Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, has a new rule for both parents and children. It asks parents to make sure their children spend at least two hours a week doing housework at home. It is meant to help children understand the importance of labor (劳动) work and learn useful labor skills.

The rule also asks schools to offer lessons about labor education, places for teaching labor skills, experienced teachers and tools (工具). It also says that there should be a special week for labor education, and that all schools in Changzhou should have special money for these lessons.

There is a big discussion about the new rule. Some people think it's a good idea, but others don't think so.

"I just have a few hours to relax every weekend, and I have little time to do housework," Wang Xing, a middle school student in Changzhou said. "I hardly have any classmates who do housework."

Xiong Bingqi, an expert (专家), said, "To make sure the new rule works well, parents' participation (参与) is very important." He advised that parents help their children learn about labor work and have their children do housework for two hours each week. He also said that parents can work with their children and make housework part of family time. This way, children may enjoy it more and learn faster.

"Some parents care too much about grades and forget to teach their children important life skills. That's why we believe it's necessary to help children get labor skills and learn the importance of labor work," Xiong said. "Doing housework can make students smarter and healthier. Just being good at school isn't enough to be successful if students don't have other important skills." In the future, students with strong life skills may find it easier to take care of themselves and face real-life problems.

"Hi! How are you?" The woman smiled as she took the seat next to me on the plane. She had to lower herself slowly, trying hard to push her fat body into the seat, filling all free space.

I didn't answer and moved a little towards the window. She said her greeting again in a friendly voice. 

"Hi!" I answered.

"My name is Laura. I'm from Britain. How about you?" she said excitedly.

"Malaysia." I answered.

Laura started a conversation with me, taking no notice of my unfriendly reactions. Her voice was warm and loving. She was thoughtful. When we were served drinks and meals, she made sure that I had space to move in my seat. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable with my elephant size!" she said with great sincerity.

Laura was interesting. During our conversation, Laura tried to make every person happy on the plane, including the stewardess (空姐), who walked away laughing at her jokes.

I asked Laura, "Have you ever thought about losing some weight? You aren't worried about the problems that come with being too fat?"

"Not at all, because I eat healthily and walk regularly." she said. "This may not be scientific, but I believe in my heart that the people who get ill are the ones who worry all the time. I'm this size because I was born to be big! I am what I am."

She drank her wine. "Besides, God gives me so much happiness that I need a bigger body to hold (容纳) all of it! If I lose weight, I'll lose my happiness."

Surprised by her unusual reason, I smiled. I suddenly understood that Laura was the most beautiful woman I had ever met in my life.

When Oxford University Press (出版社) chose "rizz" as its 2023 Word of the Year, many people asked, "Rizz? Is there such a word?" At the same time, many young English speakers laughed out loud "Jeepers, haven't you ever heard of rizz?" 

Rizz means the ability to attract a person. Are you good at making friends? Do your classmates often laugh loudly at your jokes? Then you probably have rizz. As in "to rizz up someone", it means to attract someone. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang (俚语) and became popular after the Spider-Man actor Tom Holland said he had "no rizz."

    ★  "Jeepers" is another. People use it to express shock. And the word "tea" is no longer just a "drink". It also means "gossip (闲聊)." Similarly, here in China, words like "xianyanbao" have a new meaning. Teens are also saying "dazi" (pal or friend) and "qimengle" (What?).

These changes show that both English and Chinese are alive. A healthy language, researchers say, should always see new words being created, words being borrowed from other languages and old words taking on new meanings. The changes also show that young people have more influences on society.

When we look back on 2023, one thing stands out: artificial intelligence (AI).

Computers have become cleverer than ever. Some AI systems (系统) have "rizzed up" many users with their ability to write long articles, create poems and draw pictures. But they can only use language. Can ChatGPT coin a slang word and make it popular? Can it give a word new meanings? Can it change how we humans speak and write?

You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But while you try to create another slang word, remember to be polite. Also, don't use slang in your compositions so that it won't "rizz up" your teachers!

Most students do not enjoy doing housework. Some of them think that cleaning the bathroom or cooking dinner for the family is boring. However, housework is not as boring as they think.  

Learn to do small things.

You should learn to do small things.  Part of growing up is to learn to take care of yourself. Doing some things around the house shows that you are becoming responsible (有责任心的).

Divide housework among the family.

In fact, it's too tiring for one person to do all the housework alone.  All the family members will do the housework together. Dividing housework among all the family members will make everyone's job much easier.

Make it fun.

 It can be very fun if you put your love into it. You can play some beautiful music while you are cooking, and then you won't feel bored. If you learn how to cook your favourite food, you will also get a feeling of satisfaction.

Hot and Cool

At last, I arrived in Chengdu. My friend Haoyu took me to a 1 right from the airport at the first time, I just couldn't 2 to try Sichuan hot pot! I learned about it from Haoyu before.

3 the first taste made my mouth burn! The food was much 4 than I expected. I tooka deep breath and drank a whole glass of iced lemon tea. Haoyu 5 my situation and he said, "Do you want something less hot?"

My classmates and I  to visit the city museum last Friday. We got  after class and walked together. On the way, we laughed and talked happily. When we walked  the museum gate, we were  to see our teacher waiting for us. She said she wanted to join us. Everyone felt excited about her unexpected  and we started our fun visit soon.

Arishka Laddha comes from India. She has become the youngest Indian girl to climb the Mount Qomolangma Base Camp (珠穆朗玛峰大本营) at the age of six. As we know, the  (高度) of the base camp is about 5,200 meters. Arishka spent fifteen days finishing the expedition (探险) with  (她的) mother Dimple Laddha. What an amazing girl she is!

They  (计划) to start the adventure on April 8, 2023. To overcome (克服) the terrible weather, the little girl wore a lot of warm clothes. "It was so cold there, but I was happy and  (兴奋的)," Arishka said. "Next, I look forward to  (到达) at the peak of Mount Qomolangma." Her mother Dimple  (认为，想) it was not a bad idea.

"Before our journey, some people told me that it was dangerous for such a little girl to climb the base camp. But we decided to go ahead and we set out on the journey although the situation was  (确实地，真实地) dangerous. But surprisingly, it was much  (糟糕的) than we expected.  (然而), my daughter is an active kid. She is powerful because we often do some climbing on weekends. I was sure that she could make it and enjoy the most amazing landscapes. The mountains shone  (明亮地) under the sun. They are the best presents from nature," Dimple said.

Bally Bhamra started travelling the world at the age of 60. After working for 40 years, she decided it was her time to explore. Now in her seventies, she is ready  (visit) new and exciting places and that's what she is doing.

Instead of staying in hotels like most travellers, Bally likes to go somewhere  (interest). She often travels  village to village and stays with friendly local families. She explains, "I go into villages, stay with the local people, understand  (they) way of life, and appreciate (欣赏) that. I do their gardening in the sun, and I also wash their  (dish). I'm not just a traveller; I'm probably more like  member of their family." In Namibia, she once stayed in a place without running water or toilets, but she still felt happy. She even travelled across rivers and  (spend) two days on a wooden boat with no seats!

Bally doesn't feel like  (explore) with others, and people often ask her why. "Travelling alone gives me freedom," she says. Bally believes that if a man can do something, a woman can do it too!

 capable (能力强的) Bally is! , travelling alone is dangerous sometimes. Does she ever feel afraid? "No," she says. "And danger is everywhere, even in my house." Travelling alone makes Bally feel really happy! She wants to show other old women and girls that they should never let age or fear (害怕) stop them from going out into the world.
