Historical records show that there actually wasn't any fall. There wasn't actually spring either. The first season was winter. The word "summer" came next. For a long time, years were only divided into two seasons. "Spring" was introduced much later. It wasn't until the 1600s that "spring", coming from the phrase "spring of the leaf", became the accepted name for the season.
