talking to my brother from Chicago, where he works as a doctor."

"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered. "He is really, really sick… and I want to buy a miracle. My dad says only a miracle can save him now."

"We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said softly.

"Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs."

"What kind of miracle does your brother need?" asked the pharmacist's brother.

"I don't know," Tess replied with tears in her eyes. "I just know he is really sick and needs an operation. But my Dad can't pay for it. I want to use my money — one dollar and eleven cents to buy a miracle."

"Well, what a coincidence (巧合)!" smiled the man, "one dollar and eleven cents — the exact price of a miracle for your little brother."

He took the money and said, "Take me where you live. I want to see your brother. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need."
