Without language, crying is a baby's best shot at getting the help they need from their caregivers. But not every cry is the same. Cries that come from serious pain are much more disordered than the cries of low-level discomfort. Scientists call these "nonlinear phenomena" or NLPs.

Caregivers can usually differentiate between cries of ordinary discomfort and those NLPs, but it's unclear exactly how our bodies arrive at this higher-order conclusion. A team led by Dr. Laurent Moreau from Jean Monnet University wanted to know how these sounds affect adults' nervous systems and the bodily effects they cause.

They tested the reactions of 41 participants(21 men, 20 women, aged 35 years old on average)to the sounds of babies crying. These adults listened to a selection of 23 audio (音频) tracks, recorded from 16 different babies while they were either experiencing the discomfort of a bath, or the pain of a vaccination shot (接种疫苗) at the doctor. As the participants listened, a heat camera tracked changes to their face temperature. An increase in heat from this part of the body is a response from the nervous system, which manages uncontrollable bodily functions such as heart rate and breathing.

The results showed that a cry with a higher level of NLP caused a stronger redness response from listeners' faces, suggesting that these messy sounds are much more effective at getting the attention of adults, on a bodily level, than cries with little or no NLP.

"While our results sound interesting and new, this study remains rather basic and raises a number of questions about the methods used in the experiment." Dr. Moreau notes.

After studying five key areas where AI can be especially effective, the study shows that in the areas responsible for nearly half of global emissions (排放), AI applications could help to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But there are trade-offs. According to the study, a lot of harms have appeared: training large models uses a lot of electricity and water; setting them widely increases energy needs; and carrying necessary hardware adds environmental footprint. The study report warns these costs might reduce benefits unless actively managed.

While AI for environmental protection is a promising direction, its success depends on governance and values. To achieve that goal, several practices are necessary: setting environmental impact assessment (评价); building energy-efficient architectures; using renewable energy; ensuring that communities likely to be affected have a voice; and widening social frameworks to contain more-than-human concerns. Furthermore, the social impact must be taken seriously. Different from the previous discovery, the report argues that AI has so far overlooked the impact on ecosystems, animals, plants and climate. It suggests using more reasonable methods to ensure a balance between harms and benefits, wise decision-making, and the effect of non-human factors in management.

In conclusion, AI has the potential to be valuable for protecting the environment — but only if we consider responsible designs and regulations that go beyond human-only concerns. If we do, AI can strengthen human efforts, not weaken them.
