The serious flood（洪水）has swept China's central Henan Province and Shanxi Province. More than hundreds of thousands of people have been influenced. So when in the face of a flash flood, what should we do to keep safe?

In July, China introduced the "double reduction（双减）" policy. It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden（负担）on primary and junior high school students. The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework. After-school training institutions（校外培训机构）are not allowed to offer extra education courses or advanced（超前的）teaching on weekends, holidays or during winter and summer vacations. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy?

"Our homework is clearly less than before," said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. "We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook." 

According to Shen, students have enough time to process new knowledge now. "Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life." said Shen. "For example, we went to research earthworms（蚯蚓）in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books."

For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about "double reduction" is the increased time in after-school activities. "We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called "leadership development" where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond schoolwork," said Zhang.

Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it's not necessarily a good thing. "Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points," Zhang said.

Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline（自律）becomes the key. "Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students," he said.

Do you know mukbang（吃播）? It is about the eating shows in front of the camera on the Internet. In the shows, mukbangers eat food and sometimes talk to people who watch their videos.

The eating shows started in South Korea in around 2010 and then became popular all over the world. Why did mukbang start in this country? Actually, South Korea has the culture of eating together, but eating on one's own is quite common in the country. Watching mukbang can be a way to have someone to cat with. People can connect with（联系）others even though they are at home alone.

However, mukbang has its dark sides. The way mukbangers eat food in some shows isn't healthy. These bad eating habits can bring serious health problems. Worse still, some mukbangers prepare a lot of food but throw away much food without others knowing during the show or after the show. These mukbangers waste（浪费）a lot of food.

Now, many people criticize such shows. Food waste is a serious problem around the world, and there are lots of people who still don't have enough food to eat. Our country does a lot of things to solve the problem and asks short-video platforms（平台）, such as TikTok and Kuaishou, to take actions.

Did you hear about the Two-Children Policy? Someone says that a single child may be a lonely child. There are no other children in the family to talk or play with and an only child is not able to get along well with children of his age. That's why some parents regretted deciding to have only one child.

However, it is quite difficult for parents to decide to have a second child. For some single-child parents, especially who are busy working every day, they don't have enough time to share with more children. For some people, money is the most difficult thing for them. They have to pay for feeding, clothing, schooling and so on. That will be a lot of money. For other people, they are worried that they are not young enough to have one more child.

This may be why more and more parents in many parts of the world choose to have only one child. In the US, for example, more than 14% of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child. The situation is the same in the UK. In Japan, the average number of children born in each family went down to 1.38 by 2019. The government of Japan advises people to get married early, hoping to see an increase in the number of young people starting families. This will help with the nation's birth rate.
