My "perfect holiday"

Rules for a Healthy Life

Thanks to better health care, most people are living healthier lives. It is even believed that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthdays. Here are some rules for a healthy life.

◆ Get off the sofa!

Sure, it is comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV. But doctors say you should get off the sofa. To keep fit, you have to do sports every day.

◆ Eat healthy food!

It is important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health.

◆ Rest while you can!

When we're babies, we sleep for much of the night. Teenagers do not need as much sleep as babies, but it is important for you to get about eight hours' sleep a night. At weekends, you have got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest too.

◆ Do not worry, be happy!

Many people think that happiness is important for our health. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the difficulties of school, or friendship. If you are worried about something, talk to your parents or your teachers.

Berlinda Black is thirteen years old, and he comes from a small village in South Australia. He has two sisters — Jennifer is eleven and Lisa is seven. They are all studying at the School of the Air.

The School of the Air is a school for children who are in a place which does not have a local school. So they have "air" lessons over the radio or on the computer. Their teachers are in Port Augusta, a city which is about 160 kilometers away.

In the morning, they go to the classroom at 8:45. It is really just a small building. When they get there, they turn on the radio or computer and listen to what they should do. From then until twelve, they just do their usual lessons. In the afternoon, their mum makes them do more housework around the house.

They send their exercise "books" to their teachers by email on Friday night. On Monday and Tuesday, their teachers mark them, and then send them back. They get them on Wednesday.

The Internet and the telephone help them get in touch with their teachers quickly and easily. They talk to their teachers once a week for about ten minutes. The teachers tell them if they are making progress.

Next year he will start at a new school in Port Augusta. He will spend the weekdays there and come home at weekends. He thinks it will be good to be with teenagers of his age, but he will miss his family. He hopes he will be happy there.

From red apples to green watermelons, fruits come in many different colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. Why do different kinds of fruits have so many colors?

The colors of fruits actually come from their different pigments (色素), which depend on the temperature. To find out how temperature influences fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors. They found that red fruits usually grow in cooler places and blue fruits mostly grow in warmer places. And instead of just growing in one place, fruits grow in many places around the world. The scientists also found that the closer the fruits are to the equator (赤道), the darker their colors will be.

Animals have also had an influence on the development of fruit colors. Animals eat fruits and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruits spread and grow in different places. So, in order to draw animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.

However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruits need to develop colors that could be seen by animals. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. So usually, there are more red fruits in areas where birds live.

What are insects like in your eyes? Have you ever noticed them? Insects are very interesting animals. They may be small, but they are smart and hard-working. Scientists have studied different kinds of insects very closely. According to their studies, even the smallest insects have tools to help do their work.

Have you ever seen a little fly called a sawfly? It gets such a name because it has a saw (锯子). The saw is used on plants to create a safe space for its eggs. After laying its eggs, the sawfly makes some glue. The glue fixes the eggs to the place where they are laid.

There is a kind of bees with their own natural tools, too. The bees live in wood. Like people who make things out of wood, the bees use special tools to dig nests (巢) out of wood. They dig and clean out the nest to make it ready to use. When all is ready, they cut out pieces of leaves in the shape of a nest. They then join the pieces together and put them into the nest.

Ants are also famous for their clever use of natural tools. For example, they drop pieces of leaves into water so that they take in the water. Then the ants carry them back to their nests.

There are more insects than any other living things in the world. Every insect is special. The more you notice them, the more they will surprise you.

Humanoid robots can finish all kinds of daily housework.   When people go out for work or travel, they can watch the house and keep home safe all the time.

For example, we may all think, "I'll just have a little fun." At first, we turn on the computer and start a game, but soon the monster comes. Then it starts to eat away our time, minute by minute. Finally, we just sit there and look at the screen without noticing it at all.

We often get lost in the monster's world like this. We become couch potatoes (电视迷) with sore necks and dry eyes. We miss sweet moments with loved ones. We are deaf to the real world.

Just remember, too much fun also makes Jack a dull boy! The time-eating monster will always be there. But we can keep it away by having fun in a proper way.
