Volunteers Needed

Read about what some Chinese people say about their neighbours. 

In 2021, Typhoon In-Fa hit（袭击）my village. It rained for a long time. Our neighbourhood got together and helps some families. A lady had nothing but her clothes. Luckily, she wore my mother's size and the next day she had a small suitcase（手提箱）full of clothes and a pair of shoes.

Two years ago, an old lady Mrs. Huang, needed someone to send her to hospital. So we started a volunteer project in our neighbourhood. Now, "Neighbours. on. wheels" gives a hand to our old neighbours, by taking them to see the doctor.

My neighbour Mary is the best! I am surprised by her generosity. She often gave vegetables to her neighbours. When my daughter was small, she gave her free weekly piano lessons because she knew they are too expensive for us to pay. She looked after my children when school was over.

I remember when my brothers and I were young and lived in a small neighbourhood. I have the sweetest memories（回忆）of my neighbours. We were like a family. Mrs. Wang loved making cookies. On Saturday afternoon she always gave her cookies to children. And on Neighbours' Day, neighbours got together and everybody was happy!

Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on one another. That's why communities have special people ready to help people in need. 

For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches fire, as the Jacksons' place did last week, it might be burned down（烧毁） and people might get hurt or worse. We' re so lucky to have firemen come to save people and put out the fire safely. 

And what about police officers? They protect our families, our homes and important things. The police have helped so many families this past year, especially saving people and pets and protecting our houses and other things after the heavy rain. 

Think about all the other service workers in this community. There are cleaners to collect rubbish and keep our community sanitary. We have road workers and they put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but our cars! And what would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors and nurses in our community hospitals?

Think again about what we eat every day and what we wear every day. We cannot produce（生产）them, but we use them all the time. These tireless workers keep our community running. We get a lot from them and need them in the community. We depend on each other. Let's help each other. Only in this way can we make our community a better place. 

High above the city stood a shining golden statue of the Happy Prince. His body was covered with fine gold, his eyes were made of two bright blue sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword. People passing by always said, "He looks as perfect as the sun!"

One cold night, a little Swallow flew to rest between the Prince's feet. Suddenly, a water drop fell on his head. "How strange! The sky is clear," he thought. Looking up, he saw the Prince's sapphire eyes filled with tears. 

"Why do you cry?" asked the Swallow. 

"When I lived in the palace, I never knew pain. But now I see hungry children and lonely old people. Please take the ruby to the little boy coughing in the poor house," said the Prince. 

The kind Swallow did as asked. He carried the ruby to a dark room where a boy lay ill. The next day, the Prince said, "Now take my sapphire eyes to the writer starving in his attic. " Though sad to see the Prince blind, the Swallow obeyed. 

Days grew colder, but the Swallow stayed. "Give my gold leaves to the poor," the Prince begged. Piece by piece, the Swallow gave away the gold until the statue turned grey. 

One morning, the Swallow whispered, "Goodbye, dear Prince," and fell dead at his feet. At that moment, the Prince's lead heart broke into two pieces. 

When the mayor saw the ugly statue, he ordered it melted. Only the broken heart and the dead bird remained.

Today more and more people would like to do volunteer work. Here are some ideas for you on how to help others through volunteering. 

 When people get older, it becomes harder to do many things, from walking to the store to doing the housework.  As a volunteer, you can do a lot to help the old in your neighbourhood. You could visit them and help them with their housework. 

Help the disabled（残疾人）. Many people with disabilities need help. You could volunteer to read books to the blind or deliver（传递）something for people who can't get around. 

Help poor families. Some families don't have enough money to buy food or clothes for their kids.  To help these people, you can give clothes, food or money to them. You can also raise money for a charity. 

 Sometimes people need more help when the holidays come. Holidays are happy, but for people who are alone or unlucky, they can be a lonely and hard time.  And you can visit the lonely old people and serve food to the homeless.

Susan is a fashion designer. She knows a lot about styles and colours. In her shop near the centre of the city, you can see many beautiful (dress). If you don't know what to wear to a party, she will be happy to give you some ideas. 

David is  engineer, and he works in an office. He uses his computer (do) most of his work. He designs a lot of interesting educational（有教育意义的）DVDs to help the students with (they) homework. Remember to call him,  you want to have fun studying. 

We are (luck) to live in a neighbourhood like that. People here are like a big family. 

Uncle Hobo is a traffic policeman. Now he's working on Main Street. An old man comes to him. He says, "Excuse me. I want to go to the supermarket. Can you tell me the way there?" Uncle Hobo says, "Yes, of course. Walk along Main Street, go past the restaurant, the baker's and the bank, and turn right into Station Street. Go down the street and then you can see a station at the end of the street. Your destination（目的地）, the supermarket, is opposite（在······对面）it. It's far from here. You can take a bus there. " The old man says, "Thank you, sir. Is there a tea room near here?" Uncle Hobo thinks for a while and says, "Yes. It's opposite the bank. " The old man thanks him and then leaves. Several minutes later, the old man comes to Uncle Hobo again. He gives a cup of tea to him and says, "Thank you, young man. "
