In the past, most Chinese people rode a bicycle or walked for short trips. China's first bicycles appeared in the late 19th century, but they became popular much later. As time went by, buses and trains became common for longer trips. These changes allowed people to visit family in other cities more easily.
Today, China's high-speed trains are some of the quickest in the world. For example, traveling from Beijing to Shanghai now takes less than five hours, while it took ten hours in the past. The first high-speed train in China started running in 2008. By 2024, China had built about 48,000 kilometers of high-speed train lines, connecting (连接) nearly all big cities in China. This helps workers find jobs in different places.
In cities, subways help people move around quickly. Thanks to these developments, more cities have built their own subways. China's first subway opened in Beijing in 1981, and by 2024 more than 40 cities had built subways. Beijing's subways are the longest in the world, covering more than 800 kilometers.
In the countryside, new roads reach many villages. Farmers can now send their agricultural produce (农产品) to markets much faster. In mountain areas, workers have built roads through mountains and bridges over rivers.
All these changes, from bicycles to high-speed trains, make traveling easier and help our country grow stronger.
