There are thousands of tulou across Fujian, with Yongding being home to 1,768 of them. They were built by the Hakka people, a group who moved from China's central plains to the mountains in the south to avoid wars centuries ago.

Have you ever dreamed of spending a day living in a tulou? Now, that dream can come true. Shenheng Lou, a tulou in Yongding with nearly four centuries of history, has now become a hotel. It has been turned from an old building into a fine hotel with lots of money put into it. Last year, around 5,000 guests stayed in the hotel.

Lin Hui, the manager, understands the building and its history. She was born in 1986 inside the walls of another tulou in Yongding. According to Lin, the building will become weak if it is no longer in use. Every space in a tulou is connected, so if one room becomes weak, the nearby rooms can also fall.

The rebuilding fixed the old problems and also added important things like toilets. Steel was added to make the mostly wooden building stronger.

In Fujian, 46 tulou were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2018 because of their historical value, including 23 tulou in Yongding. Lin Shangkang, a 52-year-old local man, lives in another World Heritage site, Zhencheng Lou. He works as a tour guide to his home." I never get tired of telling visitors about the history of this place; I enjoy it," Lin said. His great-grandfather and his brothers built the building a century ago. Today, the tulou is still home to 18 families. Together, there are about 80 people living there.

Zeng Jieshan, a 16-year-old high school student from Shenzhen, Guangdong, traveled four hours by train to experience the tulou up close." I used to think ancient buildings were mostly temples or royal palaces, like the Forbidden City," Zeng said." But here in the tulou, people still live happily."

Life has a way of shaping us. Life can make you doubt or question your purpose (目标). These are thoughts that I have had in my head for many years. Poetry prepares me for my purpose. My purpose is poetry.

In my journey toward purpose, poetry is my safety net because it releases me from pain. I started writing at the age of 5. By 13, I had written quite a lot of poems. Poetry was my escape from bullying (霸凌). I experienced from some people around me. They bullied me because of the way I looked. This gave me low self-esteem (自尊). Poetry was my way to be seen, be heard and be known.

For each important moment in my life, I write poetry. In hard times, I write poetry. I connect with poetry on a deep level. However, writing poetry can't support me. So I turned to teaching instead.

While living in China, I worked as an English teacher. I help teach two classes. The two Chinese teachers I work with gave me feedback on how to teach the students English. They also decided what I needed to do in the classroom. With challenging situations like this, I continue writing poetry. I write down my feelings. I reflect. I embrace (欣然接受) a new me. I learn to think positively. My relationship with poetry has grown over time. Poetry stays in the depths of my soul.

Nothing is stopping you. The only person standing in your way is you. You have the power. Keep going. Keep believing. Remember that your hard work is not in vain. Go for it! Your purpose is waiting for you!

Everyone may get angry. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when your friend breaks your favourite thing, you may get really angry.

 For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something.

In fact, it's normal for you to get angry.  When you keep it inside, you sometimes may get some health problems. So you need to try to let it out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself. You can talk about it with other people. It's really helpful to talk about the things that make you angry with other people, like your parents, teachers, etc.  Remember that what you do when you're angry can make everything better or worse. So you should think carefully before you take action.  Try your best to control your anger!

One day, Karthik's parents were busy with their work. It was raining1 , and Karthik was alone at home. The sound of thunder (雷) was 2 loud that it felt like the gods were fighting in the sky. This scared him a little, so he took his favorite novel, Harry Potter,3 the bookshelf.

Again, there was a terrible sound of thunder. He tried to focus on the novel, but the sudden sound of the doorbell interrupted (打扰) him. It couldn't be his parents. He looked at the 4 - it was only ten minutes past three. Usually, they didn't get home 5 six in the afternoon. The doorbell sounded again."Who is there?" he shouted. There was no 6 . The doorbell sounded again. He remembered his parents telling him not to open the door 7 checking who it is.

"Should I answer the bell or not?" thought Karthik. He decided to first prepare himself for a(an)8 situation. He went into a room and came out with a baseball bat, which he hid behind the door in case he needed it. But still, he needed to make sure who was at the door before he opened it. He shouted once again,"Who is at the door?" There was still no reply. No sound of footsteps, either. He held the baseball bat in one hand and was 9 to open the door with the other. Suddenly, there was a loud cry." Karthik! Karthik! Why don't you open the door?"

"There is no doubt about it, it is Dad," Karthik shouted and rushed forward to open the door.

"Why are you holding a baseball bat?" asked Karthik's father. For a moment, the boy seemed at a loss for words (语塞). Then his father gave him a big 10 , perhaps understanding Karthik's predicament (窘境).

Tom was a successful businessman. He spent most of his time making money. Recently, Tom found that his son, Max, was spending more and more time  his phone and losing interest in any other  (thing). He thought it was time for  (make) a change.

So one day, Tom decided to take Max on a trip, not to an expensive restaurant or an amusement park (游乐园). Instead, he chose the countryside. When they arrived at the village, everything felt  (difference). The houses were simple, and there  (be) few shopping malls or cars. But to Tom's surprise, Max had no problem fitting in. He quickly made friends with the local children. They played games and laughed together. He even talked with an old lady who kindly gave him some homemade snacks.

Tom smiled and asked, "But people here don't have much money, do they?" Max shook his head and said, "No, Dad. They may not be rich in money, but they're rich in  (happy)." Hearing this, Tom felt very proud of his son.

Rainforests are called the lungs (肺) of the world. Because we breathe air with our lungs, and there are much more trees producing fresh air in rainforests.

Rainforests can be divided into four layers (层次). The forest floor is the ground level. It is the darkest because there is little sunlight. When dead leaves and animals are on the ground, they are broken down into organic matter (有机物) by the heat and the many small insects. The second layer starts from the ground to about 20 metres.这些树和植物比草高一点儿. It is still quite dark at this level, so the trees grow slowly. Some of these trees grow tall and pointed at the top to reach the sunlight. Other plants, like vines, cling onto the trees and get a free ride towards the sunlight.

The third layer is made up of the limbs (主干) and leaves of trees. This is a very thick layer: 20 to 50m off the ground. Insects, birds, reptiles, and monkeys live in this layer. This layer of leaves and branches catch the sunlight and also most of the rain.

The top layer is called the emergent layer (树冠层). The top of the tallest trees can stretch more than 50 m high. These trees are old and big but there are not too many of them. These trees have huge leafy heads that stretch wide because they have more room to grow.
